How To Apply Fake Tuscan Paint To The Outside?

To create a Tuscan-style exterior paint job, pick a warm-toned Tuscan-style color slightly darker than your base coat. Mix the glaze and paint together using a paint stick and mist a small section of the wall with water. This DIY Tuscan Faux Fresco Painting Technique can add Tuscan elegance to both outdoor and indoor spaces.

Achieving a Tuscan faux finish is a two-step process: first laying down a base coat and then adding an “aged” look with a faux painting technique. When picking paint colors for a Tuscan-style color scheme, consider the rich hues inspired by the Italian countryside. Dulux partners have put together some great DIY videos to help you get the hang of doing the job yourself.

A Tuscan-style faux finish involves two main steps: putting down a base coat and then adding a faux layer that creates a rustic or aged look. Color-washing, rag rolling, and dry-brushing are techniques that give your walls a Tuscan finish when applied over rough plaster to heavily textured surfaces.

To update a Tuscan brown home, remove old decor, paint walls and ceilings, and update your lighting fixtures. Masonry products can be tinted to any color you like, but Benjamin Moore color family is recommended.

In summary, creating a Tuscan-style exterior paint job is a fun and easy project to add a rustic Italian flair to your home. By following these steps, you can achieve a Tuscan-style texture on your walls and create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere.

What kind of paint do you use for faux painting?

Choose two complementary paint colors, preferably in the same color family, and apply them to the walls using a base coat in a satin sheen and a second coat in a satin, eggshell, or semi-gloss. The lighter color is typically the best choice for the base coat.

Prep the walls as you would for a standard paint job, using painter’s tape to protect molding and ceiling areas. Paint the base coat and allow it to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. Mix your second color of acrylic or latex paint with glaze, using 4 parts glaze to 1 part paint. Apply the mixture with a brush, roller, sponge, or cloth, blending and feathering as you go.

Sponge on topcoats using a natural sea sponge for best results, adjusting the translucency for each layer by mixing the paint with increasing amounts of glaze. Dab the sponge into the paint/glaze mixture and lightly press it onto the wall, varying the pressure slightly to create varying degrees of depth. Twist and turn your hand to create the sponge pattern, overlapping the sponge impressions to create a pleasing visual effect.

Rag rolling is similar to sponging but uses a different method—a twisted rag—to apply the paint to the surface. Choose acrylic or latex paint in two colors—one for the base coat and one for the second coat, which can be mixed with glaze for more translucency. Contrasting colors provide the most drama for this technique.

Prep the walls as described in Step 2 of Color Washing, paint the base coat, and allow it to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. Wear gloves, dunk a dry painter’s rag into the paint/glaze mixture, twist it to create a series of overlapping folds, roll it down the wall, and use portions of the rag to continue the pattern into the corners and abutting with the ceiling lines and baseboard.

Can you paint exterior with interior paint?

Durability is a major concern when comparing interior and exterior paint. Interior paint is not suitable for outdoor use due to lack of chemical additives or composure. It is thinner and requires multiple coats for the same coverage, which may not result in a smoother finish. Additionally, it takes longer for interior paint to dry in outdoor conditions, resulting in poorer paint job. Hybrid paints, which can be used both indoors and outdoors, are not as effective as traditional paints and lack necessary ingredients and additives. They lack mildew, moisture, or crack protection and are less likely to withstand outdoor elements.

How to paint tuscan style?

Tuscan decor style involves using fresh brush strokes and chalky water-based paint for an authentic wall finish. The technique involves applying paint free-hand, without sharp lines or cuts. To begin, measure one meter up from the floor and mark the wall at intervals. Draw a line along the wall, dividing it into two parts: the lower part below the one-meter mark and the upper part above it. Place masking tape on the lower side of the line, dilute the paint, apply it to the lower wall, and let it dry completely.

Renew the tape and paint the top part of the wall using the second diluted paint. Peel off the tape and paint a free-hand terracotta stripe across the wall. The bright colors give a feeling of zest and energy, and choosing plants that add freshness and liveliness to the space will amplify the Tuscany look.

What paint finish is best choice when applying a faux surface effect?

Facial finishes like Venetian plaster or metallic paint can add a fancy touch to walls without cost. Textured wallpapers or paints can add depth and hide wall marks, while dark colors require careful sheen consideration. When choosing the right paint sheen, consider the room’s function and foot traffic to strike a balance between practicality and aesthetic appeal. Consider the room’s purpose and traffic, such as having kids or pets running around, and choose a high-gloss paint for hallways and kitchens that can withstand cleaning.

What can I add to interior paint to make it exterior?

Exterior paint is designed for outdoor environments to handle extreme temperatures and be flexible enough to withstand significant temperature changes. Its binding resins allow coverage to expand and contract without peeling or chipping, while additives help resist staining, mildew, and fading. Interior paint can be transformed into a durable exterior paint by combining it with an Outdoor Additive by The Real Milk Paint Co. Outdoor paint also has a formulation that promotes better coverage on rougher surfaces, but it contains more VOCs than interior paints, making it suitable only in highly ventilated areas.

Outdoor paint comes in flat, gloss, or semi-gloss enamels, making it limited in color choices. Painting techniques and surfaces also differ, with some jobs requiring scraping away old paint before application.

Do you need glaze for faux painting?

How do you modernize a Tuscan style home?

To update Tuscan style in a Rancho Santa Fe Tuscan-style home, consider refinishing dark ceiling beams, baseboards, door frames, and moldings in a lighter shade, painting walls white, hanging contemporary art, incorporating modern furniture, removing heavy wood beams on fireplaces, installing modern lighting, and replacing cabinet doors with sleek Euro-style doors. Randy Spiegel of Doranco Corp. toned down the ceiling beams by giving them a warm brown-gray hue, and painted the walls white to brighten the interiors. This simple yet effective update will create a perfect blend of Old World and contemporary design.

How do you faux paint with metallic paint?

To create a two-tone smush, mix two paints, one latex and the other metallic. Dip a brush into the latex paint and apply it in a small area. Then, dip the brush into the metallic paint and stipple it onto the latex wall base using a different brush position. Work the sides and corner edges of the brush using a fan configuration. Finish with more metallic paint to achieve the desired look. Metallic paints can be applied using various faux finishing techniques, such as mixing with glaze or applying directly to the wall. Regardless of the method, metallic finishes add instant sophistication to a dreary interior.

What happens if I accidentally use interior paint outside?

Interior paint used on an exterior surface can cause aesthetic flaws due to its inability to withstand exterior elements, leading to cracking, blistering, bubbles, and peeling. It is not recommended to use interior paint on an exterior surface as it may not last long. Repairing this damage requires sanding the paint off the substrate, sealing with an outdoor primer, and repainting the entire area with the appropriate outdoor wall paint.

This can be time-consuming and costly. If an accident occurs and indoor paint is used outdoors due to a wrong label, applying 1 or 2 coats of outdoor paint immediately after drying can save the paint.

  • Hi, thanks for the article. After reading some comments, I’m still confused about thr glaze. You seem to say it is transparent, but should also have a color a few shades darker than the base color. I guess I’m not apprehending something. If I paint the wall with a plain desired color and apply a transparent glaze as you explained, it will get naturally 3 shades darker in the applied areas? Did I get this right? Thanks again for the work!
