The process of installing a lockset involves several steps, including attaching the strike plate, installing the latch, securing the latch, installing new knobs or levers, and testing the lockset. Two important variables when installing a lockset are the height of the knob above the finish floor and the backset, which is the distance from the center of the knob to the near edge of the door. Most knobs are positioned a comfortable 36 or 38 inches above the floor.
To change a lockset, first measure the size of your doorknob. Front and back door locksets are often larger than interior locksets, and commercial locksets may be larger. To change a door lock with a deadbolt, purchase a new lockset and understand the structure of the past lockset and space it took in the old door.
The process is simple with the right tools and guidance. In this guide, Tom Silva, an Old House general contractor, shows how to install a door lock for both interior and exterior doors. To increase home security and gain peace of mind, follow these steps:
- Remove the old doorknob using a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the old latch mechanism to the edge of the door.
- Remove the screws in the faceplate of the doorknob if they’re visible. Have a locksmith come to your house (expensive) and unscrew the screws holding the knobset together.
- Measure for the replacement lock, match the key, remove the door knob and replace latch, remove old deadbolt, and install new lock and deadbolt.
