In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can customize their homes by entering decorating mode by pressing the “A” button on the home’s door and then pressing the “X” button to enter the interior design mode. This allows players to customize exterior siding, roof, shape, and more. The Pro Decorating License tool in ACNH 2.0 Update allows players to create accent walls and ceiling fixtures for more customization options.
To start decorating mode, press the bottom button or bottom arrow on the D-Pad in the room where the accent wall is located. Press the Plus Button on your D-Pad to enter the interior design mode. To use storage and decorating mode, hold down the Down Button while inside your house.
In New Horizons, players can go into a designer UI by pressing +Control Pad Down.svg anytime while designing their own house. Once they have the furniture, return to their house and enter decorating mode by pressing the + button twice to reach the ceiling.
To access the wallpaper, either in pockets or in Storage, press the Down button on the D-Pad when you’re in the house. The wallpaper is on the touch screen (lower screen) and only shows when you’re inside your house. Press the down button on the left Joy-Con to enter design mode, and press the right button to open up storage and view the house.
In summary, players can customize their homes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons by entering decorating mode, using storage and decorating modes, and utilizing the Pro Decorating License tool.

What I’m annoyed about is that before getting terraforming we need to move a certain amount of villagers in, but I want to move cliffs and clear land so I can make streets and put homes where I want. So basically once I get terraforming I’m going to have to move a lot of houses, which will cost ALOT of bells. UPDATE: ok so all my houses have been successfully moved and my island is looking pretty cute now. It did take quite a few bells and a lot of planning but it was so worth it in the end!
I get why people are confused, but I like how they are going the traditional way. In the old games, you didn’t have a lot of things so the fun part was figuring out all the special stuff on your own! They never used to give you much info so in the surface it seemed a boring game but if you explored enough you’d find all these easter eggs and especial features!!
This was extremely helpful. I’m not being sarcastic, you made everything clear. I saw other people’s islands have paths and I was wondering “How do you get paths?” I watched a vid from a guy who took forever to get to the point, but when I clicked on your article, you explained everything nice and clear. Thank you again!
i thought getting a 3 star island was relatively easy…i didn’t even realize mine was 3 stars until tom nook was like we are ready for the concert, as soon as i got to the concert thing, i had already had a nice enough island. i didn’t even plant a lot of flowers, it was just the flowers that my island had to begin with, i recommend just placing fences, having all ten villagers and building one stairway, because that’s the only thing that i think made my island three stars, also get rid of all the weeds. i don’t even have decorations or anything really around town,so for the people who are planting flowers, try building fences or adding a stairway somewhere.
I can’t unlock terraforming since my sister is the mayor, and she doesn’t even play it. I’m just a resident on the island and I’ve already gotten a big house and a bunch of items that I don’t want to lose if I can just use my sister’s account. TvT I wish I can just switch my account to become the mayor. n
This doesn’t really have to do with the article but I don’t understand why bridges and inclines are so expensive. And why are we only able to craft one bridge so easily at the start and then have to pay so much for another one?? Its annoying. I think we should be able to just craft different types of bridges and inclines.
THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME! ❤️💙. people just say on their articles “just decorate you island and that’s all.” or some people lie and say “tom nook will give it to you in the next update or he will just give it to you after a week.” BUT YOU ACTUALLY EXPLAINED INTO MORE DETAIL TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE DOES IT CORRECTLY BY THE STEPS! 💜 you a lifesaver 💟💟💟(sorry for the long text her😅)
omg, so like, i was looking up how to get that tool u know, and u started talking about how Isabelle and Tom Nook will start talking about it. Well after i saw that i went on animal crossing into the plaza and the first thing they said was about K.K. and i’m like, wow PERFECT timing 🙂 that was my story bye
I wish moving your house wasn’t so expensive. Imagine not knowing the right and wrongs about where to place things at first, then later learning and having to spend so much time to get the money, then still having to wait a whole day for it to move. I’m glad terraforming is free, but moving buildings that you didn’t know were so expensive to move move is so unfair. For some people it takes awhile to get enough bells to even move one building, let alone more. Now our islands look wack
Hi! Would you happen to know if secondary players automatically unlock terraforming as well? Or do they have to go through the same motions as the main account player? I see the permits that I have to purchase on the main account (Nook Miles station), but they don’t appear for the secondary account..
Sorry if I’m being stupid, but I just repayed the 5000 miles today, can I ask how you get to things like the pole, road paving, building bridges, the town hall and the shop please? Also, this is my sister’s game so I am on a second file, does that mean I have access to everything, like can I commission a bridge to be built, or does my lil sis have to issue that to be done and then I help pay for it?
So I’m stuck being unable to farm the stones on Mystery Islands for Iron Nuggets because they’re on a cliff? Who the hell designed this?! EDIT: So I had no idea when I wrote this that the ladder was a thing, but still, it doesn’t change the fact that progressing in the first few days is more tedious prior to obtaining it.
I’m playing with my sis on my switch so she doesn’t have her own island, lives in mine, I have a question about this if anyone know the answer: Can she gain the ability to terraform as well? I would like her to have the option, but we haven’t gone that far in the game yet, so she can customize half the island to her liking…
Nice! I just got my rating high enough for KK slider to be on the way when I watched this, and I have over 100k Nook miles so I am good to go! Just have to wait because for the moment I refuse to time travel (But I may eventually give in and do it to trigger my birthday one day because I was honest and set it to leap year)
My brother forgot to save my island and then played om his profile ajd here we are… He’s the main resident, he doesnt play anymore, and im here stuck doing nothing. Can i at least get this app? I cant do ANYTHING and my bells, EVERHTHING is way more advanced for me. I hate having to do everything on his account with barely anything…
I just got this game for my SO and myself about three weeks ago. One complaint is nooks shop is always closed when I get home (until update), but idk how people with jobs have been putting up with this for over a year. Anyways my island is currently building 3 new inhabitants and I cant wait to grind for 12k miles to start scaping.
I know this was made 5 months ago but here’s a short way on how to do it: First, make your island more noticeable (get it three starts+) Second, Isabelle will give you tips on how to get the island even more noticeable, follow her advice, and then wait until K.K. comes to your island Once K.K. comes to your island and has a concert, Tom Nook will allow you to have the bUiLdInG-ThInG permit.
Can all players unlock this feature? Or is it reserved for the Island representative (player 1)? I’ve been having a really hard time figuring this out. Would you consider going through the issues of sharing an island on the same game/switch? Most of the complaints are about player 1/resident rep having more privileges and an overall better game experience, but it’s not certain if this is a first week only thing or if it’s for the long haul, and the game is so recent that most people who got the game after it launched can’t comment on it yet.
