Factors to consider include the type of renovation, the size of the home, and the property’s value. Structural renovations involve more intensive changes to the structure, such as moving walls, adding a new roof, or updating plumbing and wiring. In order to ascertain an appropriate remodeling budget, it is essential to consider the overall value of the home in question. It is then prudent to limit spending to a maximum of 10 to 15 percent of the property’s worth on a single room. It is possible that expenditures in excess of the recommended limits may not yield proportional increases in the value of the renovation. For example, if the value of the property in question is $100, 000, the maximum expenditure that can be incurred on a kitchen or bathroom renovation is $15, 000. • We charge for estimates as well, the days of free estimates went out with the $1 a gallon gas prices. If they really want the work they will pay for the estimate. As soon as we started doing this we lost 1 out of 5 estimate calls but landed more of the calls we were taking. It worked out better for us.

  • Excellent advice… I’ve been in business for 22 years and free estimates was the biggest time and money loss that we’ve ever experienced. Tire kickers, and folks just wanting ideas on their projects depleted our time immensely. We started charging $200 for an in person estimate, which gives the customer One hour of our time which included travel in that hour. Of course we offered free estimates by phone and email… So if folks wanted to do some homework send us descriptions, pictures, we guaranteed a free estimate back to them within one day… A “verbal”, yet it was via text. This completely changed our business and propelled our earnings immensely. The customers that pay for estimates almost always hired us for the job… it weeded out all tire kickers and information seekers almost immediately. Also, you have to be able to get to the point that you can give an estimate with only 5 to 10 minutes of figuring… You cannot spend hours. at least on projects that are under $15,000 etc. we make our largest profits on jobs under $3000… The handyman type punchlist projects… So that’s why this type of estimation really works for us. The larger the project it seems the less the profit per segment of time. Anyway, it’s awesome to see a lot of handyman/contractors on YouTube now going back to charging for estimates like they did in the 70s. Devaluing our time was never the right answer.

  • I have lost many hours doing free estimates in the past. A couple years ago we started charging for the quote and leaving the estimate for free. In the first phone conversation we try to vet the project to make sure it fits our business model. We then email them a questionnaire about what they would like to have done. This gives us a much better starting place and acts as free advertisement for services we provide that they might now know of. From the response we get we will email an estimated price range and possibly some portfolio pictures with an attached invoice for a quote that is generally 1% of the estimated work. At that point we will schedule a site visit to take measurements and discuss ideas and desires. The project manager takes lots of notes and pictures for reference as he builds the quote. There will generally be more selections along the process but a safe quote for a job takes quite a bit of time and leg work.

  • I have an estimate horror story to enplane why you probably should charge for estimates….sometimes. I had a great client, I’ve done several projects for her in the past and she’s always been reasonable & followed through with hiring me for projects. Well, she wanted me to give her an estimate to remodel her Master & guest bathroom, her hall laundry room, and replace tile in large powder room & closet. Not a problem, I took some measurements & put together an estimate…not bad, it only took me a few hours so I don’t mind considering it was a 30k potential job. Well, after that she said she was fine with the estimate but she wanted to pick out the materials & pay for supplies. I figured this wouldn’t be so bad since I was sure she was going ahead with the estimate so i probably spent 4-5 hours writing up 4 detailed pages of information with what she needed to buy for all of the work….Detailed like model numbers, exact sizes, quantities, and where to buy it. Well, after that she ghosted me and I got screwed on 5-7 hours of my time. I don’t know if she took my list and had her husband do the work, hired someone else, or just changed her mind but in retrospect I wish I had told her I would have to charge her for my time to make a detailed supplies list. My advice is, If the client needs an estimate for a large job, something that has to be scheduled, supplies delivered, and more than a week of work, they need to pay you to work on the estimate since it will take you several hours to put it all together.

  • I too charge for estimates. It is not very often and usually when I get a feeling about a person recently it was a job I didn’t really wanna do didn’t care if I got it like you busy and I could tell that they were just price shopping. I have probably excepted 10 payments for estimates and maybe one of them led to a job so my Spidey senses are right. One I couldn’t believe they turned down but it was like $150 for the estimate so I came out to look at this mini kitchen remodel they wanted to do butcher block countertops so I included staining the countertops adding outlets for a garbage disposal and plumbing work Plus repairing rotted and moldy drywall and then putting cabinets back I think the quote was 2300 and they said that was skyrocket high and they would never pay that. And I didn’t care because I got the estimate fee had I not that would’ve just been a complete waste of time. These were do it yourself kind of people so that has become one of my red flags of somebody does their own projects it gives them an un resonable expectation for how much a project should cost.

  • God bless you brother! I have been doing commercial and residential swimming pool construction and renovation for over 30 years and been working for my self since I got my license over 20 years ago but, down here in Miami the competition is either unlicensed, illegal immigrants, or whore themselves out and end up either ripping the homeowner off, abandoning the job and go out of business in a few months yet I still get idiots considering these other kind of guys. Lately my wife deals with the intake and accurately ballparks over the phone and we can tell who is serious by the way they speak so we will go out 9/10 times we sign a contract on the spot. Its impossible to charge for estimates, even on a $100K job. Miami sucks, I would sell my home and leave but, that will end in divorce so I am stuck here until further notice. The only change I have made is I now charge $200 per hour for commercial estimates and general contractors who never give me work anyway. Most people here will not pay, now and then someone does. GC’s here are a$$ holes they just want someone to do their bid work so they can land the job and then they do it themselves or hire the illegal immigrant bunch.

  • YOU CAN THINK OF QUOTES VS ESTIMATES AS: SO AND SO SAID THIS, AND I QUOTE “YAYDAYADYAYDAYADA..”.. THAT PERSON IS SPEAKING BACK WHAT YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE SAID VERBATIM.. THIS CAN BE CONSIDERED A HARD PRICING, WHILE AN ESTIMATE FLOATS AROUND A ZONE OF THE FINAL PRICE.. I WOULD AVOID SAYING OR LETTING A CUSTOMER SAY “QUOTE” IN CONVERSATION, AS THIS CAN COME BACK TO HAUNT. MAKE SURE ALL YOUR PAPERWORK SAYS ESTIMATE WHEN YOU MEAN ESTIMATE, AND QUOTE WHEN YOU MEAN QUOTE AND TO THAT SOMETHING THAT CONFIRMS THAT THE PRICE WONT BE ADJUSTED AND IS GOOD FOR FOR AT LEAST 30-90 DAYS IF WORK HASNT STARTED.

  • Well pricing will vary a great deal from one state to the next or even one city to the next especially if it is a really long ways away. I think you’re in Florida, well I am in Nevada 2000 miles away so Pricing in Vegas might be a lot different. I know free estimates is a big thing out here but I only do window coverings and work with solar panel companies and water softener companies as well. But I don’t think the landscapers and flooring companies or even pool companies charge for estimates either.

  • I just had an excavator come out to my clients property and do a free quote/estimate/whatever the fuck you want to call it for free. I would never pay for an estimate. There are plenty of contractors who would give an estimate for free. If you have money to burn, sure I guess pay for an estimate LoL.
