How Large The Inside Of The Roman Coliseum Was?

The Colosseum, an elliptical amphitheatre in Rome, Italy, is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian in 72 and the massive structure measured approximately 189 by 156 meters (620 by 513 feet). The primary building material of the Roman Colosseum was an estimated 100,000 cubic meters (3.5 million cubic feet) of marble, stone, and timber.

The Colosseum’s most distinctive feature was the arena upon which gladiators, prisoners, convicts, and wild animals fought and died. The Colosseum was famous for being the largest Roman ampitheatre and hosting gladiator fights, mock naval battles, wild animal hunts, and public executions. It was often attended by Roman emperors.

The Colosseum is an elliptical structure made of stone, concrete, and tuff, standing four stories tall at its highest point. It measures 620 by 513 feet (189 by 156 meters) and stands four stories tall at its highest point. The ovoid central arena has a length of 287 ft. and a width of 180 feet. The Colosseum walls surrounding this arena are 15 feet high.

The Colosseum’s interiors include gladiator tunnels that run underground to trapdoors and an arena that can seat more than 50,000 people. Contemporary estimates claim the Colosseum could seat up to 87,000 people, but modern, more conservative estimates put that number closer to 50,000 people. The elliptical arena measures 85 meters by 53 meters and is set on a north-west to south-east axis, with its main axis measuring 189 meters and its shorter one measuring 156 meters.
