How High Should External Lights Be Hung?

Progress Lighting provides a guide on selecting the right size and height for outdoor lighting fixtures to create an ideal atmosphere in outdoor spaces. The guide suggests that a wall sconce near the front door should be about one-third the height of the door, while for a 9-foot door, hang the light at about 6 feet from the ground. If hanging lights on both sides of the door, hang them about one.

Sizing outdoor lights at a door involves measuring the height of the door in inches. For one light, look for one that is 1/3 the door’s height, or for two lights, look for ones that are 1/4 the door’s height. Lights need to be high enough to illuminate the immediate porch area and steps within a few feet of the door. Most designers suggest two lights, one on each side, for a front door and a single fixture for a garage.

Modern porch light fixtures can have a significant impact on how it looks and feels. To determine the most ideal lighting setup, consult experts at Wirecutter for tips on hanging outdoor string lights, mistakes to avoid, and the correct fixture-to-house proportion, size, and mounting for outdoor fixtures.

When mounting exterior wall lights beside a door, position the fixtures at eye level, or 60″-65″ from the ground. Outdoor porch lights work best when placed above shoulder height to keep direct light out of your eyes (5.5-6″) and help with tasks like cleaning. Porch light height should be around 6 to 10 feet in height, and the bottom of the light should hang at least 7 feet off the ground.

For a front door with a hanging lantern, the lantern height should be approximately 1/5 the door’s height. Hanging lanterns are hung using chain or stems, and fixtures should be placed 4 to 6 feet apart at a height of 3 feet above the ground.

It is recommended that outdoor sconces and wall lights be positioned at a height of between 66 and 72 inches above the floor in front door and entry areas. The bottom of the light fixture should be one-third of the height from the ceiling to the floor. For ceilings under 10 feet, hang with a clearance of seven to 7. 5 feet. For eight-foot ceilings, hang kitchen pendants 30 to 36 inches above the kitchen island, adding two to three inches for every foot above eight feet. Porch light height should be around 6 to 10 feet to cast a wide range of light, allowing people to see their surroundings. This is also true for lighting above decks, walkways, and landscaping. The exact height depends on the type of light and its brightness. Landscape lighting should be left to a professional, as it is crucial to install lights thoughtfully within a design, as there are no “small details” when it comes to outdoor lighting. It is best to leave the installation to a professional for optimal results.

Outdoor lighting applications should use foot candles (fc) for sports fields, professional games, and building exteriors. The illumination capacity of a light fixture is determined by the bulb’s brightness, beam angle, and distance from the subject. Foot-candles measure light level relative to the distance from the light source, with one foot-candle able to light up one square foot of surface with one lumen (lm). Lumens measure the total light output from the source, and the foot-candle measurement changes as the subject moves away from the source.
