Abdominal tenderness is a condition where pressure on an area of the abdomen causes pain or discomfort. It can be caused by various factors, including inflammation, injury, and medical conditions. Stomach pain after eating is most commonly caused by the normal contractions/motions of the stomach as it churns and breaks down food with stomach acid. Abdominal pain is common between the chest and pelvic regions and can be caused by various illnesses such as Gastritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach lining.
Abdominal point tenderness is the pain experienced when pressure is placed over a certain part of the belly area (abdomen). There are three body views (front, back, and side) that can cause abdominal tenderness. If tenderness remains unchanged or increases when abdominal muscles are tensed (positive Carnett’s sign), the abdominal wall is likely the origin of pain.
Abdominal pain can be indicative of many ailments, such as gas and constipation, gallstones, or pancreatitis. Acid reflux (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, or GORD) causes discomfort or burning pain in the upper abdomen, known as heartburn. Constant dull or aching abdominal pain is usually caused by distention or edema of the wall of a hollow viscus. Pain from stretch of the liver capsule is another common cause of abdominal tenderness.
Abdominal pain is commonly stemmed from three primary causes: digestive disorders, infections, and issues associated with the female reproductive system.
📹 How to Know if Stomach Pain is Serious
There are three things to look for when it comes to abdominal pain. What kind of pain is it? Where is it coming from?
How do I know if my stomach lining is inflamed?
Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining caused by excessive alcohol, spicy foods, or smoking. Symptoms may include stomach pain, belching, nausea, vomiting, abdominal bleeding, feeling full, and blood in vomit or stool. Treatment usually involves antacids and other medications to reduce stomach acid. To prevent gastritis, avoid irritant foods and drinks and quit smoking.
To maximize your healthcare provider visit, know the reason for the visit, write down questions you want answered, bring someone to help you ask questions, and note any new diagnoses, medicines, treatments, or tests. Be aware of the side effects, ask if your condition can be treated in other ways, understand the purpose of a test or procedure, and what to expect if you don’t take the medicine or have the test or procedure. If you have a follow-up appointment, write down the date, time, and purpose, and know how to contact your provider if you have questions.
Why is my stomach swollen and tender to touch?
Abdominal distension is often caused by digestive problems that accumulate gas and digestive contents. Causes can include functional indigestion, food intolerances, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as constipation causing feces and digestive contents build-up. Healthcare providers treat abdominal distension by examining the abdomen, determining the location of the outward curve, and examining the internal organs.
The abdominal organs can be classified as solid or hollow. Solid organs include the liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries, and uterus. They can become enlarged due to inflammation or growths, and can be palpable through the skin. Imaging tests can confirm the condition, and additional testing and treatment may be necessary depending on the condition.
Hollow organs include the stomach, small intestine, colon, gallbladder, bile ducts, fallopian tubes, uterus, and bladder. They are only palpable if distended and can become enlarged by inflammation or growths. They can also become swollen with digestion products, pregnancy, or internal bleeding. Imaging tests can help clarify the cause of abdominal distension.
Why does my skin hurt when I touch it but there’s nothing there?
Allodynia is a rare symptom resulting from nerve-related conditions, causing pain from actions that aren’t typically painful. Research from 2014 suggests that up to 1 in 2 people with neuropathic pain experience allodynia. It’s not a diagnosed condition, but a symptom associated with certain types of pain. Vivianne Tawfik, a board certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, explains that allodynia is associated with certain types of pain and is treated accordingly.
Why does the outer lining of my stomach hurt?
Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining, caused by factors like infection, alcohol, medications, and allergic and immune conditions. It can be acute or chronic, with severe attacks lasting a day or two. Treatment options include avoiding exposure to known irritants and medication to reduce gastric juices. It can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication and avoiding certain medications.
Why does my stomach hurt when I press on it?
Abdominal pain is a common feeling that can be caused by various factors, including viral gastroenteritis, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, food allergies, lactose intolerance, food poisoning, and stomach viruses. It is important to know when abdominal pain needs immediate medical attention and to avoid certain conditions such as colon cancer or early cases of appendicitis.
Mild abdominal pain can be managed by sipping water or other clear fluids, avoiding solid food for the first few hours, and eating small amounts of mild foods like rice, applesauce, or crackers after vomiting. Antacids may help with high abdominal pain after meals, especially if you are experiencing heartburn or indigestion.
If abdominal pain persists for more than a week, doesn’t improve within 24 to 48 hours, bloating lasts more than two days, or has diarrhea for more than five days, it is essential to seek medical attention. There are three body views (front, back, and side) that can help identify specific body areas.
The process of digesting food involves several organs in the body. The esophagus pushes food into the stomach, which mixes and breaks down proteins. The stomach then propels the food into the small intestine, where it further digests and absorbs nutrients. Secretions from the pancreas in the small intestine neutralize acid in the intestine, while bile from the gallbladder and liver emulsify fat and enhances fatty acid absorption. The large intestine temporarily stores and concentrates the remaining waste until it is passed out as waste.
Why is the skin on my stomach sensitive to touch?
Abdominal tenderness can range from mild to severe, with rebound tenderness causing an exacerbation of pain when pressure is released. Peritonitis, a condition involving irritation or infection of the peritoneum tissue, can result in the formation of abdominal abscesses, appendicitis, specific types of hernias, Meckel’s diverticulum, and ovarian torsion. In the event of abdominal point tenderness, it is imperative to seek emergency medical assistance without delay.
Why is the outside of my stomach tender?
Abdominal pain can be caused by various factors such as digestion, injury, infection, or disease, and may originate from an internal organ, muscles, or skin in the abdominal wall. It’s important to consult a healthcare provider to determine the cause. Most common causes are temporary and not serious, such as digestion issues or post-eating discomfort. Some life-threatening conditions may feel mild, while others may feel intense. The severity of the pain doesn’t necessarily indicate the severity of the condition.
Why would my stomach be tender to the touch?
Abdominal tenderness is a common condition causing pain and soreness in the abdomen, chest, or groin. Common causes include appendicitis, which occurs when the appendix becomes blocked by feces, and abdominal abscess. The severity of abdominal tenderness can range from mild to severe. If pressure is removed, it causes rebound tenderness or Blumberg sign. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Is tender stomach normal?
Abdominal discomfort is a common occurrence and is not always indicative of a severe underlying condition. The severity of the pain does not necessarily correlate with the underlying cause of the condition. For example, severe abdominal pain may be caused by viral gastroenteritis, while potentially fatal conditions such as colon cancer or early appendicitis may present with mild or no pain.
What is the inflammation on the outside of the stomach?
Peritonitis is defined as an inflammatory process affecting the abdominal wall and internal organs. It is frequently initiated by bacterial infections. It is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical intervention. The abdominal organs, including the stomach and liver, are encased in the visceral peritoneum. The recommended course of treatment includes hospitalization, antibiotic therapy, and surgical intervention. If not treated in a timely manner, it can result in life-threatening complications.
Why does my stomach hurt to press on?
Stomach pain can be mild or severe, causing infections, inflammation, menstrual cramps, blockages, growths, and abdominal diseases. Most causes are not serious, but some may indicate a serious medical condition. Common causes include gas, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, stress, stomach flu/gastroenteritis, acid reflux, food poisoning, and vomiting. Severe stomachaches can be severe and impact daily functioning. If the pain is severe enough to cause fetal position, seek immediate medical care from a Baptist Health provider.

Had some dodgy instant Chinese food a while ago, and puked my guts up minutes ago. Between that had sweats, then chills and shakes along with the nausea. Was half tempted to head to the ER, until I blew chunk anyways.. feel a bit better now. Glad I keep an emergency bucket bedside for such things, especially being a trucker. Restroom is a hike across the parking lot for me..😅

Drinking ginger tea will help. Let about 8-10oz of water come to a boil, pour in a cup. Wash the ginger, peel the ginger and slice the ginger in cubes and put in a mug/cup. Place something over the cup to keep the heat inside to allow for steeping for about 5 mins. Drink and let the ginger do its thing. The stomach cramps, diahrreah, and vomiting will lessen if not stop altogether.
