Have The Models’ Interiors Been Vegan?

Tesla has been introducing vegan leather interiors in its Model S and Model X since mid-2017. The company began using vegan leather in mid-2017, with the first Model S featuring Ultra White synthetic leatherette. In 2016, Musk announced that the Model 3 would be available with a vegan interior, and all Tesla seats became available from synthetic materials in mid-2017. The Picanto 1 and Rio 1 interiors are vegan-friendly, with no leather or animal-sourced parts. Kia’s new EV will offer a fully vegan version next year.

The 2022 Model S Plaid interior, which starts shipping in March, features a refreshed exterior, simplified interior, and the option for a more powerful powertrain that allows the car to travel at least 520 miles. While car manufacturers are taking the issue of “vegan leather” interiors seriously, there is no evidence to suggest they are making efforts towards removing animals from the rest of the car.

Tesla no longer offers real leather seats in any cars, but the “vegan leather” that Tesla began using across the line in mid-2017 is now available in all models. The only remaining holdout is the steering wheel. Tesla has recently updated the Model S with a new “cream interior”, and all interior options on Model S are now vegan. A new seat developed in-house featuring “Ultra White synthetic leather” serves as a vegan faux-leather option for Tesla buyers. The most recent reshuffle of Tesla Model S and Model X options and pricing also took away the leather seating option, leaving only synthetic seating.

What are Tesla vegan leather seats made of?

Polyurethane (PU) is the most common type of synthetic leather used in Tesla car interiors, a mixture of plastic chemicals and petroleum compounds. Its top coat allows for customization in looks, textures, and feels. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or vinyl, is considered outdated due to its plasticky feel. Synthetic vegan leathers have been criticized for their environmental impact due to microplastics. However, they are cruelty-free and cheaper than real leather.

Organic vegan leather, made from plant-based materials, is eco-friendly, using byproducts from existing harvests and typically being biodegradable. Both synthetic and organic vegan leathers offer alternatives to traditional leathers.

When did Tesla start using vegan leather?

Automakers, particularly in electric vehicles, have been promoting their leather-free interiors, often using the term “vegan” in marketing materials. This trend began during Tesla’s 2015 shareholder meeting, when PETA requested the company to become the first cruelty-free automaker. Since then, vegan leather has become a must for premium electric cars, with Rivian’s R1S and R1T interior options featuring perforated vegan leather seats. Polestar’s MicroTech is also a vegan-friendly leather alternative for the Polestar 3.

Porsche introduced its first leather-free interior in the Taycan with Race-Tex. Continental, a tire company, recently exhibited bio-based hide-free leatherlikes in a tiny home, describing the material as artificial leather but calling it “vegan” because it sounds better. The name game between synthetic leather, fake leather, and leatherette has been a topic of debate, with some EV buyers comparing it to a more sustainable alternative.

Does vegan leather get dirty easily?

Synthetic leather doesn’t form a patina over time, and its surface starts drying and cracking after a few months. It’s sensitive to staining and requires regular cleaning. Vegan leather, on the other hand, requires specific cleaning methods to maintain its durability. To clean vegan leather bags and shoes, use mild laundry detergent or soap, avoid harsh detergents, and use a non-abrasive material like microfibre to apply the soap mixture. This ensures the bag remains as good as new for a long time. The overall cleaning process is standard and ensures the bag remains as good as new.

Are Mercedes vegan?

Car manufacturers like Rivian and Mercedes-Benz are adopting vegan materials in their new models, promoting sustainability and eco-friendliness. Polestar’s WeaveTech and MicroTech are dirt-and-moisture resistant materials inspired by wetsuits, while Nordico is made from recycled materials like PET bottles. Fisker models have vegan interiors made from old tires, plastic bottles, recovered plastic from the ocean, and fishing nets. MINI models use Vescin, a recyclable synthetic leather made from recycled materials.

BMW’s Veganza and Mercedes-Benz’s Artico are also vegan leathers. Kia plans to phase out animal-based leather and use BIO PU (Bio-Polyurethane) derived from natural materials like corn and eucalyptus. These companies are making it easier for drivers to choose vegan-friendly, sustainable materials in their vehicles.

Monika Kielczewska, an International Scout at Elite, is a passionate vegan who has eliminated all animal-based products from her diet, including meat, eggs, and milk. She believes that eating plant-based food has a profoundly positive impact on personal health and the overall wellbeing of the earth, both for animals and the environment. Monika works closely with models as they take their first steps in the industry, inspiring some to follow the vegan nutrition plan.

Monika’s journey began around eight years ago when she was shocked by research on dairy, which revealed that milk was poisoning her bones and teeth. She decided not to follow the masses but to do her own research. Being vegan is not a diet, but a lifestyle. The benefits of being vegan start with nutrition, as it helps people understand that everything they eat is killing them. She encourages reading the ingredients of foods and cosmetics, as they can be harmful to both humans and the environment.

Monika believes that being vegan is not just about health, but also about the environment. She believes that not only is it important to avoid meat consumption, but also to save water by not showering for six months and to educate yourself on the health benefits of veganism. She suggests starting with non-dairy alternatives like almond, rice, or oat milk, choosing avocado or hummus instead of butter, and reading books and documentaries to understand why hospitals are filled with people with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer, rather than protein-deficient vegans.

A study by dealer group Dick Lovett has ranked Ford as the top car manufacturer offering vegan-friendly interiors, with 28 models, including the Mustang Mach-E electric car, available as standard. Honda, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, and Mercedes also made the list. The Range Rover Velar was named the “optimal vegan-friendly car for off-roading” due to its artificial suede steering wheel and seats, and faux leather dashboard. PETA updated its survey this year, adding new standouts like Mercedes Vito, Kia EV6, Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, Volvo C40 Recharge, and Citroën C4.

Other manufacturers offering vegan options include Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Smart, Toyota, and Vauxhall. Tesla and Polestar are also promoting vegan interiors on their electric vehicles. Dacia is also a notable vegan option on a budget.

Is Tesla Model S vegan?

Tesla, founded by Elon Musk in 2019, announced that all interiors of the company would be made from cloth or vegan leather, free from animal products. This move has raised concerns about the quality of the interiors and whether vegan leather is better for the environment. Initially, many Tesla models came standard with leather-wrapped steering wheels and seats. However, by 2017, synthetic seats were available upon request, and by 2019, Tesla had 100 vegan interiors.

Do any cars have vegan leather?

Vegan-friendly car interiors are becoming increasingly popular, with manufacturers using alternatives like synthetic leather, such as Artico vegan leather, Sensatec, Alcantara, Dinamica, and Race-Tex microfibre. Polestar has introduced powerRibsTM and ampliTexTM technologies to create lightweight and safety-conscious interior panels using natural fibers. Flax, a bio-material ideal for crop rotation programs, is used in these composites. A 3D-knit material, known in the fashion and active footwear industries, is used as seating surfaces. The base material is 100 recycled yarn derived from PET bottles, reducing waste.

The global leather industry, worth $400bn a year, consumes over a billion animal hides and requires 130 chemicals, including cyanide, resulting in a significant carbon footprint. Top luxury cars, like Rolls-Royce and Bentley limousines, use up to 18 cow hides. Wool production is also ethically questionable, with sheep and goats contributing to climate change, soil erosion, and water pollution. Raising sheep and goats contributes to 474 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the emissions of 103 million cars per year. Vegan or synthetic fabrics have a smaller environmental impact.

Is vegan leather better than real leather?

Vegan leather is generally of lower quality than real leather, and it is less durable and thinner, making it susceptible to tearing or scuffing over time. To unwrinkle vegan leather, avoid using an iron directly on the material, as synthetic pleathers with plastic in them do not mix well with heat. High-quality faux leathers can be steamed, but care should be taken, and the heat should not exceed 30 seconds.

To clean vegan leather, wash it in warm water to prevent contamination from baking into the pleather’s plastic material. It is important to avoid heating the leather for more than 30 seconds, and to avoid using synthetic pleathers directly on the material.

  • Thanks Joe! The “vegan leather” is a plastic ultrasuede, which is a very expensive, high end material. Supposedly it’s much more durable than leather. It’s more commonly found in multimillion dollar yachts. I’ve sat in these seats in a Model X and they’re very comfortable. The ultrasuede is very soft and supple to the touch, and the foam cushions under the covering are firm. The result is very good. Excellent seating. Whitish carpets seem very impractica and hard to keep clean, but the white seats have proven very durable in Model X and Model S. Seats are very important and Tesla is getting them right, especially the newer ones (which go into Model 3 also). Tesla seats have improved and are now excellent.

  • Does anybody know what the vegan seats are actually made of? A lot of people are quick to say “vinyl” because that is normally the fake leather substitute but it isn’t vinyl. Tesla says it’s a “new synthetic material” and of course cheap vinyl isn’t anything new. I’ve been told everything from seaweed to cork. Can anybody confirm? My guess would be seaweed or a blend. I think it’s kind of cool that they are trying revolutionary materials in the interior.
