  • I just bought a “bullet nose” Dunlap 5244 via Craig’s List. Paid $40.00 for it, but it was in nice condition for its age. Still has most of the red paint on it and the embossed “Dunlap” on the side (versus the Dunlap badge) has the black paint on the raised letters. I cleaned it up a little and think I’ll keep it as it is even with a splotch of white paint still on it. Dunlap was an economic tool brand sold by Sears up until the early 1960s. Apparently they didn’t come with the lifetime guarantee that comes with the Craftsman brand still sold by Sears and now others. Terrific job on your restoration and thanks for sharing!

  • When you had the Screw out I think could have found the pin that held it in place where you ground off the end of it. and drilled or punched it out, replacing it with a Roll Pin. Sad that you welded it instead. 2 coats of paint would have looked better. Sand or Bead blasting prepares stuff much better for painting. Every threaded connection should have been greased. You still have a good vise.
