Michaels, founded in 1973 by Michael J. Dupey, is an arts and crafts store that has grown over the years. In 1984, it was first publicly traded on NASDAQ under the parent entity The Michaels Companies, which operated 16 stores. Over the next decade, the company acquired craft and hobby stores in local and regional markets, expanding into the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Northeast, and Aaron Brothers Holdings, Inc. By 1996, Michaels’ sales reached $1. 24 billion with 450 stores. In 2006, private equity groups Bain Capital and the Blackstone Group purchased Michaels Stores for $6 billion, taking it private.
In 2007, Martha Stewart and Michaels launched “Martha Stewart Crafts”, an online resource for home DIYers with how-to instructions, projects, and crafting products. In 2008, Michaels opened its 1, 000th store. In 2010, Michaels began a partnership with Chef Duff to feature the Duff Goldman Collection in its stores.

Does Hobby Lobby own Michaels?
Hobby Lobby’s 985 stores generate around $7B in revenue in 2021, with $7. 1M per venue and $129 per square foot. The business is still managed by founder David Green, who is 80, and his son Steve Green is President. Michaels’ 1, 158 stores generate around $5B in revenue, with $4. 3M per venue and $237 per square foot. Michaels Stores, Inc. also owns Aaron Brothers, a chain with similar performance to Michaels.
Jo-Ann’s 852 locations generate $2. 4B in revenue, with $2. 8M per location and $152 per square foot. Both companies have different business and service models, with Jo-Ann having a 50. 6 gross margin and higher service levels. This higher level of service and potentially higher in-stocks may explain why Jo-Ann has been able to retain customer engagement and sales productivity levels during 2022 as consumers shifted to out-of-home experiences.
Comparable-store sales for 1H22 were down 10, but a three-year CAGR basis showed flat sales. However, higher ocean freight, supply chain costs, and inflationary costs severely dented profitability in 1H22, and it is likely that Michaels and Hobby Lobby also suffered similarly. However, Jo-Ann’s management expects a significant recovery in profitability in 2H22.
The stronger performance of Hobby Lobby may be due to effective marketing, strong execution, or a combination of these factors.

I love these shopping vlogs but you need to angle the camera higher. Maybe try using a go pro that you can wear around your neck or just hold. They are small it would be easy to hide if staff doesn’t want you filming. Just saying. I know our go pro fits in my hand. It’s the same size as an apple pods charger case.
Some people drive me nuts when they say “why is this out so early?” Home crafters have to get their stuff done and made so they can do the craft shows, and flea markets. I used to do vendor events selling a knock off version of the jewelry brand origami owl and met a lot of crafters. Michaels has some cute home decor but Hobby Lobby IMO has the best home decor though. Their artificial flowers are BEAUTIFUL!!! I also like Hobby Lobby’s baking section better as well. Have you gone to a Hobby Lobby??? I can’t remember. Me and my CRS lol
