Does Gel For Decorating Get Hard?

Piping gel is an edible glue used for attaching decorations to baked goods, such as fondant shapes, cut-out cookies, or chocolates. Its thick, sticky texture makes it perfect for creating intricate designs that require flexibility. Piping gel does not harden like royal icing or fondant, but it can be hardened depending on the specific brand and formulation of the gel. Some cake decorating gels are designed to dry and create a hard surface.

Piping gel is a syrupy, often sweet, gel used primarily in cake decorating. The name comes from the technique typically used to apply it, which involves using an icing bag. Small, thin amounts of piping gel will eventually dry, but it might stay rubbery, so don’t expect it to be stiff enough to stand upright on its own.

Writing gel, a clear gel that can be colored, is frequently used to write on cakes or add more stretch to buttercream. It stays relatively soft pretty much indefinitely. However, if you don’t take the time to stir the gel properly before you pipe, it can become a little lumpy. Piping gel does not harden, but it will thicken if left out uncovered for a very long period of time. It will dry with a very thin crust, like when the frosting on a cupcake hardens a bit, but it won’t harden like Royal icing.

In conclusion, piping gel is an excellent edible glue for attaching decorations to baked goods, but it does not harden like royal icing or fondant. It remains soft and pliable, making it ideal for intricate designs that require flexibility. However, it is important to stir the gel properly before using it to avoid lumpiness.

  • Fun fact, most of these names come from what pigments are used. For example, black brown, probably used a very light black brown mix to create the orange tone. It’s why the numbers are that way too, because the letters are the pigments, and the number is the unique identifier within that colour bracket. I must admit, alcohol markers never act how they should on the cap, so you should always swatch.

  • I have over 250 alcohol brush markers and they are so much fun to use and yes the colors sometimes dont match, I go mostly for copic and tombow inks because they are pretty good. But having a sketchbook of color coded marker colors will help out a lot if you have been using several brands. Try that it might help

  • I have an idea that I haven’t done yet but also haven’t heard anyone suggest. Swatching out the colors then cut them in a shape that would match the ends of the caps, write the number, and then glue them on both caps of each pen. This way your swatch is directly on the cap and you don’t have to refer to your swatch sheet every time you need to choose a color.

  • Love your nails hehe 💕 I’m always think about getting some alcohol markers but I always end up not buying some. I don’t know which brand I should get, I dont know how many colours I should get, they are somehow expensive and ahhhh I just don’t know. But they look so cool in articles and I want to try them :c Also the colours really confuse me just like you said. HOW CAN A DARK COLOUR BE LIGHT?

  • This is called colour coding & it’s sometimes based on the pigments that were used hence the colour names differ. In any other case also, like for coloured pencils, acrylic paints etc. the same can happen. Which is why companies include swatch cards & as a professional artist, I always recommend swatching any set of colours before using them 🙌 Ps: I know that article idea was a clickbait & it worked 😅

  • someone else made this statement and i agree; names usually come from pigments used esp with smaller companies. its less work to just use the pigment names as the colour names. dark violet light makes more sense that it seems. its a darker violet shade, but violets are never super dark. so its still light, but for that particular one its a darker shade of a light colour

  • Thank you for mentioning this. I just started learning with ohuhu markers and I was so confused about why everything looked off. I finally swatched all of them and have my swatch cards out at all times. Idk why art brands can’t get this down. Makeup brands were notoriously bad at matching colors to the product but in recent years gotten almost spot on with most packaging and product colors

  • Frrrr i love how they look, but i have over 200 markers and 2 FULL pages of a BIG sketchbook JUST with swatches and i rarely even use them anymore cus my adhd wount let me juggle the swatch pages, the 3 boxes of markers, AND the mixing of colors anymore, it’s just too much. I miss when i only has like 15 markers… yeah the caps still didnt match but i at least didnt have to SWIM in markers for 15 minutes to find one JUST to try it out and realize it doesnt look the same in the paper im using as it does in the swatch anyways 😭

  • BRO I SWEAR ONE OF MY COLORS SAY PASTEL GREEN EVEN THO ITS LIGHT YELLOW AND ALSO ONE SAYS BLUE GRAY EVEN THO ITS GREY andd One says brown green.. its not brown or green its poopy greenish brownish yellowish and one says mauve shadow.. its not shadowish or mauve it clear.. istg.. and one says marigold ITS NOT GOLD ITS ORANGE and melon yellow its poopy peeish green yellow browny and one says pastel pink well at first its purple but after 1-2 mins its pastel pink..

  • How Sharpie names colors: White(cultured pearl) Sakura pink(sasquatch socks) Red(period blood) Orange(black brown) Yellow(wash the dog) Lemon(sea glass) Lime green(alien armpit) Mint green(tropical forest) Turquoise(leafy canopy) Sky blue(acid wash jeans) Blue(b’dazzled blue) Purple(patriarch) Violet(dark violet light) Pink(razzmatazz)

  • Relatable, my sister bought alcohol markers for my birthday, but I don’t think the brand is very good. I was drawing something today, but I noticed that I have 5 markers that are all called ‘’Warm grey’’ I wanted to draw with them because I needed a grey marker. But when I opened it, the marker was PINK for some reason. I checked the other 4,but no. The other 4 were also pink.

  • Plot twist – The colors will also change depending on what type of paper you use! Marker paper, watercolor, mixed media, velium, bristol, cartridge, pastel, etc. It also can change depending on what the exact color the paper is. Light cream paper that almost looks white will render a different shade marker vs completely white paper!

  • Yeah I just got a 48 piece ohuhu set and when I was switching them the color scarlet was a dark red unlike the color of its cap which was a vibrant red. Them I realized that there was no vibrant reds. (Y’know what I’m mean, like basic we first picture when we think of red.) Now I don’t have a basic red in my alcohol marker set
