The exterior steel door sealant and glazing putty used to seal glass can deteriorate over time due to the effects of the outdoors. To ensure the security and elegance of your home’s entrance, glazed external doors offer both security and elegance. However, the installation process may be more complex than regular glass doors due to factors like frame alignment, proper sealing, and the need for a new frame seal, door realignment, or a weather/rain bar fitted to the bottom of the door.
To seal an external door, consider sealing the gap between the door and the frame and the frame itself. For sealing around the exterior of a door, choose a GE-branded 100 silicone sealant, like GE Supreme Silicone Window and Door sealant. Glazing, a putty-like substance that surrounds glass on the outside of windows, is critical for blocking air leaks and making your home more secure.
For secondary sealing, clear latex caulk can be cleaned up, painted, and blended with various wood and metal materials. It is not normal to glaze a door as opening and closing will loosen the glazing over time. Wood stops are more common in the experience. If you plan to use a dark glaze, seal the door first and apply the glaze after sealing the door.
To properly seal and paint an exterior door, place it to the inside, using glazing tape to seal the outside and keep the weather out. Then, trim the interior and apply a coat of paint or clear sealer on the front, back, top, and bottom. Otherwise, the door will deteriorate and begin to rot eventually.
