W/w dogs have a harsh wire texture but decreased furnishings, overall coat length, and shedding similar to non-wire animals. Animals homozygous for long coat (l/l) and possessing at least one copy of W will have long, soft coats with furnishings, rather than wirey coats. The furnishing gene is the most important way to predict a Goldendoodles coat, as it is a dominant gene found in dogs with long coat hair. Furnishings can be seen around the eyes, ears, and nose of a puppy. A Goldendoodle with a good quality diet and regular grooming may continue to exhibit a glossy coat, while a Goldendoodle with less attentive owners may require to be kept in a crate.
Furnishings are longer facial hair including eyebrows, mustache, and beard found on most Goldendoodles. Golden Retrievers have an “open face” with short facial hair, sometimes known as a flat coat. There are multiple options to show your sartorial creativity when it comes to styling long coats. Building long coat outfits is relatively easier than other unique types of outerwear.
Dogs with F/F genotype (N/N in the Improper Coat test) are expected to display furnishings. Furnishings are the most important gene for reducing shedding in doodles and are best when paired with the genes for long hair. They give a bearded fluffiness or “curlieness” that makes a doodle look like a doodle. Furnishings are a dominant trait, so only one copy from one parent is needed to get the look.

Great Review. What would you apply on a a bed head board and frame that is painted with chalk paint? Main concern is the gassing out from thinners if I use a wax. Interested in your opinion. Bees wax and or a H20 water based matte or satin floor poly products are other options I am considering. Again, the main concern is the smell of the finished product on the head board. Thanks in advance for your opinion. Sky
I painted an end table with chalk paint and applied one coat of wax. Then I happened to watch this article and like the idea of something a little more durable since we have drinks and food on the end table at times. Is it possible to use for instance the Dixie Bell clear coat on top of the one coat of wax I put on? If not, what would I use to take the wax off without stripping away any of the chalk paint? I would only want to apply the clear coat to the top of the table. Would it change the look of the table if I only used the clear coat on top and kept the wax on the rest of the table?
I’m in the process of painting my kitchen cabinets with chalk paint. I used the Chalked Matte Clear by Rustoleum on a couple of doors. Do you think it’s a good idea for kitchen cabinets? I’m not sure I love it, to be honest. My main concern is staining from food. I make a lot of jam and it is so messy to make!! LOL
Hi Christina, just purchased a China Hutch Cabinet that had been painted white over top. It needs a new updated fresh coat of TLC. Would you recommend sanding it first or just cleaning it with TSP . I want to achieve this look. Please help ! Can I send u a picture of what I want the end result to look like??
Christina, thank you for your article! I am in a bind and would love your best recommendation. I used Magnolia Home Chalk Paint on my dining room table and want to know which is the easiest and best top coat to put on it, so it can sustain glasses, plates, etc? perusal your article I am torn between the Jolie Wax, General Finishes Flat top coat or the Dixie Belle gator hyde. Which of these or is there something else you like better for this? Please let me know asap as I am in the middle of this now and have to finish in in the next 2 days!
Hi! I just finished my first project and I need to seal it. It is an old bookshelf, but I need to put the books back in place in the next week. Did you say it takes two weeks to thirty days for the wax to cure, or after waxing can I put the books back in the shelf within a few days? thanks and thanks for the great articles!
Hi Christina! I’m about to stain my new coffee table (pine). I’m going to use a polyurethane + stain then dry brush a white chalk paint over it. Which is the best sealant you would suggest?? Because it’s a coffee table, there might be a spill here and there so I need something that will protect against water. Thank you!!!
I refinished a bedroom dresser, used Annie Sloan clear wax. It’s been a month and a half and wonder why smudges show up from opening and closing the drawers. You can see them when sunlight hits it. Did I do something wrong? I painted my friends kitchen cabinets old white and now I’m afraid to finish them with the clear wax. Help🤔. I love your work. Thank you.
New subscriber to your website and just finished a HUGE chalk paint project (and thrilled with how it turned out). I used the Minwax Polycrylic and was disappointed with its streakiness and brush strokes but luckily it’s a distressed piece so it just adds character! My question is this… I need to refinish part of my stairs. I’ll be sanding the treads but I want to paint the rise of the stairs white. I’m considering using chalk paint to reduce the need to sand that part and was wondering what your thoughts are on a durable finish for stairs. Do you have any recommendations on something that would give a satin finish? Wondering if the Gator Finish might be suitable. Thanks!
When you apply wax how long does it take to dry to the touch so you can move the piece? I have a small painting area and need to do chairs!! Ugh. I can paint them there like 2 at a time but once the wax is on how long does it take to be able be to a touch them to move them to a different area to cure?
So a year ago, I got an end table and coffee table in my first home and I just wanted to be daring and have some fun so I found a article on Youtube that was perfectly done and my projects came out great! I am about to do a cedar chest, so I started looking up articles again. Have been perusal yours all day and recognized that end table in this article…….IT WAS YOURS THAT I FOLLOWED A YEAR AGO! HAHA…..subscribed now for sure 🙂 You’re amazing!
I just started using Dixie Belle products and love it, the way it goes on and the outcome is awesome. Big Mammo Butta in unscented and orange is on the way, just ordered this morning. I needed new furniture, tired of that the style and now all I have to do is use chalk paint and my whole home is looking totally different. I love the idea of what you did on that dresser with the gold, that’s was awesome.
Great article! I do have questions though…looking to chalk paint my kitchen cabinets. What do you recommend as a sealing topcoat & waterproofing finish so that grease or clean up in general of cabinets can be done without damaging the finish. And do you find chalk paint is durable enough in the kitchen or should I consider something else? Thanks in advance for your reply.
A great tip someone gave me was to apply the hemp oil using a fine sandpaper. So you pour oil more generously than usual, then you pass the find sandpaper in a small circular manner, and then remove the excess of oil with a cloth. This creates a very smooth surface… and if you want to get creative and distress some parts of the piece, then you can either sand it more intensely or use a coarser sandpaper in those spots.
Have you used the Gator Hide yet? If so, what did you think? I want to refurbish our coffee table. I can’t trust my husband and kids to not leave glasses and other food items on it, so I really need something waterproof for the top of the piece. Also, do you think I could get away with using a different topcoat on the rest of the piece? I plan to use stain on the top and chalk paint on the rest, like you did in your end table article.
I just painted a dresser white with regular paint and made the mistake of putting polyurethane on it. 🤦🏼♀️ it turned yellow. 😢 So a friend suggested I lightly sand it and apply chalk paint. It worked fairly well. I did have a few bubbles that had to be sanded. It’s not perfect. I don’t care for the wax finish, which is too matte for my taste. Is there another finish I can apply AFTER wax has been applied to get a glossier finish? Thanks so much.
Hello! I have a quick question. My puppy has been peeing on my furniture, and it has caused stains and discoloration. I need a clear furniture topcoat that can protect my furniture and repel my puppy’s pee. I am wondering if Gator Hide will work for this purpose, as I have heard that it can repel water. I am desperate to save my furniture and prevent my puppy from ruining it further. Thank you!…😢 Or if you have a better idea of which topcoat would protect my furniture. I am desperate at this point. Thank you in advance.😊
I just used a Rust-Oleum spray chalk paint (white), to restore a bathroom medicine chest. It’s my first time using this spray chalk paint. It’s easy to use and I’m okay with the results – did run a bit but that was my error. However, should I use a protective coat over the finished project since it’s in the bathroom? The chest is made of metal but the mirror has a wooden frame. Thanks for all your articles, I love ’em.
Help here . . .I just had my kitchen cabinets painted in Repose Gray and my kitchen walls are in a color by Benjamin Moore in Ashwood, now what I want to do is take an old bar height dining room table and chairs, take the leaf out to make it square to use in my kitchen and chalk paint it in shades of gray. It has a pretty slick top, and I am wondering if I should use something like dixie bell primer first. Also, any suggestion or pictures of techniques. Id appreciate it
I used AS Athenian black for my kitchen table and then finished with the matte lacquer- now my table is gray. I liked the look of the athenian before the laquer was applied. What is the best finish to use so that I do not get the milky effect of the AS lacquer or a polycrylic I hear does the same thing over dark colors. Is a pulyurethane better and more clear? I”m afraid wax will not hold up well on a kitchen table top. How about the general finishes flat? Also- what is the blackest black chalk paint to use? Thanks!
Great article! I have a couple of questions & would love your input. 1. Have you used A Sloans new pearlescent glaze? Do you think it would look good on a French Provincial dresser that is painted white? 2. Struggling to get the smell out of these two 100-year-old French Provincial dressers. I have wiped them down in white vinegar twice already and aired them outside in the sunlight. Any thoughts? Do you think that Big mammas Butta will help with the smell of mold/mildew? Help! Thanks 🙂
I painted the legs of my dining table black. I added some plaster of Paris and water to dull the semi gloss paint, which turned out nice. I initially applied a polyurethane and it did not look good, so I lightly sanded and repainted, again. What do u recommend to seal it? I was thinking about using a spray on polycrylic from the can. What do u think?
I am so addicted to your articles! They are so good and informative and convinced me to paint our old dining set with chalk paint. I am going to use General Finishes Oil Base Gel Stain, Java for the top as I would love to have a dark top and for the side and legs I will use Jolie Paint – Premier Chalk Finish Paint – Matte Finish – Gesso White. I am a bit confused about the top coat. Since it is a table that we will be using a lot should I go with Real Milk Paint Hemp Oil OR General Finishes High Performance Water Based Topcoat OR clear wax? Please help.
I painted three tables with Jolie Rouge and am struggling with making a decision about a strong top coat. I purchased Gator Hide and tried it on a sample with the red paint on it, as I applied the GH with the blue sponge, it removed some paint. These tables aren’t for me so I’m not sure what to use. It does have to be tough. I was going to use General Finishes but their web site states not good for chalk paint. I am uncomfortable with wax and I don’t think it is strong enough. Any suggestions? Thank you very much for your articles.
Can you apply a finishing wax over the water based clear coat after it dries for additional protection or is it an overkill? I put two coats of Country Chic Clear Coat on a night stand but I am worried it’s going to leave a water ring. Thanks! I enjoy all of your article. I am a newbie in the furniture painting hobby world!
Hi Christine I’m new to your Chanel and also new to using chalk paint I have painted my bed and lockers and wanted to white wash over the french linen From Annie Sloane but when I started it didn’t seem to look right so any tips would be of great help As I’m thinking now about just putting the top coat over the colour. Also you said in your article that the wax takes Up to 30 days to cure And as it’s my bed that I use I take it that I wouldn’t be able to use after 2/3 days Woukd that be the same if I use the water based varnish Loved the article and planning to go through your other ones to get some tips Thank you in advance for the advice Your pieces look fab
Do you need to worry about using a sealer that is food safe when finishing a kitchen table since food will be placed on it?. Granted the food will be on plates or in bowls but what about spills and kids grabbing whatever food went onto the table? What are your recommendations for finishing/sealing a kitchen table top that will make it safe? And also easy for clean up. Our kitchen table gets a lot of use from dining, to school work, to art projects, etc. It is a future project of mine. Thank you.
Hello😊 I been perusal your articles a lot and I just painted my kitchen cabinets and frame white. I would like your advice on this. I used chalk paint and I did used the clear polycrylic over it and it looks terrible there are shadows and looks like it’s still wet on spots but it’s not. Likely I only did the frame and I haven’t touch the doors I also spray painted the doors and they look perfect I love matte finish and I’m scare to use this again. Do you think a wax would work better? I would appreciate your help on that🤗😊 thank you so much in advance💕
Great article. I just painted a kitchen table in white chalk paint but when I put the poly on it it yellowed right away. I am afraid to use wax because i am not sure it can handle the abuse a kitchen table takes. What do you think I did wrong. I used Varathane Matte Clear Water based Polyurethane. Can you advise how I can protect this table without the yellowing.
I’m hoping that you have some advice for me! 🙂 I just finished chalk painting 2 bookcases in antique white, I used the Krylon brand from Lowe’s. Then I started trying to apply wax (again the Krylon brand) and the paint kept chipping/rubbing off! It seems to be ok if I barely touch it, but when I try to buff in the wax the paint comes off! What should I do? Any idea why this happened? Thanks for all your info.!
Hi Christina.. I am doing my bedroom furniture with white chalk paint. I’m also a beginner with chalk paint. Well I’ve used it on small items like candle sticks. I recently did my nightstand first yesterday. I noticed a little ‘crackling’ and somewhat more this morning. I watched your article because I wasn’t sure which to use for a sealer/top coat. I want to go with the wax, but I hope there is a less expensive brand of wax I could use, which would be a clear coat. I have a couple questions.. First what may cause the crackling? Would I be able to fix it? Also will clear coat wax turn yellow over time. That I do not want. Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you. Your article was very informative and appreciated.
Hi 🙂 I’m a new subscriber and appreciate all the information you shared in this article. I do have a question about chalk paint. I just painted my first piece ever and I messed it up 😕 The second coat seems to have rolled up some of the first coat and now it has lumpy areas that look terrible. 😕 Any suggestions on how I can smooth it out? If I use the wax to finish it can I use it right away or does it need to fully cure before I use it (it is my dinning room table)? Also I was wondering if I finish it with flat urethane how many coats are needed? I hope you will answer and appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you and GOD Bless you. April 🙂
Hi, have you used kilz chalk paint? It’s my first time using a chalk paint. It was a challenge and I did white over dark wood desk for my daughter. I was struggling with it. It looks ok. I used the oil kilz and they were’t that great. which wax do you suggest me to use for her desk. Also I wonder maybe I need to repaint again.
Thank you for the helpful info! I always enjoy perusal your articles and learning new tips! i get nervous when applying top coat on white surfaces as it always leaves streaks when drying, also sometimes it rubs off a bit of the chalk paint. do you have any recommendations? i don’t know what i’ve been doing wrong but i haven’t succeeded yet in applying top coat with sponge over chalk paint without peeling the paint. so far wax has been my favorite 🙂
Thanks so much for going over a big variety of topcoats. A few times I couldn’t catch what you said because you were speaking so fast. I think you were mentioning cure times for one or two of the products, maybe? You are cute as can be and have beautiful furniture/projects – exactly like I would like to produce for my home. Thanks again!
Christina, I just painted a coffee table with black chalk paint from Farmhouse (which I love that brand). I decided to apply wax after perusal this article. I had Minwax Paste Finishing at home but I hate the way it looks. I used a t-shirt and buffed after about 20 mins. You can see the pressure wipes. Will a second coat correct this or should I order Dixie Bell
