How to make a good cat room?
One may create a cozy cat nook with comfortable beds, cute hammocks, and long walkways for cat naps and daily exercise. It is important to ensure that these essentials complement the home decor without becoming an eyesore.
Is it OK to sleep with cat in room?
Lisa King, a freelance writer from Southern California, posits that sleeping with cats is inadvisable unless one is afflicted with allergies or a compromised immune system. She previously held the position of editor-in-chief of Pet Product News International, Dogs USA, and Natural Dog magazines. Additionally, King has authored a commercially successful murder mystery novel and a recently released novel, entitled Vulture au Vin.
Is a cat room a good idea?
Providing a designated space for a cat in their new environment can facilitate a more comfortable adjustment period. It may be beneficial to consider incorporating the cat’s familiar belongings into the new home before relocating them. The implementation of ingenious concepts can facilitate the creation of aesthetically pleasing and functional feline habitats within the domestic environment.
How do you set up a cat safe room?
To create a safe and private space for your cat, ensure it is private, free from guests, kids, and dogs. Remove potential hazards and provide a hiding space, such as a high box. Include essential items like fishing rod toys, puzzle toys, and feeding enrichment games. Place the litter tray in a quiet room, away from high footfall areas like hallways or kitchens. Avoid placing trays near scary objects or exposed areas, as cats may be reluctant to eat near their litter tray. Keep the toileting area away from the eating area. Each cat should have its own litter tray. If you have multiple cats, avoid placing trays next to each other.
As for the kitchen, place the cat’s water bowl and food bowl away from each other. If your cat struggles to drink enough, try a water fountain, as cats prefer moving water. This will help your cat feel more comfortable and satisfied.
Is a messy room bad for cats?
Cats can live in a messy house, but this can lead to stress, anxiety, and the accumulation of harmful substances. Cluttered spaces can also cause litter box usage and furniture destruction. Understanding feline behavior can help address common problem areas and foster a cleaner, more peaceful environment for both humans and cats. Scratching, an essential cat behavior, serves multiple purposes, including maintaining claw health, marking territory, and stretching muscles.
However, this natural behavior often comes at the expense of furniture, carpets, and walls. By understanding and addressing these issues, we can create a cleaner and more peaceful environment for both cats and humans.
Do cats like dark rooms?
A good night’s sleep is crucial for pets’ well-being, with dogs generally tolerant of dark environments due to enhanced night vision, and cats prefer cozy spaces for lower stress levels. Some pets with poor vision or trauma may dislike the dark, but a comfortable sleep environment, positive reinforcement, and treats can help alleviate their anxiety. Creating the right atmosphere is key to helping pets get the sleep they need to thrive. A good night’s sleep is essential for pets to have the energy required to live a happy, fulfilling life, as well-rested pets are energetic and playful when awake.
Do cats need a safe room?
Confinement is crucial for cats, especially shy or fearful ones, as they may feel overwhelmed when moving into a new place. A safe space provides a small space for them to feel secure and make them more sociable with you. This helps them become more interested in you and less worried about their territory.
Kittens also benefit from initial confinement to a small room or large cage/crate, allowing you to kitten-proof the rest of your house. This reinforces good litter box habits, prevents injury, and eliminates the need to search for your kitten. This is especially important when you cannot supervise during the kitten’s initial adjustment period and if you have a large home.
When moving into a new home, it is best to confine your cat to a safe room before and after the move to prevent them from being exposed to the chaos that comes with moving. Ensure that anyone helping with the move knows about the cat in the room by placing a sign on the door. When transporting your cat to their new home, put them in a secure carrier while they are still in the safe room.
In the new house, give your cat a safe room to adjust to before allowing them full access to the house. By providing a safe space for your cat, you can help them feel more comfortable and sociable in their new environment.
How do I make my cat not scared of my room?
Fearful cats often struggle with introduction to new homes, but they can gradually become more confident as they adjust to their new environment. To help them feel comfortable, confine them to a small, quiet room with hiding spots, such as boxes, pet carriers, cat trees, or blankets. Keep food, water, and litter box within easy reach. Once they feel comfortable, allow them to explore the rest of the house.
When interacting with a fearful cat, sit quietly nearby and let them investigate on their own terms. Avoid startingle them and avoid loud chores during the introduction period. Play soft music and use calming scents to make the environment more comforting. Talk softly and move slowly around the cat, avoid staring at them or approaching them directly, and try getting down to their level by kneeling or sitting on the floor.
Food can also be a positive bonding tool for cats, as feeding them at scheduled meal times can help them make positive associations with people.
How to cat proof a bed?
To protect your cat from potential harm, consider using a metal or wooden frame bed, a cat scratcher near your bed, or a cat bed in your room. Before bringing your new cat home, ensure she has a safe place to live, stowed breakables out of reach, and taken measures to prevent furniture from getting scratched and covered in cat hair. Cat-proof your house by storing breakables out of reach, securing furniture, and ensuring your cat’s safety. These tips will help protect your home from potential dangers and your cat from the mischievous new addition.

I love your make overs. They never disappoint! I would love to see still photos or a short article of your clients enjoying their spaces after you go tacked on to the end of your articles. For example, I would love to see the people you did the game room for having a party or game night and getting the friends’ reactions too. Your work is inspiring!! Thank you for all of your decorating tips.
I love this – and I also loved the other article where you featured the pet corner and claw-proof couch cover- it rocked – so cute. Just wanted to say (since you asked… my neighbor has a cat wheel for her bengal cat (Pacino) and he uses it like crazy – absolutely hilarious. She’s got like 6 cats and he won’t let the other cats use the wheel! Graham – WOW on that over-the-top coffee table – if you are not building doll houses etc you might consider it! You guys killed it! xoxox
not to be the bearer of bad news 😅 but those cats are highly unlikely to ever hang out in that room simply because cats like to be in places deemed ‘important’ – where their people spend most of their time and leave most of their scent (eg. your bed, couch, living room). That being said, Alexandra and team did a great job and it turned out to be a fun room
This article made me very happy. I love cats, though I have none at the moment. My apartment building has an extra security deposit for pets that I can’t afford right now, so I get my cat fix from a neighbor with two. Anyway, great job! And I have great respect for Graham for sacrificing his male dignity in the service of cat kind. Was he a cat in a previous life? 🐈💖💞😼
Ohh my gosh that coffee table is beyond adorable! And for wallpaper with dead fish on it, it’s surprisingly cute. Such an adorable makeover. So, my only issue with Ruggable rugs is if you get them any bigger than 5×7, they probably won’t fit in your washing machine (unless you have a pretty large washer), so you’ll have to bring it to a laundromat. As usual, great job Team AG!
The room turned out great, you did an amazing job as always! But are they trying to get rid of visitors or why did they choose to turn the guest room into a cat room (or do they have another guest room)? 🤣I wonder if the cats will actually use it, they usually tend to spend their time near their owners (and the room doesn’t have a window, they love to look outside).
Ugh, this “litter box” is absolutely not for cats. Size maybe for a guinea pig :/ cat needs litter box length 1,5 their own body length (obv no tail, buy from head to butt). The whatever that is is 1. not comfy and 2. not safe. Two cats = AT LEAST TWO LITTER BOXES, however ideal from behavioral point of view is number of cats +1. Cat gym is also not safe for cats their size, esp hammocks being not wide enough and rods being unsafe altogether :/ This is all for looks and none for usability and safety 🙁
Oooh, our experience was that Ruggables was not pet friendly. Our 15 year old cat got irritated nips from our Ruggable doormat, and I don’t think he ever really sat on it. The vet guessed straightaway what the issue was, so I think it’s fairly common. The fibers float away and irritated our boy enough that the doormat went away.
So we’re actually moving out of this cabin this coming week because it’s being sold. But I live in a little tiny one bedroom cabin. My son has the bedroom. I sleep in the living room/kitchen. But the redeeming factor in this cabin that makes it feel much bigger is it has an open ceiling with a metal roof sounds amazing in a rainstorm. My heat bill is something else but we won’t talk about that right now, but it has a series of open beams in the ceiling and my cat, climbs the 6 foot tall cat tree leaps onto the bathroom ceiling they built into this hundred year-old cabin and then leaps around the room on the beams. He looks like a big cat in a tree if you’ve ever seen a leopard lounging in a tree. We don’t let him outside because of safety. So this gives him plenty of activity. I’m bummed that he is not going to have this after this week.
I absolutely love this, knocked it out the park as per usual and you can really see how much Julia and John love their cats. I just have to say though, because it will bug me if i dont, please dont lift your cats under their front arms. They have shoulders that are more like our shoulder blades and they aren’t built to be pushed out but move forward and back, you can really hurt them lifting them like that. It sounds mean, but its better to get them by the scruff then scoop them from the butt and cradle them with their front paws on your forearm. I’m sorry for seeming like a moaning myrtle, I just love cats and want the best for them ❤
I don’t usually leave comments under youtube articles because most of the time I don’t understand why people want to give their opinion on everything. However, this article made me feel very uncomfortable. I watch all your articles, I like the “good-natured” spirit, I firmly believe that the quality of the home we live in can make us happier, that everyone deserves to have an interior in which they feel comfortable, safe, where they can rest and flourish. In many of your articles, we feel through the emotion of people that you manage to bring this, a possible way to improve their daily lives. There is a social and political aspect to doing this even if it is never claimed on your website. Once all that said… this article is for me perfectly the kind of content that completely depresses me: is this really the world we live in? the one where energy and money is put into making a room for cats for privileged people while so many other people don’t even have a roof over their heads? Of course you are not responsible for the poor housing and madness of this world but I much prefer when you allow students who live in a tiny box to live a little more decently thanks to your reorganization ideas. I am sorry for this comment but it had to be expressed and I hope that animal lovers do not fall on me. I am sure that they treat their cats very well without having to offer them a room or without being victims of animal commercialism. And also sorry for the imprecision of some sentences perhaps, English is not my mother tongue.
This was a different make over, for sure. I love cats and have them, so was nice to see all the cat options. Personally, I think the metal storage locker, should have been turned into the cat litter station. That little plant litter thing, is a bit small for 2 cats. I would not have an area rug either. When cats throw up, they always go to a rug vs the hard floor.
This is so adorable! 😭 Musette and Miley are so deserving 😊 Graham did an awesome job, especially with the homage to previous makeovers. So good! His cat name is Sawyer (for sawdust), Pearl (for the pearls) or Panda (for his trash panda, raccoon vibes). Congratulations on the new studio/office, well deserved team AG 🩷
i absoutly love this team, dont wanna sound like a hater im not, just think it was missing comfy beds, i have 9 cats and they loooove comfy beds and lots of scratchers.. So some cute beds and more sctratchers would have been better for me as i became a cat to 😹 .. And a place to eat and drink water? Meow! Graham wow and meow! 😺
This is not a critique of this website or Alexandra and I don’t know why the idea of a room for cats is like, quirky and cute but ok I can’t afford a room just for cats? It’s also that she’s promoting so much Sezane clothing like girl I wish I could afford Sezane sweaters damn. None of this is aspirational anymore it’s just fantasy.
Fantastic job – especially the coffee table, cat gym wall and the modifications to the sofa. I do wonder if they will use that litter box setup – some cats are quite particular. One thing: cats’ food and water should be as far away from the litter area as possible. I would love to see follow-up footage of the kitties hanging out and playing in their room. I’m sure they will love it there and so will their pet humans. 😻😸
If there’s plenty of scratching posts all throughout your home—both vertical and horizontal, made of different textures—Your cat shouldn’t be scratching up your sofas, folks! Promise. Invest in a sisal rug, AND ESPECIALLY “Cat Trees!” Anchored-to-the-wall Cat Trees, of course. 😺 Oh, and cat doors! Everywhere! Let ‘em go outside! Go outside with them, even! I have 6 cats…and, none of them have that typical “indoor-cat unwanted behavior.” 4 am zoomies!? Nah. No thanks. Ever since we gave our cats absolute free rein, the zoomies run like clockwork. OUTSIDE! And, mainly, in just the barn part of our barndominium—with a cat door outside to the free world. Definitely has cut down on the full-throttle-parkour-zoom-zooming in our dominium part of our home. 😹 Thankfully. LEARN YOUR CATS ROUTINES!😻 Making sisal poles is very easy!🤙🏻 And, remember, cats are very resilient!😽
thinking of how to adapt a design like this for my dog… I definitely need a portrait of her first. Not a cat mom, but I love the result. The colors are great, LOOOOOOVE that wallpaper, and the rug. And that custom coffee table is a work of art. Loved the gallery wall. I think the only thing that was missing from this was a cool lamp. I think Graham’s cat name should be Theodore (Teddy, for short. Teddy Graham.)
This definitely inspired me to be a better cat mom! But i must say i was dying for the nook in the back corner to be used for a climing of shelves to climb through, or a narrow tree to climb if the wall wasnt ideal to drill into! Perfect compartment for a kitty 😻 Amazing cat paradise nevertheless! AG&T in the GTA ftw!!
So much fun, and way better than the lifeless guest room (though, technically, they could have a pullout). Don’t I remember you doing a guest /cat room once, with repurposed drawers on the walls for the cats to jump /sleep in? Alexandra, it’s time for a cat update – when did you get another fur baby?! Why have we never met Boo? Nice rugs, and they may be washable, but who has a machine that they will fit into? The coffee table is the pinnacle of the entire reno. I would have laughed if you had filled out the cat gallery with team AG faces in the portraits, lol. Graham’s cat name could be MacGyver. The wall climbers are so great, I think I might have gone around the entire room with them.
My cat used an even larger wheel every day. It was at the cat shelter and no one else used it. I didn’t see any freestanding, solid scratching posts. These are often preferred to rope on trees. Cats go for couches to stretch their whole bodies. These mats may teach them to use the couch, instead of giving a better option. Many cats hate covered boxes. They want security and a view of who’s coming. The conventional wisdom is one box per cat, plus one. Just saying. A for effort.
We had a cat wheel! Our cat learned to run on it for treats, but eventually realized he could just spin it with his front paws while leaving his butt on the ground, and started using it when we were perusal movies, using the sound to hold us “hostage”. It was so cute when he would run on it, but we did decide not to replace it when it broke. 😀
Omg…this is just so incredible. Being a cat parent myself, I feel like i soooo need this, but in India, Mumbai houses are itself so small. But I loveeeeee this concept, this design, everything. Graham, you are so creative in your designs. Team AG, you guys rock, as always 🙂 (*Lots of Love from India)
Oh gosh Alexandra, this is such an adorble cat room, and they both seei to be enjoying it because of all the things they are looking at and climbing on and around. I also really love that coffee table with those cute houses and their names and the snuggly beds inside. Also loved seeing Graham dressed like a cute kitty. Gosh all of you are so incredible at all of thse makeovers on peoples houses and the rooms they want made better. Gosh if I was a millionare I would pay to have you all come to where I live and help with some DIYs that would make me so happy that I would cry with happiness at the awesome work that you all do. Thanks again for sharing another incredible article that was super fun to watch. Have a great rest of your weekend, sending love and hugs, bye!! 😊🥰😺😻😽💕💙💜💜💜
I look forward to your articles and seeing your beautiful fur babies. I just rescued 2 from Costa Rica. And now really need to enlarge my catio. Could you share how you enclosed a tree for your catios? I have a tree in mind for mine, but I am not sure how to accomplish this task. Also, did you do any barrier proofing digging down? We have snakes here (FL), so I want to create a safe extension. Thank you so much for sharing! I think it’s absolutely wonderful what you and your husband do for the kitties!!
This is easily the best one I’ve ever seen! Exactly what I had in mind for my yard. PS next time you do the roof, the screws with the done on top actually go on the top convex part rather than the bottom concave part. It seems weird since you have to use longer screws but thay way water doesn’t collect and go through the hole and rust the screw or leak through. Not too much of a problem with this design since you have grass and whatnot, especially if it doesn’t rain much there. Anyway, this is absolutely wonderful!!
We are planning to build a catio and would like the cats to enter it from a bedroom window, but haven’t figured out how they should go through the window into the catio. Any ideas? Do I need a cat door installed into the window? Also, do you sell your catio plans? You all did an amazing job on your catios. The best I’ve seen. Thank you!
This is pretty ideal for what I’d like to build for my cat. I live on a highway and my cat Tango was hit by a car on Saturday and we had to bury her. It was devastating. I have one cat left, he’s a kitten and I want to build a nice big enclosure for him so he can be outside and safely get exercise and enjoy nature.
