Sing with me Boys! Her telephone rang ’bout a quarter to nine She heard his voice on the other end of the line She wondered what was wrong this time She never knew what his calls might bring With a cowboy like him, it could be anything And she always expected the worst In the back of her mind He said, it’s cold out here and I’m all alone Didn’t make the short go again and I’m coming home I know I’ve been away too long I never got a chance to write or call And I know this rodeo has been hard on us all But I’ll be home soon And honey is there somethin’ wrong She said, don’t bother comin’ home By time you get here I’ll be long gone There’s somebody new and he sure ain’t no rodeo man He said, I’m sorry it’s come down to this There’s so much about you that I’m gonna miss But it’s alright baby If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne Gotta go now baby If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne He left that phone danglin’ off the hook Then slowly turned around and gave it one last look Then he just walked away He aimed his truck toward that Wyoming line With a little luck he could still get there in time And in that Cheyenne wind he could still hear her say She said, don’t bother comin’ home By time you get here I’ll be long gone There’s somebody new and he sure ain’t no rodeo man He said, I’m sorry it’s come down to this There’s so much about you that I’m gonna miss But it’s alright baby If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne Gotta go now baby If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne She never knew what his calls might bring With a cowboy like him, it could be anything And she always expected the worst In the back of her mind

The lyrics to this song are making sense in my head. If only a man can have a women that would support him on his dreams and looked up to him and be proud of the man he is. Sad that there’s women out there who will flat out leave a man for having dreams because they think they’re not but a barrier keeping them apart. 😞😞
11 months, and I still miss her. How you can hate someone so much and still miss them will always boggle me. However, things have turned around and are great now. Finally about to move and have a completely new life. Clean slate and new chapter. Just makes me wonder how much we must sacrifice to be great. I have feeling it’s everything, and everyone. God bless everyone in this comment section, and keep moving.
It’s a sad breakup song, but what makes this unique is how mature it is about it. They recognize their relationship can’t go on this way, and they part ways peacefully and respectfully. It’s still sad, but I feel that’s really important. Not that I don’t like the “done me wrong” stuff, but it’s refreshing to hear something sad but not vindictive and hollow.
Reading the comments on this song, chuckling to myself that people don’t know what or where Cheyenne is. Well, its where I live. In July and August we have the Cheyenne frontier days, aka, The Daddy of em all! Its a two week rodeo/carnival that also happens to be the only damned thing that happens in Cheyenne.
This is one bad ass song!! I’m a brown muffucka from southern San Diego and lived in Tucson AZ for the last 12 yrs. I found the country side of me there and it took king George to show me how bad ass country living is!! I love everybody on this page and Hope you all have wonderful lives!! God bless you all and viva MEXICO!!!
The song is about the life of a rodeo cowboy. The song begins with a phone call from a cowboy on the road to his love. He assures her that he is coming home. However, her tone alerts him that something is wrong. The chorus reveals that the woman has decided to leave him for another she feels is more reliable. The man replies that as much as this pains him, he will go on to Cheyenne, the most prestigious rodeo around. He was going to give up Cheyenne to be with her, one of the biggest sacrifices a cowboy could make, yet the moment he learned she had replaced him for another, he was quick to try to make Cheyenne. The cowboy does get to Cheyenne but it is revealed that when he does, it is his love that is still foremost on his mind. The song is about Lane Frost.
Wish i had heard this when i was coming back from Afghanistan in 2011 and my wife at the time was cheating on me and left me on base when i got home because she “was tired” i waited for 6 hours to get picked up. She sold my cars, took 140k out of my bank and left me for another man. It took years to learn what this song could have taught me in 5 min. Stay strong my friends, because a woman can only feel bad for herself, even when u give up everything for her.
People say that the song represents a peaceful way of parting ways. UNFORTUNATELY, they fail to realise that how much he is devastated by the end of the song when he repeats her lines in his mind. He’s away too but he didn’t find a new one for him. He’s alone too but he didn’t go to someone else’s arm for comfort. Things were hard for him too but he finds a home in her. BUT, she didn’t feel that way and it hurts him. Leaving the phone hanging without reacting much and then moving on repeating her final lines signifies much deeper pain than “peacefully parting ways”.

one weekend in alabama after conducting a parachute Jump in gadsden for the 20th sfg, I still had adrenaline pumping in my veins. there was some alabamians talking trash about Texas and how us all Texans know how to ride bulls. Now I ain’t never been on no bull in my life, but I be dam if i was gonna let Texas down. I was scared as hell as I climbed on the back of that beast, and I grabbed on to that rope like I was trying to start a lawnmower. When that gate opened up I may have only lasted 4-5 seconds before getting to feel what it’s like being a chihuahua being body slammed by a pitbull. To make matters worse I ended up in the ER the next morning where a male nurse was trying to hit on me as I got a shot on my buttocks. 😊😊😊 Go Texas!!!!!
Met this lady shes 2 hours away I didn’t have the mental capacity to drive to her house she told me she loved me so many times oneday she said I’ve got a friend coming over I said is it a man feeling sick in the stomach. She never answered her name was Heather later on I said did you sleep with him she said yes I can only sleep with someone if I have feelings for them been crying for 2 days now how I wish I was the only one in her life💔
I rode in the circuit for 5 years and never made it big time my wife now was my girl friend and she told me she was afraid that the bulls would kill me that was at the er when I came to the bull broke all my ribs on my right side so I quit for a while now I ride at lil rodeos that come to town it’s fun and scary at the same time
loveyou597, well, from a man’s perspective, he’s wanting to go to the rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It’s one of the biggies. From his woman’s perspective, she’s worried about him breaking hisself up into pieces, and she’s lonesome and wants him with her. From my perspective, their both self centered, but he’s got a dream he’s pursuing while he’s young and able while she’s just wanting him to be what she wants him to be, not caring about his dreams. He made the best decision and she moved on.
As a child I remember this song playing on the truck radio with my dad while running a farm. I had forgotten about the song. I heard it today for the first time since the 80’s. I just figured out the meaning of the song I had not heard since I was a little girl myself. Brought tears to my eyes. Great job Tanya and also the person that wrote the song. In 2023 there are good men out here doing the right thing by their children. I’m sure they would love a prayer sent their way. Tough times are upon us. Good hearted people will get us headed back in the right direction. Keep your 👀 on The I AM.

My long time girlfriend left me 3 days ago and this was the first song I turned to. I picked up two extra jobs on top of my full time. She fell ill and so I did this so she can stop worrying about working. I got these jobs to be able to afford her medicine and appointments, but it wasn’t enough. Working too much caused me to stop being as attentive to her because I was so tired at the end of the days and I lost sight of the more important things about our relationship.
I thumbed down here but let me explain why. It’s not the song. The song gets a thousand thumps up! It’s the article. Ummmmm……always expected the worse???? Are you freaking kidding me???!!!! If you’re going to write out the lyrics to ANY SONG do yourself a favor and get them right. And that’s doubly true if it’s as iconic as this one! FYI it’s “always expected the WORST in the back of her mind. Hell the definition for worse and worst aren’t even the same! Bad is….well just bad. If the situation continues to decline it had gotten worse. And if it’s gotten as bad as it possibly can well it’s the worst.
