Can I Paint An External Door With Chalk Paint?

Chalk paint is a versatile and durable paint suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It can be used on exterior doors, but it may not be as weather-resistant as regular outdoor paint. However, with proper protection, it can be used to paint a front door, creating an inviting entrance to a home.

Chalk paint is easy to use and requires little prep work. With a little patience and attention to detail, you can transform your door into a beautiful and unique statement piece. It can be used for various projects, such as shutters, doors, porch floors, staining concrete, painting barns, outdoor furniture, swingsets, birdhouses, concrete benches, mailbox posts, and more.

A chalk painted front door makes an inviting entrance to a home and can be applied to any wood, plastic, or metal door. It comes in many beautiful color shades, but the colors may appear lighter outside depending on the incidence of light. Chalk paint is perfect for masonry and does not require a sealer out of doors. Annie Sloan Lacquer is a great outdoor sealer for doors.

As you probably know I love using chalkpaint but this is my first time using it on a door of any kind, much less an exterior door.

Is Chalk Paint outdoor safe?

Chalk Paint® Lacquer is a water-based polyacrylic varnish that is ideal for outdoor use due to its durability and UV protection. It is best for small, firmly upholstered items made from natural fabric like cotton or linen. To apply Chalk Paint®, it can be diluted with water and painted on as a ‘wash’, staining the fibers without the need for waxing. The success of painting upholstery depends on factors such as fabric condition, color composition, firmly upholstered piece, and the color used. It is generally better to paint from light to dark than from dark to light.

Will Chalk Paint wash off outside?

Chalk Paint™ is a versatile paint that can be used outdoors, but it is important to avoid sanding and remove old peeling paint or rust. Rust may show through, so it is best to tackle it head-on. Wipe away cobwebs or dirt and open the Chalk Paint™ tin.

Chalk Paint® Lacquer is the best defense against UV rays, fading paint color, and peeling paint caused by water damage. It is recommended to apply two thin coats or more of Lacquer to ensure the entire piece is fully protected. The curing time for maximum protection occurs over 14 days.

To ensure the paint is not sanded, check the weather forecast as rain can wash away the paint and compromise the lacquer if it hasn’t dried sufficiently before being exposed to water. Chalk Paint™ Wax should not be used outdoors.

Playing with bright colors is easier outdoors, so be bold and use two coats of Lacquer to ensure the entire piece is fully protected.

What paint finish is best for outside door?

Semi-gloss paint is the best choice for exterior doors due to its enhanced durability, better surface imperfections masking, and easier cleaning. It is also more cost-effective than flat or eggshell finishes. Exterior paint may have specific features designed to address specific needs, such as fade resistance and mold/mildew resistance. Most homeowners can benefit from using fade- or UV-resistant paint on west- or east-facing doors, as they are exposed to the most sunlight.

For areas with high precipitation and humidity, it is crucial to look for paint that protects against mold and mildew. Understanding these features is essential for the longevity and performance of the paint.

Is chalk paint waterproof?

Chalk paint, a finish inspired by vintage styles, can be applied to a variety of surfaces; however, it may not be the most durable option. The application of a sealant can enhance the durability and resilience of the surface, rendering it more resistant to the effects of moisture, scratching, and abrasion.

Do I need to prime my front door before painting?

To protect your home from bugs and debris, you can paint your storm or glass door in place or remove it from the hinges. If you prefer to paint, you can tape a tarp over the opening. Before painting, prime the door and remove all hardware. Clean the door with a wet rag and use a sander or sandpaper to remove any imperfections. Apply primer and cover the door completely, using a roller or paintbrush.

Once dry, apply paint to trim work or details using a low-nap or foam roller or a paintbrush. For a “hand-painted” look, use a paintbrush for the final coat. Allow the door to dry completely before reattaching the hardware and rehanging it if you removed it to paint.

Does Chalk Paint hold up to outside weather?

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® is an affordable and eco-friendly paint that can be used to freshen up garden furniture, fences, plant pots, sheds, and even walls. To use it, wipe down the furniture to remove cobwebs, dirt, and dust. If the furniture is rusted or has old paint peeling, remove it before re-painting. Rust and old paint will eventually flake off, causing the new paint job to take them with them. Sanding outdoor furniture is unnecessary unless it’s a shiny surface like plastic garden furniture.

No prep or prime is needed for outdoor furniture. After cleaning, apply the desired Chalk Paint® color using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® Brushes for a textured finish or Flat Brushes for a smooth, contemporary finish. Allow the furniture to dry for at least 2-3 hours.

  • Hi Jenni! Great tips! I have one question for you. What would your prep have been if your door wasn’t in the best condition to start with? For example, our front door had been previously painted black with some unappealing drips and brush strokes that are pretty glaring when the light shines on it. What would be the best way to deal with that up front in order to get a super smooth finish when I repaint it? Thank you!

  • We are getting ready to repaint our front door. Living in Southeast Florida, with our house facing due east, the sun really beats down on it. It’s a metal door so it gets very hot. Do you think the Dixie Bell paint and gator hide can withstand the very hot temperatures or would you recommend another type of paint and sealer? TFS. Hugs from Florida 🌴😎💙😎🌴
