Difficulty in rusting drywall screws is a common issue, especially when used outdoors due to unpredictable factors like rain, humidity, and atmospheric moisture. To prevent this, it is recommended to use exterior-grade, self-tapping pancake screws or deck screws as long as they are drilled through the vinyl without pre-punched nail holes.
Drywall screws have a coating to resist rust, but they can be damaged if driven through harder plastic. To avoid this, use spray adhesive and drywall screws, then mud over them. If the flashing is not corner bead, remove it and patch the hole. Replace the flashing and parts as needed, fill all old holes with a screw and washer, and apply a generous coat of Henry’s on the entire area.
Start by installing a metal or vinyl base flashing directly to the wall sheathing using roofing nails. When more than one flashing is installed, do not nail the pieces to the vertical wall. Drywall screws have a coating to resist rust, but if you drove them through the harder plastic, the coating may be damaged.
Stainless deck screws can also be used, but they may not go through drywall paper as well as drywall screws. It is important to follow the correct installation process and use the appropriate type of screws for the job.
