Hardiflex is a durable and weather-resistant material that can be used for both internal and external walls in timber framed buildings. It is more durable and less likely to be damaged by moisture than plywood. HardieFlex can be painted to match your desired color scheme, using high-quality exterior paint and following the manufacturer’s recommendations.
HardieFlex is suitable for all forms of external cladding, including ground level and upper storey extensions, gable ends, and feature walls. It is best suited for mid- and high-rise residential projects. The HardieFlex® NexGen ™ fiber cement board sample passed 25 cycles of Heat-Rain Performance Test in accordance with ISO 8336-2017 by TUV-SUB Singapore.
HardieFlex sheets have square edges and come in two thicknesses, 4.5mm and 6mm, and in a variety of lengths that can be easily trimmed to length on-site. They can be used for internal walls in residential applications and can also be used for other purposes.
Cement board for an exterior wall offers durability and the added convenience of painting on-site. HardieFlex cladding is made of a mixture of wood pulp and cement, making it a versatile and long-lasting siding material. Hardie Board and metal are both long-lasting, durable siding materials that are highly customizable for your home’s exterior.

How long will cement board last outside?
Fiber cement siding is a durable and cost-effective option for homeowners, with an average lifespan of around 50 years. It comes in various colors and styles and doesn’t require significant maintenance. The cost of installation depends on the type of siding and the value of professional installation. Fiber cement siding can enhance curb appeal and provide a return on investment at a reasonable cost. Its composition of cement, wood fiber, and sand makes it a good candidate for recycling, as disposing of materials at a landfill poses no environmental hazards.
Does Hardie board get damaged when wet?
Hardie® fiber cement siding has been certified as flood-resistant by FEMA and is rated for use in High Velocity Hurricane Zones by Miami-Dade County Florida, among the nation’s most stringent extreme weather regulations. This siding material is a first line of defense against water and weather damage, such as hurricanes, flood waters, tropical storms, and storm surges. Hardie® fiber cement saw no visible signs of swelling in thickness through seven days of extreme water saturation, and is warranted to not crack, split, warp, or edge check due to damage from water, heat, and freezing temperatures when tested in accordance with ASTM C1185.
Is Hardiflex a wood or cement?
Fiber cement board, also known as hardiflex, is a popular partition wall material compared to concrete hollow blocks. Fiber cement walls offer several advantages over concrete walls, including better thermal insulation, better sound proofing, and lighter weight. The hollow gap between the two fiber cement boards allows heat to be cut by the air inside the metal furring supports, which can also cause sound to reverberate and transfer to other rooms. Insulating materials like egg trays, wool, or aluminum foil can be used to dampen the heat and weaken sound reverberation.
However, concrete walls still have advantages in sound dampening, as sound is almost completely absorbed by the aggregate materials in the concrete mix and hollow blocks in concrete hollow blocks. This allows for better hearing, as fiber cement walls absorb more sounds than concrete walls.
Furthermore, fiber cement boards are lighter than concrete, making the build lighter and less stress on floor beams. This makes fiber cement walls a more cost-effective option for homeowners who cannot afford concrete hollow blocks. Overall, fiber cement boards offer several advantages over concrete walls, including better thermal insulation, lighter weight, and better sound dampening.
Will Hardie board hold up outside?
Hardie® products are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including hurricanes, rainstorms, strong winds, extreme heat, UV rays, humidity, snow, hail, and freezing temperatures. They are resistant to pests and termites, unlike engineered wood and natural wood siding. Hardie® siding offers better color and longer lifespan with proprietary ColorPlus® Technology finishes, which create a strong bond that resists peeling, chipping, and cracking over time.
Should exterior walls be 2×4 or 2×6?
2×6 vs. 2×4 wall framing is generally suitable for small garages and sheds, as it is code compliant when bearing wall heights do not exceed 10 ft. Medeek Design typically specifies 2 x 4 studs @ 16″ o. c. spacing for small sheds and garages with building widths less than 16 feet. Larger structures are called out with 2 x 6 exterior studs @ 16″ o. c. unless otherwise specified. This type of framing is considered “conventional light framing” and is in prescriptive compliance with the building code.
Using 2 x 6 framing can increase the structural strength of the building significantly, with a significant difference in compressive strength, resistance to buckling, and lateral deflection. Additionally, 2 x 6 walls provide more space for insulation, resulting in less heat loss and smaller cooling and heating costs. Walls are also less drafty, improving the overall comfort level of the living space. Additionally, more space is available for utilities within framing, resulting in thicker walls with better soundproofing and less outside noise.
How thick should an exterior wall be?
The thickness of exterior residential walls using ICFs depends on factors like the building’s design and location. Standard ICF walls require six inches of concrete, while areas susceptible to high winds require at least 8 inches. Engineering tables review these factors to determine the concrete core size and rebar layout. ICF reinforced concrete walls are superior to wood framed walls as shear walls.
How thick is HardieFlex for exterior wall?
The minimum thickness for HardieFlex® sheets is 6. 0mm, with optional thicknesses of 9. 0mm and 12. 0mm. The thickness of the material is dependent upon the dimensions and weight of the tile in question.
How long does Hardie board last outside?
James Hardie fiber cement siding, when properly maintained, has the potential to exceed the 30-year warranty period, potentially extending its lifespan to up to 50 years. Stateline Exteriors, a reputable Kansas City siding contractor, can provide a complimentary estimate and offer guidance to homeowners throughout the selection process.
Do you have to paint HardiFlex?
In order to satisfy the durability requirements set forth by NZBC and the product warranties, it is imperative that Hardie™ Flex Sheets be completely dry and free from any residual dirt prior to the application of paint. Furthermore, the coating process itself must be completed within a three-month period following the installation of the sheets.

Thanks for the article I am building here in the province and have used lahat Hardiflex NexGen 12mm outside, 9mm inside exterior wall, 6 mm inside partitions and 4.5 mm ceiling. 4.5 is not specific to residential but the application of use for weight. Also need 9mm or greater for wet areas depending sa tile size Feel free to reach out if you want my experience so far. Also please never use rivets on hardiflex use proper screws for the application
Ficem boards are good for walls and ceilings as long as you provide a gap between their joints because it expands due to weather. Joining the board without any gap will only show hairline cracks on the ceiling or walls in the long run due to board expansion kahit lagyan mo pa ng masilya. Mas maayos gamitin ang gypsum boards on indoor ceiling and walls.

Hello! I am going to build a tiny shed/house within our old home’s garage… for me to stay in while visiting and slowly renovating the interiors of our old house. I have used Fiberboard in my DIY outside kitchen. Can I use 2x4x8KD and 2x2x8KD as framing instead of metal coz I am good at DIY wood projects. How to ensure that it is secured? Screws or Nails? Pls advise. Thanks! 😊
Mayroon po akong dirty kitchen na ang first roof is polycarbonate but since it trapped heat, pinalagyan ko ng colorroof on top of it bali another construction na po iyon. But since di na din po maganda ang polycarbonate like marumi na po tingnan dahil wala pang ceiling under it, pede din po bang gumamit ng hardiflex for its ceiling? Is it heatproof (hardiflex) po ba kasi nasa gitna na ang polycarbonate roof ko in case maglalagay ako ng ceiling na hardiflex ang material. Or what can u recommend for my dirty kitchen ceiling? thank u po.
