Should my desk be in front of a window?
Office desks should not be placed in front of windows for extended periods due to health and well-being reasons. This can cause eye strain, distractions, and damage to the desk and electronics. However, for shorter periods, desks in front of windows can provide Feng Shui benefits such as fresh air and creative inspiration. Think Office Furniture offers high-quality desks for offices and reception areas in various shapes, colors, and finishes to meet the needs of businesses across the UK.
Which way should a desk face in a home office?
In a corporate or home office, it is auspicious to sit facing the door to ensure easy access to potential clients. However, the desk should be as far away from the door as possible for protection and power. Keep a live plant or lush flowers on the desk for growth and good luck, while a bowl of black onyx stones can bring good luck and stability to health and emotions. Keep one or two special items on the desk to attract and protect wealth, focusing on the top left corner with a green plant, citrine crystals, or a flowing water feature.
How should home office be arranged?
Home offices are often limited in space, so it’s crucial to use it efficiently. Hang floating shelves on walls to keep papers and office equipment off the desk, and use vertical file folders on the desk to keep important papers within reach. An office that reflects the design and comfort of your home is a place you’ll want to burn the midnight oil. Avoid squishing a tiny desk into a windowless closet to preserve a rarely-used guest room.
Consider traffic flow and your ability to withstand distractions. If clients will be visiting, a private space with ample seating is a must. Remember, your home office should reflect the design and comfort of your home, not just a small space.
What are the five types of office layout?
Office layouts play a crucial role in a company’s success, impacting the quality of work and employee satisfaction. There are various types of office layouts, including open-plan, low partition, team-based, and hybrid. Open-plan layouts are ideal for startups and established businesses, while low partition layouts are suitable for startups and established businesses. Team-based layouts are ideal for teams, while hybrid office layouts are suitable for hybrid offices. Choosing the right office layout depends on the company’s needs and goals, as it can significantly impact the overall productivity and employee satisfaction.
Where to position a desk in a home office?
A desk view can enhance the work environment and make it feel less limited. Positioning the desk against a window, whether it’s an L-shaped or straight desk, can provide a more peaceful workspace. This location allows you to take a mental break from work and enjoy the sunlight, which can improve your mood and contribute to a more pleasant work atmosphere. While walking outside may not always be possible, having a desk next to a window allows you to view the world outside and absorb sunlight, resulting in a more enjoyable and peaceful working atmosphere. Regular sun exposure can also provide additional benefits.
How to design an office layout?
A good office layout involves considering various workstations and seating arrangements, prioritizing ergonomics, staying on-brand, choosing the right color scheme, ensuring natural lighting, adding plants, using moveable furniture, and providing storage space. As a business owner, it’s crucial to adapt the office space to employees and create a comfortable and enjoyable working environment. A good office design can significantly improve team morale, contribute to a more innovative workplace, and improve the mental and physical health of employees. Whether planning an office refresh for 2023 or moving into a new space, understanding how to plan a good office layout is essential.
How to tidy up a home office?
Maintain a clean and organized office by regularly tidying up your workspace. Place items back in their designated spots, put pens in holders, file papers, and return binders to bookshelves. Wipe down your desk with a disinfectant wipe to keep germs at bay. If you work in an office environment with coworkers, hiring professional janitorial cleaning services can help keep the entire facility organized and promote better productivity. They can create a customized cleaning schedule that meets your office’s needs and schedule. Additionally, it’s important to consider the risk of sick building syndrome in your office.
How do I create a minimalist home office?
Minimalist home office design is a minimalist style that promotes simplicity and improves work performance. It involves a clean aesthetic, choosing colors, opting for clean storage solutions, creating a lighting plan, keeping the office green, and creating room for personal decor. This design style is perfect for home offices, as it offers numerous benefits that enhance work performance. Interior designers often use minimalist design and experience its daily benefits.
To create a minimalist home office, it is essential to understand your needs and goals, select an ideal location, declutter and simplify, choose colors, opt for clean storage solutions, create a lighting plan, keep the office green, and make room for personal decor. Top minimalist furniture and accessory brands are also available.
📹 How To Organize Your Workspace Beyond Decluttering | Home Office Organization
This video is part 3 of my home office series, where I’ll be going through the process of organizing and a few storage solutions.
I’ve tried to declutter since forever, but every source I found was beating around the bush and was talking about concepts instead of getting to the point. You did a marvelous job combining those concepts with an actual representation of that process on a computer desk environment, the exact thing I need to declutter. Thank you!
Hey, just wanted to say I’m glad I found your article, its going to help me reorganize my room a lot! I still work away from home at a warehouse, but I have not yet finished my degree, so I need a clean work flow for a clean mind when I’m home learning. Also wanted to say you have great cinematography and article skills. I wish you more success this year, keep up the good work
This is an outstanding office organization article. I was so impressed with the concept that you are a designer so you designed how your office should function and look – you are giving me lots of ideas as I am currently in the process of re-designing my home office. Unfortunately I’m in the stage of it looks worse before it looks better…….. I also love that you were organizing real office materials and not just “decorating” your office. So many articles are about “decorating” a home office which is nice but I wanted ideas on how to store my reference materials and work tools. Your article clearly and concisely showed how and why you placed the items in the way you did. Great job !!!
Seeing all that expensive camera equipment then you spraying lens cleaner directly down onto a lens made me wince! Nice guide though, somewhat gone through sa similar process although need to tackle digitising of documents and purging filing cabinet contents. Then some drawers that have definitely become dumping grounds.
Wow man, you have the cleanest life ! I am really interested to know how you become that kind of person. I am struggling with the things i supossed to do. I woult say that, “coach” us please, because i thing the way you live is the most productive and succesful. I wish I had the consistency not to procrastinate again and feel bad for not being productive. I think im so impatient Please make a article youre helping a lot! Regards from Peru!
Only one critique. Put the naked HDDs in some sort of padded carrier; something with vibration dampening and to prevent them from banging together every time you open the drawer. While the banging isn’t going to be the thing that kills them as they’re not on, it’s not good for HDDs either. Other than that, amazing article. I’ll certainly be integrating some points into my daily life.
This article is so soothing for me. I was so stressed out about making my bedroom a more work friendly space but this makes it feel like just a series of small achievements. But I did get distracted by that huge count down. What could possibly be happening in 15135 days from now? 14973 days from now I think?
I’m wondering if you can share some additional info. What is the distance from the floor, to the bottom of that IKEA cabinet above? I’m only 5’8″, but I have longer legs and a shorter torso. What is the finished height of your desk there? Getting a desk low that fits me puts me in the UPLIFT Commercial C Frame for a low 24″, but that crossbar is annoying. The crossbar gets in the way and you cannot roll a short file cabinet underneath, without it sticking out. Thank you again.
OK, I just looked around at my desk space and felt it was a disaster so I googled organizing a workspace and found this article. I am now a new subscriber and have saved this to my favorites. So much of what he says rings true. Inspired is what I feel, I hope to design my space to be as functional, flowing and efficient as yours is here. Awesome article! Thank you!
I have watched a lot of these organization and setup articles however I really enjoyed this one: the one thing that really stands out (to me) in this article is: when you took a photo and used your iPad to sketch in your ideas! Man seriously- what a genius but simple idea!!! That at least I have not seen before!! I am definitely going to be trying out your approach. Great article! 👍🏻
Excellent article. I have seen a few other articles but they all center around organizing a few office supplies, paper files, and arts and crafts supplies. I needed to see an organizing article like this one where it involves the life of someone that works with equipment as well as with office materials. I will need to adapt the principals to my own needs but at least I have a better starting point of reference. I’m in the IT field so my desk top is occupied with at least 40% equipment most of the time and as much as 75% depending on additional projects. Most of this equipment are laptops and a few tablets because I need to test my software deployment packages and PC image projects for compatibility on various PC models. All of these laptops in my small space leave little elbow room for writing and other things. At the end of the day, I don’t like looking back at my nice new desk which now looks like NASA’s central command station.
Hey !! Thank you so much for this organisation system and the formula behind it. But I have very small home office and the storage space. I don’t have any unnecessary items or nothing to declutter. Still basic needs are problem to store. I’m a graphic designer. In my tiny apartment I can afford only 18 inches X 29 inches work desk and a wall behind it. Please suggest something on this. By the way the description box is very informative. Thanks and XOXO, Sreeparna
Hi Matthew Encina, I love your desk setup. I’m try to follow your desk setup. But, I have problem with my type c thunderbolt conector. Now, i’m use lenovo T470 with intel i5 series and support for thunderbolt. But, i try to connect with thunderbolt conector to monitor, mouse and, keyboard. But, that’s not working for mouse and keyboard. Are you have idea for my issue?thanks and appreciate for your idea.
Great article. New Subscriber. Have you found that certain systems that you put in place didn’t work initially? If so how long did it take you to get it spot on? I love your concepts however I am forever needing to change because it doesn’t become easy. I would like to get my home office sorted during lockdown because I waste so much time changing systems and finding they don’t work either. Any words from the wise appreciated sure hope we can get through this situation in NSW and Victoria in the next month, but in the meantime I feel it’s time we’ll spent getting systems in place. Take care 🙂
Hi Reynard, I really like your new office!!! The colour scheme is calm, stylish n elegant. I like the two desks for doing different things, I have the same in my office, too. You made your home very peaceful n comfortable. Question: how do you declutter? What to keep n what not to? What is the simple principle behind it? I have a thousand books, some in a set, expensive!! I see that you dont have too many books but I believe that you read lots too!!! How do you decide which to keep? Thanks for the article!! 🙂
Hi Reynard ! Your website is by far my favourite for home décor inspiration, so thank you for putting out great content. Would you consider creating an in-depth article dedicated to lighting ? I love the warm, cozy atmosphere you have created in your home, and am trying to achieve similar results in my rental apartment. The seemingly endless choices of lighting fixtures can be overwhelming, and without an interior design background, it can be really hard to pick the best option for a space. I want to know how and why you choose the lamps you did, and how you decided where to position them. Cheers, Alexandra
