Dorothy Raley, editor of A Century of Progress Homes and Furnishings, discusses the construction of houses for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair to showcase modern architectural design, experimental materials, and new technologies. The houses were built to demonstrate modern architectural design, experimental materials, and new technologies. In 1976, the Century of Progress properties were included as a district within the Indiana Dunes National Park. The National Park Service (NPS) purchased the Wieboldt-Rostone House outright and acquired the other four residences under its Reservation of Use.
The houses at the Chicago Fair exemplify the modern spirit in room arrangement, architecture, landscaping, decoration, and overall design. The first edition of this book, published in 1934, is a rare artifact with rubbing and surface wear, and is an ex library with a pocket in the back. The book introduces many of America’s great streamline designers to the public for the first time.
The five historic Century of Progress Homes are available for tours as part of the Indiana Dunes National Park. The houses were built for the fair to demonstrate modern architectural design, experimental materials, and new technologies. The book is an important and lavishly produced survey of postwar California domestic architecture, written by Frank Lloyd Wright-trained California architect Herbert.
