In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble discovered that the Andromeda galaxy was an “island universe” beyond our Milky Way galaxy. This list of known galaxies within 3.8 megaparsecs (12.4 million light-years) of the Solar System includes about 50 major Local Group galaxies and some members of neighboring galaxy groups, such as the M81 Group and the Small Magellanic Cloud. The spiral-shaped Milky Way galaxy is enormous and consists of 100 to 400 billion stars, including the Sun. The closest galaxies to Earth include Andromeda, Segue 1, and Sagittarius.
Research presented at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Beijing in 2012 found the first group of galaxies that are just like ours, a rare solar system. The MicroFUN survey has discovered only one solar system like our own in the last four years, with two gas giants resembling Jupiter and a solar system much like ours. Astronomers have found more than 4,000 exoplanets, worlds orbiting distant stars in our Milky Way galaxy, many of which reside in planetary systems vastly different from ours.
Our home galaxy is called the Milky Way, a spiral galaxy with a disk of stars spanning over 100,000 light-years.
