How do I find a door that fits?

To measure the door width, take three measurements inside the door frame at the top, middle, and bottom. The width determines the door’s size, with standard UK widths being 24 inches/610 mm, 27 inches/686 mm, 30 inches/762 mm, and 33 inches/838 mm. To measure the door height, measure the inside of each vertical side of the frame, with the longest length being the required height. Allow for floor covering and use a tape measure to measure the longest length from the top corner to the bottom corner on each side. If standing on a chair, it may be helpful to have a family member or friend help. The standard UK height of doors is 6’6″/1981mm, but some may be 2040mm.

How do you resize an exterior door?

The door resizing process involves removing the door from its hinges, placing it on a stable surface, and measuring the amount needed to cut from the bottom of the door. A track saw or circular saw with a track is used to cut along the marked line. This process is crucial if the door doesn’t fit the frame, scrapes across the floor, or gets stuck on the carpet. Old House expert contractor Tom Silva helps homeowners resize doors that are hitting carpets without removing the entire door frame or destroying existing trim. Resizing your door is necessary for various reasons, most of which involve changes in your home’s structure or foundation.

Can you cut an exterior door to fit?

When ordering a shorter prehung exterior door, it is typically easiest to order from a lumberyard. However, it is possible to shorten the unit yourself, typically allowing wood doors to be trimmed by 1⁄2 in. at the top and 1-1⁄2 in. at the bottom. To do this, disassemble the unit, remove the door from its frame, place it on a surface that won’t scratch the door, and remove the door-bottom weatherstripping.

Mark the cut on each edge of the door and clamp a shooting board to the door, positioning the clamps with their long ends down to avoid interference with the saw. Place a block under each clamp to protect the other side of the door.

Can you get doors cut to size?

Trimming down interior doors, including hollow core doors, is possible and often necessary to achieve the desired fit. While there is no standard legislation for door size, many brands adhere to a set of common sizes. It is crucial to take precise measurements and purchase a door that is as close to true as possible. Minor adjustments may be necessary due to varying frames, rough openings, and floor coverings. While it is possible to shorten a new door to fit into an old frame, it is important not to cut away too much material.

If your frame is close to standard, it may be easier to buy a pre-finished door and trim the sides, top, and bottom down to fit perfectly. The parts need to be touched up with the same stain or paint color, but the project is relatively easy.

Can doors be cut to size?

Laminate doors can be trimmed to prevent splintering or cracking, but only up to 5mm is recommended to prevent damage. To seal a door after cutting, it is essential to finish it with oil, stains, varnish, or paints. Oils come in clear, matt, or satin finishes, while finishes include dark, medium, light, and clear shades. Stains or varnish come in a variety of colors, while paints come in a gloss or matt finish. Finishing the door not only adds a protective layer, but also prevents moisture from seeping into the door and prolongs wear and tear.

Can you special order door sizes?

Entry doors are typically manufactured to comply with industry-wide standard exterior door sizes. However, special orders are available for sizes that exceed these standard dimensions. It is of the utmost importance to have a clear understanding of the rough opening, which encompasses both the frame and the slab, in order to select the most appropriate size.

Are custom doors expensive?

Can you buy a door to fit a frame?

Replacing a door in an old frame is possible as long as the door frame is in good condition and the new door panel is the same size as the old one. However, there are five signs that indicate the whole door needs to be replaced: rotten wood, cracks/splits, warping, dents, and deep scratches. While replacing just the door may seem more cost-effective, it is crucial for your family’s safety and efficiency, so replacing the entire door is generally the best option.

How to measure an exterior door for replacement?

To measure your front door, follow these steps: measure the door panel from one side to the other, the door height from the top to the bottom, the door thickness and door jamb width, and the door thickness by measuring the door edge. There are various options for replacing front entry doors, including keeping the current configuration with an updated panel or completely changing the door design. If you’re a DIY pro, you can buy a new fiberglass front door online and have it shipped to your home. If you’re not ready to tackle a DIY project, schedule an in-home consultation with a Pella replacement expert who will handle everything from finding the right products to delivery and installation.

Will a 30 in door fit in a 32 in opening?

Will a 30 in door fit in a 32 in opening?

To properly frame a door rough opening, add 2 inches to the width of the door and frame, resulting in a 32-inch wide opening. This is because the opening needs to be larger than the door and frame for three reasons: 1) to allow room to adjust the door and frame, as not all rough openings are completely plumb and square; 2) to account for the varying sizes of doors by manufacturer; and 3) to allow for expansion and contraction of the wall as it gets bigger and smaller as the seasons change. This allows for a more precise installation and ensures proper plumbing, leveling, and squareness of the door installation.

  • Door…Absolutely stunning door. Loved everything about it and the article. Thanks for including the door installation in the article. Can you tell me what type glass you used in the door? I noticed it wasn’t clear glass, but was curious what type of glass. Thanks in advanced for responding to my question.

  • For 1.5x the cost of my company’s work in California, and it still has a ugly 2 part arch inside. Everything; sanded/stained/urathaned solid wood, x Min fire rated steel, or aluminum door & frame, with electrified hardware, x Min fire rated glass, mckinley heavy duty hinges, schlage hardware, or any other preferences the clients may have. Then again, our wood is free. 😉

  • Wow that took me back to when I worked on such things. I rebuilt the windows to a public building in Kingston which all had curved headers and I built them exactly the same way. You did a super job. Nice to see you had the man power to handle it. All too often help can be sorely lacking. Excellent job guys.

  • EDIT: It is a fantastic door. I am just pointing out a security flaw. Molding on the outside… sounds like a great opportunity for a skilled burglar to breach the home. Yes officer, my $23K door was the entry point; the attacker removed the molding on the outside, removed the sidelight, reached his hand in and unlocked the door, then buttoned it all back up… yes, it looks like it didn’t happen.

  • I like the joinery but hate the concept. Maple for an external door is a no-no. It will get all punky and spalted relatively quickly. Hell, you sneeze on maple and it will begin to rot. Maple is horrible at taking a stain as your results show. Oak or fir would have been a much better choice of wood. Maple is a magnificent wood when you allow the figure to be the star like curly maple or tiger maple. Your door has chaotic smatterings of all the different types of figure which no amount of stain will cover or unify. Now, had you used quatersawn maple for the rails and curly or tiger or OMG birdseye maple for the panels then THAT would have been a 23 grand door.

  • So you built an arch top door, installed it, and got paid, but it would mean a lot to you if we subscribed? You need to be validated? You are good enough, smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like you. The old door matched well with the exterior, too bad you cant re-install it and just re-paint it.

  • Charlie… Door… whatever. I agree with those who observe there’s not much in the way of door building or even installation here. Would be more aptly titled “several guys move heavy door frames around”. It would be interesting to see how you chose the wood, how you took on-site measurements, how you made the door, how long it took, why it costs $23k (dang), etc.

  • DOOR. Awesome door and the 9ft frame wow which basketball player lives in that house 🏠. Only problem with the door is the glass windows having the beading on the outside, here in the UK that process was band years ago because of scumbags that break into houses would have removed the beading and used it as a easy entry into people’s home’s. It became the way for insurance companies to argue and ultimately not payout the homeowners if they got broken into!!!

  • Hey guys I would really like to buy your high temp resin It appears my table requires 10-15 litres of resin to finish off at 1/4″ thick coating. I see it’s almost half a grand for that amount. I was in your store earlier to buy it although the gentlemen behind the counter who appeared to be training a young man on how to work the till was not very interested in helping me out, and I could not get the information I need to make a purchase of that magnitude.

  • Door and what a door too. Great work you Guys as always. $23,000! That is a bargain when you see the amount of work involved in construction and installation, not to mention the initial cost of the timber. Plus the big installation crew required and Brads work the day before. Oil finish is the go. I know it is no concern of yours but did anyone notice the vaulted copper ceiling is a different radius to the door, it looks so wrong, why was it never built the same. Call me OCD but that would constantly annoy me. Cheers,Michael.

  • Nice door, wrong height, thats why you didn’t show the treshold bottom finish, first time i see trim shape cutted in half otherwise it was made wrong . But bravo for salesman . 3k$ door with 20.000 $ profit !!! 👍👍👍 Door slab 1500$, frames 6-5/8 and brickmolds 1000$ max . Glass around 600$ 🤧 🧐 . Rich people detected in Calgary .

  • $23K for a door, and you still use 1″ screws in the hinges. What a joke. Is there some kind of conspiracy with the door industry deliberately manufacturing doors to be kicked in easier? Sink some 3 or 4 inch screws in the hardware please. At a minimum, one or two per hinge, and every hole on the bolts and strike plates. No door is immune to being kicked in, but it’s the first 5 kicks you need to hold up so you can prepare yourself.
