When Is The Right Time To Decorate A Real Christmas Tree?

The right location for your Christmas tree is crucial, as it should be away from heat vents or a fireplace, which can dry out the tree excessively. To create the right mood, measure the space and choose from various options, including classic real evergreens and artificial Christmas trees in metallic pink.

To decorate a Christmas tree like a professional, follow these 10 simple steps:

  1. Measure the space: Create the right mood by measuring the space and choosing the right tree type.
  2. Choose a long-lasting, low-maintenance replica Christmas tree.
  3. Allow at least a couple of hours for the tree to “settle” into shape before decorating.
  4. Allow 24 hours for the tree to be displayed indoors.
  5. Consider the safety of a properly maintained Christmas tree, as it should not be a fire hazard.
  6. Wait a day or two between putting the tree in its stand and decorating it.
  7. Check all lights and ornaments: Most real Christmas trees should last five to six weeks if they are looked after properly.
  8. Hang lights and ornaments: Hang lights and ornaments over a couple of hours before decorating.
  9. Check all lights: Check all lights and ornaments before lighting up the tree.
  10. When decorating, add lights and decorate the tree as desired.

In summary, decorating a Christmas tree like a professional requires understanding the elements, allowing time for the tree to settle into shape, and considering safety when choosing a tree. By following these tips, you can create a beautiful and safe Christmas tree that will last for years to come.

Looking for the perfect Christmas tree this holiday season? In this video, I’ll show you 5 of my favorite trees and guide you on how …

How long should I wait to decorate my Christmas tree?

Christmas decorating typically begins the weekend after Thanksgiving, but some choose to start in mid-December. This is ideal for families who are still gathered and can transition between the two holidays. When choosing when to decorate your Christmas tree, consider factors such as the live or artificial nature of the tree. A live tree can last around four weeks, so it might be best to wait until the first week of December to avoid dried needles and the natural fragrance of the tree. Artificial trees offer more flexibility as they look the same regardless of timing.

Is it too early to decorate the Christmas tree?

The traditional date for the installation of Christmas decorations is the first day of Advent, which falls on December 3rd, the fourth Sunday preceding Christmas. Mike Beatson-Smith, a creative director from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, has had his tree in place for several weeks and completed the exterior decorations of his residence one week later.

How soon is too soon to decorate for Christmas?

A majority of 65 editor friends recommend decorating for Christmas after Thanksgiving or the first week of December, as this schedule allows for a clean transition into the yuletide season and aligns with the start of Advent. The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park decorates on Thanksgiving Day. However, 15% agree that decorating after Thanksgiving is the best, suggesting waiting longer into December.

The remaining 20% prefer to start their Christmas tree early, even as early as November 1, as they crave the magic and merry before the turkey dinner. The ideal time to put up the Christmas tree is sometime soon after Thanksgiving.

Can you decorate a live tree right away?

Can you decorate a live tree right away?

After cutting and mounting a Christmas tree, allow it to sit overnight before decorating to allow the branches to widen and relax. This will allow the tree to fill out to its natural shape by morning. A fresh cut Christmas tree is crucial for maintaining its health throughout the year. After being cut on the farm, sap seals the wound within the first 4-6 hours. Before bringing the tree indoors, make a fresh cut about an inch from the base to improve water absorption.

Tree lot staff may offer a fresh cut, but only if you plan to bring the tree indoors immediately. Keep the tree away from heat sources like a fireplace or furnace vent to keep it fresher and prevent needle loss. A cool and well-watered tree is less of a fire hazard.

How long should a real tree sit before decorating?

Before decorating your Christmas tree, allow it to settle for a few hours to ensure it remains upright and straight. This allows the branches and needles to open into their natural shape. Avoid losing fragile ornaments by allowing the fresh-cut tree to relax before hanging lights and baubles. A beautifully decorated tree from a nursery is a stunning focal point for your decorations, whether you prefer an understated minimalist look or a bright, exuberant display. A live tree will show off the decorations perfectly, making your Christmas celebration unforgettable.

Will a real Christmas tree last 5 weeks?

Christmas trees can last up to five weeks, making the holiday season vibrant. To maintain their health and uprightness, it’s essential to choose a high-quality tree. There are various options for fresh-cut Christmas trees, including Firs like Nordmann Fir, Korean Fir, and Fraser Fir, which have soft needles and a classic shape. Following proper care tips can help ensure the tree remains verdant and upright.

How soon is too soon for a real Christmas tree?

The optimal period for purchasing a live Christmas tree is during the first to second week of December, typically following the Thanksgiving holiday until December 25. The lifespan of a natural Christmas tree is approximately three to four weeks, contingent upon the manner of its cutting and subsequent care. There are numerous varieties of Christmas trees, including pine, spruce, and cypress. Fraser firs are generally the longest-lasting and most durable of the species.

How long does a real Christmas tree stay fresh?

Christmas trees, even fresh-cut ones, can last up to four to five weeks if properly cared for. However, the lifespan may vary depending on the tree species. Signs of a tree’s end include brittle needles falling off, drooping branches, and ornaments weighing them down. To extend the tree’s lifespan, start with non-living decorations and finish with fresh greenery and your tree around December 1st. It’s important to monitor fragile trees and avoid putting up decorations earlier than necessary.

How soon can you put up a live tree?

A freshly cut Christmas tree is typically suitable for use for a period of several weeks following the Christmas holiday, provided that it is properly set up and maintained.

How do I know if my Christmas tree is fresh?

The freshness of a cut Christmas tree can be determined by running one’s hand over a branch, noting the pliability of the needles, and lightly bouncing the butt on the ground. A tree that has been allowed to dry out will have heavy needle drops, whereas a tree that has been freshly cut will drop only a few needles. For further information on the selection and care of Christmas trees, please refer to the accompanying guide.

How long does a fake Christmas tree last?

Artificial Christmas trees can last up to 10 years, depending on factors like tree quality, care, and lighting. To minimize their impact, artificial trees should be used for 20 years or more. Real Christmas trees, which take years to grow, provide benefits to people and nature, such as absorbing carbon and providing oxygen. The amount of carbon a tree absorbs depends on factors like soil type, tree type, and age.

One acre of Christmas trees generates enough daily oxygen for 18 people and provides habitat for birds and small animals. However, to minimize the impact of artificial trees, it is recommended to use them for 20 years or more.

  • I see a ton of comments on how expensive these trees are. I didn’t even check the price out because I knew they would be. However, I do appreciate this article and perusal your articles and loving your talent you have. I am a senior on a fixed income with classy tastes so last year I bought a white tree at Wal-Mart for $89. I bought some things on sale at a craft store and decorated it all in white. It turned out gorgeous. I know it isn’t high quality decorations but it’s just me looking at it for a month or so. Once you turn the lights out with just the tree lights on it looks expensive. I have another tree that is green that I got at Home Depot on sale after Christmas a few years ago. I put up two trees now and I change out a few things on the green tree every year. I have learned a lot from your Christmas articles. We all wish we had the money to decorate as you do but thank you for the pleasure of dreaming of what we would really like our tree to look like if we could afford it.

  • Honey, have you seen the economy? No average person can afford 800-1400$ for a Christmas tree. My kids will be lucky if they get more than 2 presents each this year and forget about any presents for me! I love you though and love the hair! You are gorgeous and so is that Amber tree 😘 You are my Christmas spirit this year, your joy brings me joy 😘

  • I have been a fan for years. But, i feel a shift in your content lately, Rebecca. The fact that you didn’t include even one “smaller budget friendly” tree in your lineup is tone deaf, in my opinion. You have always given us content with a mix of high end fabulous and small budget friendly options. Always. And, i found the exact same Sparkle tree for $400 less than the price you are listing it for. The exact tree, so that shows me that you have chosen an incredible markup for profit. There is nothing wrong with profit and business, but I’m this economy, it feels like an extreme choice. And a purposeful decision. Surely, someone on your team must have mentioned that these prices would be difficult for many of your viewers and perhaps suggested you include one budget tree. If they did, and you decided not to, that was the wrong business choice. If literally noone on your teamebrought this up, perhaps that is a problem that should be addressed. This is honest feedback from a long time fan. It feels like you are shifting in your business model, or perhaps are in a tight financial place yourself, but the shift is not feeling positive.

  • I am very sad. I have been an enthusiastic member of the Design Sessions for a few years now and I´m learning wonderful things that definately changed not only the way I decorate but also my life! I am overjoyed to have discovered Rebecca and Sharrah in 2020 and I`m still very enthusiastic! I was so excited to see the tips on Christmas trees. My Christmas decorations definitely have that next modern level with the wow effect since learning and implementing Rebecca’s ideas! It is wonderful! I understand that Amber Marie is worth her price. But I would have liked to see at least one tree included for all the many enthusiastic fans and loyal Design Session members, that doesn’t start at 600 dollars. Even with the cooperation with Amber Marie, consideration could have been given to these fans at least on one tree chosen from Amazon, for example. Unfortunately, in these times of global economic crisis, this is not mentioned at all. I am very sad about this class separation! It`s easily done to keep that in mind although we all love Rebecca`s very luxurious way to decorate the christmas trees.

  • HO, HO, NO! How will I afford the divorce attorney if I buy one of these expensive trees? Because, my husband will either divorce me or have me committed. 😂 Actually, I’d have myself committed! Kidding aside, I donated all my holiday decorations a long time ago so I am content perusal Rebecca’s extravaganza every year. It’s a show like no other and I admire her talent and stamina in going all out for the season.

  • Don’t mind the hair colour but don’t wear white, it makes you fade away, no matter how much makeup you use. I love the way you decorate but for some reason you have abandoned colour and gone crystal or neutrals. Very pretty but ……and the decorations are very high end. Most of us can’t change out everything each year. You have priced us out of our comfort zone. perusal you from Canada where there is snow!

  • Rebecca, I just want to let you know I love and appreciate you. I don’t want you to be discouraged because some of us can’t afford these tree’s. And some were unkind in their comments I have tree’s I bought at my local thrift store. They were pretty and a bargain. And there are options. There are cheap upgrades such as adding more lights, and buying flocking. I wish people would think about counting their blessings. We need less than what we have in most cases. I have a roof over my head. Many people don’t. I haven’t missed a meal. I have beautiful used clothing. Can anyone tell? Nope. I have a car. I can put gas in it. I thank God for being able to do all these things. I make under $1000 a month. I’m very low income.

  • Rebecca, I had trouble seeing the trees, with your new look, that gorgeous hair color makes you look 20 years younger!!!!! I hope you see this post so you keep your new look…. the trees were pretty, YOU girlfriend…gorgeous, beautiful….I recently went from all gray color to platinum, makes a big difference, I started turning gray at 45, because of illness, so when people saw gray they saw “old”, but with “platinum” it looks like more younger. your new color allows your face to come out where the dark can look harsh. just love it….hope you see how good you look.

  • I’m a bit of a traditionalist and the Marie is my favorite. Love that it converts to different heights and love the realistic branches. The only thing I would change is to have a “slow glow” setting on the lights. My current tree has lights that are several years old and the slow-glow setting is so calm and completely mesmerizing. I will be traumatized when these light stop working as I’ve not been able to find this type with eight different light settings. I have to say that I love, Love, LOVE your new hair! It is so chic and sophisticated and it looks AMAZING on you! I can’t wait until I turn completely gray! I love my gray blazes around my face but to have all that gorgeous gray is the dream! You look absolutely fabulous! 😍🥰😍

  • Hi ms. Rebecca! Alex from the Philippines! Im always perusal your YTC. Just wanna asked if how would you keep your Christmas tree free from dust and dirt? From storage to the actual duration of displaying the tree. Coz here we had a very long Christmas season that took 4 or more months to celebrate the christmas. Thanks

  • I made a note to myself to get my 12ft tree out in Sept a section of lights went out. Changed all the lights in that section they got super bright and blew out again. At this point I am thinking about clipping all the lights out and adding fairy lights or rice lights? I love that look. I also love a twinkle light but a true twinkle. Any suggestions? Also my tree is flocked but its an amazing true flock look but the best part is the flock doesnt come off. 🙂 The halo perfect! Where can I get it? I love the hair!

  • Love the hair❤ looks great on you❤ You answered my question on how to buy a Christmas Tree! How did you know ? I am going to order asap fr A&M … if I can afford . Question? Are the lights on trees the micro mini lights ? Saw those last year at a high end store and they said this year. They were so pretty.

  • But wait…. where was the hair “reveal”?! I saw your hair on the trailer before the article even started! It seemed like a spoiler cuz I was so looking forward to the “reveal”! 😂 *thinks about getting a life*. You wear it well, by the way! Your trees and home are always gorgeous and a source of inspiration for me! I do wish you would at least acknowledge the ri-dunc-u-lously expensive prices when you praise Amber Marie. The trees are high, yes, but more crazy to me is the prices of the basic decorations. Surely they are quality, but $23 for a 4″ glass ball? Last year I was on Amber Marie’s site shopping Sharrah’s adorable home (I died it was so cute!) and after putting a few items in my cart I just had to hit the X and close. It was quite literally going to be thousands and thousands of dollars to recreate that. Obvs people can work around that and shop elsewhere, but it quite bothers me that you don’t acknowledge it. (Aren’t things supposed to be less expensive in Tulsa?!) I’m still looking forward to seeing what you have in the lineup for us! Your caring personality looks genuine and your talent and creativity is beyond!

  • I understand some of the comments that state these particular trees are out of budget. Like many things, you have to dupe to your budget. What Rebecca is very good at is showing you design. Whether you can afford an Amber Marie (and many people can) or not, take the design elements of her series and make it your own. I’ve watched her for many years and that’s what I’ve always done. It works for all of us in some way. Now the hair…….I like the other look. The blonde seems to wash you out abit.

  • While you wear many colors and versions of your hairstyle, this looks good too. However, please do not feel pressure to go silver before your time. Why not try it for a year, then go back to the color variations that make you look younger. You can always re-visit silver in 10+ years. Do you really want to be silver now forever???

  • NOPE……WHEN YOUR HEART WAS IN DESIGN….IT WAS SO GOOD…BUT LATELY YOUR articleS ARE AN INFORMEROCAL. YOUR DESIGN WORK IS GOOD…AND I WAS ALWAYS SURPRISED THAT IT TOOK YOU YEARS TO HIT A MILLION —- BUT YOUR CONSTANT SELLING OF THE DESIGN SESSIONS AND NOW THE “TRYING” TO SELL CHRISTmas ITEMS IS AWFUL…..LET’S FACE FACTS —– BALSAM HILL IS THE BEST NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY – YOUR ABILITY TO SELL/PROMOTE IS SO SAD. AND LET’S ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM — THE NEWEST DESIGN ON TRESS IS THE LED TWINKLE CLUSTER LIGHTS….

  • Rebecca, you do such beautiful work, your home is Amazing, I am so much in love with your gold panels, I would love, love to know if that is gold leaf, metal, gold paint, I don’t know if more people would like to know but those 2 gold pieces are stunning and such a perfection beside your painting…any chance we can know how they were made?…Please, please.

  • Rebecca, I love ❤️ your website! 🎄🎅🤶🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄But $80, dollar’s for the halo twinkle lights is a lot of money 💰 for regular society! See you we’re once like us, but then you had your success, and became wealthy! But not all of us have had that kind of success in life, some of us are doing good just to have a house at all! So I feel left out a lot on this website because I can’t buy stuff like this. I hope you can understand that! ❤🙏🏻✨️🎄

  • Wigs? Were those wigs up until now? All beautiful… very classy lady. Anything our Rebecca wears, or does for that matter, is glorious. We want to see how the bedroom turns out!! Do we have to sign up for the whole year then? We’ve never been exluded before.. why now? I love the TREES so much. Every shop should present them like this: this is the tree for you..♡♡♡ xx..

  • The Rebecca tree is a more beautiful tree, out of the three. It has that elegant flow, gently cascading from the top down to the bottom as if floating, so magical you can see it. The 1st tree is well made, one can see the quality. The 2nd one is also very natural in color and shape and so practical. All 3 are great, really. I did like your hair before, the color and the style. Platinum blonde also suits your flawless complexion ( porcelain or ivory?) your radiant face and your sparkling personality. Wonderful lady!👍🧚‍♀💃🌲🌏🌟❄

  • I had to see your hair, so before I rushed off to work yesterday, I put this article on…and oh my gosh, you look even more gorgeous! I wasn’t expecting that. I figured it would look really nice but your natural hair color would be better, WOW, You look even more beautiful. Maybe the color is more fitting for our age, I don’t know. I just know you wear it very well and you actually look more beautiful. How did you do that? I have been contemplating changing mine for the same reasons. I will give it more consideration now. Thanks for being brave enough to try it, but of course, what else would we expect from you. God bless.

  • Love your new look Rebecca, it was great to see you embrace your age and to me you absolutely rock it! I can’t afford any of these trees but I appreciate the article for the work you and your team put in for our viewing. I get so much inspiration from you that I can then implement in my budget and my space. Great job! 🇨🇦🎄👏

  • Hi Rebecca I love your website you are extraordinary and your decorations wonderful. I would like to use a spinner this year to make the decorations twirl beautifully on the Christmas tree. I can’t find them on the Polish market. Please provide me with a link where I can buy them outside of Poland. Thank you.

  • I missed you, my beautiful diva queen, SO much last week!!!! But I’m glad you’re back with this AMAZING article! It goes without saying (but you should hear it) that your hair looks AMAZING and those eyes are perfect for it. I just can’t WAIT for this year’s Christmas content (although you’re interior design articles are EQUALLY perfection)! I just wish there were a way to filter the seen articles with the unseen because I “be” missing you the other days of the week, so I’m always digging through them for one I missed! 😂 ANYWAY, thank you for all you do. ❤

  • Hi Rebecca! What a wonderful start to the holiday season. I love all the trees. I would choose based on what room the tree would be in. Yes, I love my trees. I’m expanding my comfort zone and trying spinners. I’m so glad you mentioned the LED spinners. Your hair is stunning. You look absolutely gorgeous. I’m so excited excited for the next articles. My winter project, the Design Sessions! ❤

  • 1, Your hair is phenomenal. so much better than the wigs. 2, I feel so validated right now. A friend of mine was rather taken aback that I was shopping for a Christmas tree in September. Normally I try not to give Christmas a thought until Thanksgiving (small apartment I really can afford to wait) but this requires some forethought. 3, I will be going with none of these. My ceiling is just shy of 8 ft and also I’m not rich. 😅

  • 🎄Fantastic Rebecca! These trees are the prettiest I have ever seen, And I have seen a lot! This is so great for you and you should have had a tree named after you along time ago! I get it though, time was not right! I would have one of each, if I could! Also, your hair looks remarkable! You look beautiful! Im not just saying that, it’s true!

  • Omg Rebecca, I have to comment even before I end to watch your article, your hair it looks so freaking amazing!!! You look burning 🔥 🔥🔥🔥 from all the hair colours you had before this is the one I most love!!! Regarding your article I can comment in the advance it will be great as usual ❤❤❤🇨🇦 PS: my favourite trees were the Rebecca and Hannah one ❤❤❤

  • We are very fortunate to have a wonderful plant nursery and store that goes all out at Christmas. We put up three trees every year, decked with beautiful ornaments, each with a theme and coordinating with the room. All three of the trees are 8 feet tall, artificial. We have purchased them from this nursery the day after Christmas when they are half price. Best way to buy. We do have one from Balsam Hill which I purchased in July a few years ago. Half price, very full and pretty. I love the fragrance of real trees but after all the work to put up our three, they are lovingly put away throughout Jan/Feb. I swear each year that I won’t do as much for the next Christmas, but, I always do, and I don’t even have a vlog! Everything looks beautiful and my son loves it. Plus 60 Nutcrackers we place on the front staircase. Very cute. Will enjoy perusal your process this year, Rebecca. Always stunning.

  • P hello Rebecca James from Dallas Texas just want to say I’m a flocked tree person and I love the twinkle Lights I’ve used them since they come out and that Halo light is pretty cool I must say I love the Rebecca tree probably the best but I do like the other one I believe it was called Hannah so thank you for showing all these trees every one of them are beautiful❤❤❤❤❤❤

  • Beautiful hair and lovely trees. I bought my first faux tree in the early 80s, and my landlords didn’t believe it was fake. It wasn’t cheap, but we used it for many years before finally donating it. I wanted a pre-lit tree and picked one up at a yard sale ($5). I put it behind the sofa and used the two upper sections atop a cabinet, saving lots of floor space and giving the impression of a taller tree. I drape a few large “crystal” (plastic) flakes from the brass arms of the DR light fixture. When my son moved his family into their own home, I passed along the tree, extra lights, and all sorts of ornaments. (Anything to make my grandson happy!) I now choose between a faux sapling and/or several lovely pre-lit tabletop trees – a more natural “Solstice” theme. Lots of snowflakes, glittery cones, and a scenario of tiny bottle-brush trees with elk, moose, etc., and a Woodsman / Santa figure on top of my Hoosier cabinet. (Xmas needs a little kitsch!) I’m currently decluttering my home, so I can enjoy it throughout the Winter season. Love your articles, Rebecca. Thank you so much!

  • The last live article I didn’t think the platinum hair will impacted me so much. It took me 3 minutes into this article to really really and love so much your new look. You look stuning, your voice feels so energetic and the most important thing is you seem very happy and liked you said no more wigs. Thank you for uploading it early and showing us the latest for this christmas decor 2024. Ready for every Thursday from now on.

  • You are gorgeous………..14 15 years ago………….your beautiful face is what made me stop and watch my first RR article….and I have been hooked ever since. My background is designer custom faux hair……theatrical makeup…….and non surgical and surgical stuff lol!!! I only say that to let you know…….bio hair…light and or dark…….hilites……faux dooz……light or dark……..you are gorgeous inside and out!!! You look amazing. Hugs and love from MO…..and Chitown…..Robb

  • Love, love the hair, ☺️. The trees are beautiful, I got my flocked tree last year and my grand children loved it. My grand son asks how the snow didn’t melt. God love him, he realized it wasn’t real when he touched it,lol. My living room, kitchen and hall to the bedrooms were all decorated with snow flakes and twinkling lights on the ceiling. The children loved it and so did my family. Lots of work goes into decorating and into the details. Thats why I love perusal your articles, not just Christmas but all of them. You are the best Rebecca ☺️.

  • The one critical aspect for me that you did not speak of is storage! I must have something that can fit into a closet. It looked like these do not have a folding capability. I will stick with my 4-piece, remote control, folding with little fluffing, Frontgate tree. But loved this article and your hair. I recently went my natural white (not my profile pic) and have been getting good feedback. Thanks, Rebecca!!

  • Everything looks so festive. Glad you moved large vase to the island, it took away from how pretty the garland over your window it. Which btw is so soft and pretty, it drapes and falls so nicely. I laughed as you kept moving everything around. I do too. Your end result was perfect. Cute pumpkin color nails.

  • Would like to see you decorate for Christmas with stuff from Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree! The places where most of us can barely afford. Choose a tree, lights, decorations, etc. on a smaller budget. I personally could only afford a tree under $100. And still using the same decorations I’ve had for like 5+ years. I think it would resonate with at least half of the viewers.
