This programme is so good, and as someone now living in an appartment (as opposed to a house), the most important tip is # 9 DECLUTTER:DOWNSIZE/GET RID OF. I still do this periodically and I am always amazed that I still find things that can go out or to the 2nd hand store. It is so psychologically liberating and you can’t put a price on that.
I am in the process of downsizing and consider myself a serial dejunkifier. Love this article, super helpful. Active Zones and Passive Zones-great tips. I knew some of this instinctively but when you said “put your melon baller away” that made it click for me because I am definitely not melonballing everyday, nor am I pizza cutting or pie serving on the daily. Also love the ode to the Magic Eraser and your “…if it was covered in red wine..” litmus test. I love your (very charming) presentation style and thank you for the inspiration today.
Great tips! In order to keep your empty velvet hangers accessible and your rod clutter free, corral your empties in one spot on the shelf above or the end of the rod. This is great for laundry too, just grab a chunk of hangers and off you go. I’ve done this for 20 years or so and it has become ingrained, habitual. ✌
I am actually experiencing such a release from anxiety my having things ordered in such a sensible way. Thank you. Thank you. I have 4 boys who live to make mess, a clinically organised (but totally defeated) husband who feels miserable at the mess, and I am clawing my way out of 10 (count em, 10) years of post partum anxiety, and the biggest source of shame and frustration has been my inability to keep a home. This is friggen liberating. Thank you
I dont know u but i love u,, you are litterally giving adivice that save me so much time to organize and i always strugle to think how i would make living alone for the 1st time being more easier and life changing starting from organization,, i will write your notes and place it untill it become a habit to be this organize
Wow this article was actually life changing for me—coming from an “adult” with major ADHD dealing with health issues that would likely heal more quickly—as my nervous system has recently been in a constant sympathetic state, making infectious disease impossible to heal. And my apartment being a HOT MESS is likely a pretty large contributing factor. Also, dust etc….I’ve tried and failed with so many other books, but this article honestly makes the most sense to me BY FAR (it’s also tailored well for peeps with ADHD!) THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
12:00 That looks like a great way to make use of that awkward space but I’d advise you to put some sort of UV protect tint on your window so your items don’t get sun damage. These days you can buy an easy sheet that just rolls on and you can check its working with uv detect spots that you can buy on amazon. Great article, thanks for sharing!
This was super helpful, thank you!! Also – I adore your authentic, straight-forward delivery! 🙂 (and yah, magic erasers changed my life forever.) Velvet hangers, too. You can get them really cheap at Ross et al. Amazing for visually AND functionally changing the closet experience. I’ve also never even thought about “weirdo” spaces until you mentioned it. Time to go hunting!!
Caroline – Love your candor. I moved into a 2 bedroom apartment from a 4 bedroom home – (just me w/o the ex-hub) 🙂 anyway I have spent the last couple of years making it cozy FOR ME. I am a DIY’r and crafter – so I can easily fill up space. Thank you for the red wine analogy. I am definitely going to use that!! I also have been babysitting my grandson – so the other method I will be using as I am constantly re-arranging for his crawling, walking and grabbing is; “Can he grab it easily and get hurt by it?” and/or will I constantly be yelling “NO” – as I don’t want to do that. Thanks again – will be perusal more articles!
Okay, really the biggest thing is just get rid of a lot of your stuff, which I’m working on and the whole paper thing/files is a huge one I’ve been working on. So I’ve been going through paper files and they go into three piles… 1) Just trash 2) Paper with personal information on, into the shredder 3) Anything important gets scanned and then usually into the shredder Oh and I do backup my Scanning folder to the cloud, just in case Off topic… 1) You have a very cute positive personality 😉 2) Beautiful hair BTW 😉 3) Ummmm was that you at the gas pump, or stock article? Thanks! Subscribed.
