Mike’s Diner Bar, a popular Midtown Palo Alto restaurant, is set to close permanently on Father’s Day. The 29-year-old owner, who opened the restaurant in 1995, announced the closure after being one day late with a rent payment. The restaurant had been closed for 17 months due to the pandemic and had to temporarily close in January for a major renovation. In 2017, Mike Wallau took over the restaurant and added a second room that used to be a neighboring hardware store.
The restaurant, located at 2680 Middlefield Road, has been a staple in the Palo Alto community for nearly 30 years. The owner, Mike Wallau, remodeled the diner in 2019, spending about $2 million. He said his rent of just over $22,000 was due July 17, but a family emergency kept him from paying it.
Mike Wallau, who grew up blocks from his restaurant, announced that the neighborhood staple will close its doors on Sunday. The restaurant had been closed for a year and a half for a major renovation and expansion, and Wallau added a second room which used to be a neighboring hardware store. After surviving a high-profile eviction, the owner of Mike’s Diner Bar in Midtown Palo Alto announced Wednesday that he is shutting down his establishment.
The eviction notice was set to take effect on September 11, 2023, but on September 8, Wallau reached an agreement with the property owners to continue operating. Mike’s Diner Bar has been there for nearly 30 years and has faced challenges such as the pandemic, construction, and rent payments.
