Thirdhand smoke, a chemical residue from tobacco smoke, can remain on surfaces for years after individuals stop smoking or move out. This toxic residue can linger in dust, household surfaces, carpets, furniture, clothes, and building materials, making it difficult and expensive to remove.

In homes where tobacco has been smoked regularly over many years, thirdhand smoke residue is likely to be embedded in materials throughout the home, creating persistent pollution reservoirs. Thirdhand smoke is a strong, offensive odor that indicates the presence of tobacco toxins, including carcinogens and heavy metals. These toxins are absorbed into carpets, curtains, furniture, walls, and ceilings, and are released back into the air, causing cancer and respiratory illnesses in people and pets. The residue left behind from tobacco smoke is sticky and difficult to clean, and owners of living spaces where smoking has been present often face expensive property damage.

To protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangerous effects of second and thirdhand smoke, it is essential to clean and renovate a home that has been smoked in, or avoid spending time inside the home altogether. Proper cleaning and renovation can help prevent the negative effects of toxins left behind from tobacco or marijuana smoke on your health.

Secondhand smoke can spread through various sources, including doorways, cracks in walls, electrical lines, ventilation systems, and plumbing. To protect yourself and your family from secondhand smoke outside your home, ensure your child’s daycare or school has a tobacco-free policy, set a good example for young people, and look for restaurants and public places that do not allow smoking. If your state or community does not have laws preventing exposure to secondhand smoke in public areas, consider finding non-smoking areas in restaurants. Additionally, discuss the benefits of a smoke-free policy in your workplace with your employer.

Research on the potential health risks of lingering tobacco smoke odors and residuals on surfaces is limited. However, particles from secondhand tobacco smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), can settle in dust and remain there long after the smoke is gone. Secondhand smoke is a mixture of two forms of smoke from burning tobacco: mainstream smoke, which is exhaled by a smoker, and sidestream smoke, which comes from the lighted end of a cigarette or tobacco burning in a hookah. Involuntary smoking or passive smoking occurs when people who don’t smoke are exposed to SHS, exposing them to nicotine and toxic chemicals similar to those who smoke.

  • Whoa! I am a Big time smoker and living in a cold climate tend to smoke indoors with windows wide open. Spring cleaning time, now the sun is out. This actually works, no need for American cleaning detergents! Thank you so much! I added a little vinegar for getting rid of the smell. I am sitting here stunned at my white walls!

  • AMAZED…..It actually worked!! Very time saving too and I can do a much larger area. I love those mops and have several on hand due to laminate flooring. Being a smoker and my late husband was also the only solution I knew was Awesome spray from Dollar Tree. That was spray, wipe, spray wipe over the walls and exhausting!! A huge thank you for showing something that actually worked and affordable.

  • My mother used to call it wood work. We washed the walls every year and she’d always say “get your hands off my wall.” Lmao til this day (I’m 51) I still wash my walls. Can’t tell if I have smoker walls so I looked it up, but I don’t know if I have this problem. I smoke marijuana. Regularly wash walls, clothes, and carpet. Doesn’t smell like smoke in my place but I still worry. One thing I use for any tough spots is a Mr. Clean eraser. Super good for dark marks on walls, appliances and sneakers. Even cleaned the paint from another car in an accident off my car. Works wonders, not expensive…try it out!😊

  • I just came across your website. I have an old wood dining room table with chairs and a china cabinet, buffet storage piece; that was given to me. I believe the original owners who I don’t know smoked in the area where it was kept; because the only part of the whole set that is actually white is the very top of the China Cabinet every thing else(table, China Cabinet, Chairs, buffet storage piece) are all yellow. What can I use to actually see if the real color of the whole set was white without damaging any of the pieces? That is also budget friendly

  • There’s no way no how is some Dawn going to properly cut through the tar, nicotine and grease that make up a layer of smoky grime on the walls. Basically the only thing this article teaches is that you can clean stuff using copious amount of elbow grease with any old detergent – work harder, not smarter? If you really want to dissolve the greasy muck you need TSP, which is a degreaser.

  • We are cleaning and remodeling rental property. Guy Was a smoker and wood burner used for heat. Also oak hardwood floors have pet damage. My husband just wants to cut out the bad parts, patch and the cover with vinyl plank flooring with a vapor seal. House stinks we need help. Dawn is wonderful I make my own Dawn Powerwash. These walls are drywall and we also need to remove a border in the living room

  • An easier way… spray nine the walls, rinse thoroughly…even clean instantly air cleaners…the way I do it is, take air cleaner outside, spray it with spray nine inside and out, rise thoroughly inside and out, (I use the garden hose)leave in the hot sun for the day, 2 to be sure, once ur surer its dry, it will look like new…u can even clean the filter than way. Works for me.

  • I tried to follow two different links to see if I could get your flat mop one just took me to your site where I couldn’t find it. I spent three minutes there. I said fuck it and left and then I went to the Amazon supposed link and it’s been about four minutes in there and said fuck it your stuff is not easy to find make your links work for each individual product and not have to sift through a bunch of other stuff and then you will get affiliate credit instead of just irritating me with the amount of time I spent trying to give you money and it not working. Enjoyed your article

  • I’ve painted enough nicotine covered walls from years of smoking. Has no one heard of primer? This is what it’s for, prime the walls 2/3 times with some good primer and then paint your color 2 coats. No need for all this. Kinda gross to me, getting the walls all wet, it soaks in ya know….they aren’t made of plastic.

  • This makes me sad to imagine this residue in people’s bodies, and to imagine the issues that come with just living in a house like this. Thank you for helping people improve their homes like this, I’m sure just seeing the difference can help change how someone sees their life, improve their mindset about quitting/having quit smoking.

  • Any way of stopping the smoke from coming inside of an apartment from a neighbor that smokes? I’ve been exposed to the smell for about 3 weeks and its getting to a point that is no longer comfortable to live in the apartment. Ive been getting allergies, burning eyes and burning throat from how bad it is. Any legal action I can take would help to since the land lord isn’t doing much about it.

  • I can’t stand nicotine second hand smoke don’t bother Me in public if I’m talking outside to a smoker but I can’t stand that crap in My house I’m just spraying house with all kind of things including carb cleaner under house. Don’t let people smoke in Your house I’m getting a gallon of deodorants and will spray every day. I have spray and will spray all days that’s something you won’t get not blind nicotine smells like solid poop. I’m going to bleach walls and glades to. Rule of thumb don’t allow people to light up in Your house

  • Many people when they smoke they are really unpolite smoking close to others in public or common environments. There are MANY people with allergy and breathing problems out there and when is a need to stay in some place perusal over the cigarette smoke comes first. I dont know if people with a cigarette in their hands really realize how much that smoke affects others lives and health.

  • I just returned to my home (after being away for 4 years) and the smell was so overwhelming I thought I was surrounded by a colony of stinkbugs. After going through the home evaluating what needed to be repaired, etc. among these appliances, I learned that softeners can actually ruin the washing machine. Long story short, someone told me that during the recent shutdown, and due to a lack of goods, they had used the softener to mop and clean to refresh the baseboards. I took (several) buckets and with softener mixed with water, I started washing down furniture. To my dismay, the gunk that came off of it was a color similar to that of coffee stains only it was sticky. After wiping the furniture, baseboards, hand-railings, door frames, doors, and walls with a microfiber cloth soaked with this mix, removing and tossing curtains (that could not be washed) the house began to smell a lot better. I will try the scented oil in the vinegar to spray the ac returns. Thank you for the ideas.

  • So, the ozone machines are dangerous to humans and animals. Ozone affects the lungs and mucus membranes. If you use one, don’t be in the house (take out all pets). Don’t use it longer than 2 hours, and air your house out with every door and window open for at least 2 hours (4 hours would be better). Definitely not recommended to use an ozone machine, I don’t even recommend thinking about an ozone machine. Do a ton of research (I have) and be warry of potential health problems for your family and pets….also if you are a smoker (like me) and you want to sell your house, sell it to a smoker. Don’t let a non-smoker lower your asking price just because he doesn’t like the smoke smell. # movement to keep non smokers outside.
