What Is The Style Of Interior Design Along The Coast?

Coastal interior design is a style that brings the beach lifestyle to home design, using watery hues and natural textures to create a relaxed atmosphere. This style emphasizes a casual feeling that’s both relaxing and uplifting, aiming to evoke a blissful and breezy getaway. Coastal homes are known for their simplicity and focus on natural elements found in coastal areas.

Coastal interior design is characterized by its use of light tones, soft tones, and a clean aesthetic, aiming to evoke the breeziness of the beach. It also incorporates casual furnishings, such as sisal rugs, sea glass details, and gauzy linen drapery, to create a cozy interior. The key elements of coastal interior design include natural light, a light color palette, and natural materials like wood, wicker, and linen.

Coastal interiors are not only pretty but also have a calming atmosphere. They are characterized by soothing blue hues, beachy decor, natural fibers, and weathered wood furniture. Coastal design is characterized by the reflection of natural seaside elements—surf, sand, and sky—in the home through color and texture.

In summary, coastal interior design is a timeless and relaxed style that focuses on the natural elements and colors found in coastal areas. By incorporating soft tones, neutral layers, and strong lines, homeowners can create a comfortable, soul-calming space that reflects the beauty of the beach and the surrounding environment.

Can you mix coastal and farmhouse decor?

In a coastal farmhouse interior, key rustic pieces such as wooden bowls, wall clocks, coffee tables, and woven baskets are essential. Vintage elements can elevate the farmhouse aesthetic, and a slipcovered sofa is a versatile addition that pairs well with farmhouse favorites. Combined textures like wicker, rattan, and light-weathered woods can add depth and personality to the décor.

In the bedroom, decorative accents like jute rugs and throw pillows can create a cozy atmosphere. Soft textured rugs in neutral colors can make the space feel warmer and more inviting. A coastal farmhouse-friendly paint palette, such as warm white or sandy beige, can transform the bedroom into a light and airy haven. Abstract coastal artwork, such as blue and white elements, can also look stunning in a coastal farmhouse space.

Exterior features like Dutch front doors, lap and board and batten siding, single-gabled roofs, and outbuildings can also add character to the home. Seaside-inspired elements like rocking chairs or a cozy chaise lounge can be incorporated into outbuildings, while a wrap-around porch creates a country-style feel and a farmhouse aesthetic.

Incorporating these elements can create a cohesive and inviting coastal farmhouse interior. By incorporating these elements, you can create a unique and welcoming space that reflects the coastal lifestyle.

What makes a home look coastal?

Coastal homes are designed to be breezy, relaxed, and use a natural color palette, often featuring earthy tones and crisp whites. They often use natural fabrics like linen and wood or cane furniture, and aim to create cohesive spaces with a central theme that blends seamlessly from one room to the next. To achieve this, start with natural light, such as large windows, skylights, mirrors, and glass doors. Artificial lights or candles can also be added to brighten up the rooms, such as wrapping fairy lights around stairs or window frames or furniture.

Additionally, adding multiple sets of fairy lights to mason jars can create portable lights that can be used indoors or outdoors. By embracing natural light and incorporating a central theme, coastal homes can create a relaxed, breezy atmosphere with a touch of luxury.

What is the difference between coastal and farmhouse decor?

The traditional farmhouse style and its coastal counterparts differ by incorporating coastal colors and textures, such as blue tones and cane and rattan textures. To fuse the two styles, layer natural and industrial elements with coastal ones, such as exposed brick and metal work, reclaimed wood, and rattan. Reclaimed wood, a key feature of farmhouse style, gets a coastal treatment with a whitewashed or driftwood vibe, bridging the gap between higher contrast farmhouse style and lower contrast coastal style. This coastal inspired color palette creates a unique and inviting home.

Is coastal decor out of style?

Coastal decor is a timeless style that focuses on creating relaxing spaces that evoke the serenity of coastal landscapes, using colors and materials that complement the natural beauty. Cassie Scaldaferri, of Cass Design Co, believes that this style will remain on trend due to its versatility and adaptability, making it suitable for any budget. The core of this style is a serene vibe that makes homes comfortable to relax in, and its qualities have stood the test of time. Although design is personal, as long as the atmosphere of the style is effectively captured, coastal interiors should feel timeless.

What is the difference between coastal and nautical decor?

Coastal interiors are typically characterized by a minimalist aesthetic, often featuring clean, white, neutral, or colored accents. In contrast, nautical interiors evoke a kitsch sensibility, incorporating elements such as anchors, bottles, ropes, and sea shells. While these elements are not essential, the details are more nuanced and refined. In order to establish a coastal theme within a domestic setting, it is recommended that the aforementioned elements be incorporated in accordance with the individual’s own preferences, with the style adjusted accordingly.

What is modern coastal interior design?

The modern coastal style, which features brass tapware and luxurious furniture, offers a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining the relaxed ambience associated with the Hamptons. This style is popular among those with Victorian sensibilities who are seeking a change of pace or city dwellers who are seeking a holiday retreat. Mitra Whittle, a senior interior designer, posits that this style is conducive to both those seeking a change of scenery and city dwellers seeking a holiday retreat.

What colors are used in coastal design?

The coastal color palette is characterized by a combination of sandy neutrals, nautical blues, soft yellows, and white paint colors. These colors are complemented by natural fibers, clean lines, and sunlight, resulting in an effortless style. The color scheme is further enhanced by the inclusion of sea glass, reclaimed wood, and sweetgrass baskets, which evoke the ambience of ocean breezes and beachside relaxation, rendering the color scheme ideal for year-round use.

Coastal interior design is a sophisticated design approach that aims to bring the tranquility of the beach into your home. Drawing inspiration from the colors and landscape of the seashore, this style evokes a sense of easy, luxuriously understated living. Sarah Solis, founder and principal of Sarah Solis Design Studio, and member of the AD Pro directory, describes coastal interiors as having soft tones with relaxed and comfortable materials executed with strong lines and intention without feeling too loose or undefined.

Angela Hamwey, founder of Mackenzie and Co., and Sarah Solis, a Malibu-based interior designer, explains that the key to a coastal style lies in the colors, which should blend seamlessly from the outdoors into the interiors. Earth tones and natural textures must work together to create a design that is harmonious with its surroundings. The woven texture on the bed helps bring the coastal vibe into this bedroom, showcasing the harmonious blend of earth tones and natural textures in coastal interior design.

What is considered coastal decor?

Coastal interior design is a style that draws inspiration from the coastal environment, including the beach itself and surrounding natural elements. It includes a broader range of coastal elements such as sand dunes, seagrass, and coastal vegetation. The color palette in coastal design is typically more expansive, incorporating shades beyond the typical beachy colors. Coastal design emphasizes natural materials like light-colored woods, wicker, and rattan, as well as textured materials like jute, sisal, and natural fibers.

Coastal design is more refined and sophisticated, incorporating elements like elegant furniture pieces, refined finishes, and subtle coastal accents to create a cohesive and well-curated look. Beachy interior design, on the other hand, draws inspiration from the beach and aims to recreate the relaxed and carefree atmosphere associated with beach vacations. It focuses primarily on the beach as a central theme, using soft, soothing hues of white, cream, beige, and various shades of blue.

Beachy design has a more casual and laid-back feel, often incorporating distressed or weathered finishes, sun-bleached woods, and natural textures like rope, seagrass, and linen. It often includes playful and whimsical elements, such as beach-themed accessories, seashell decor, and colorful accents.

While both coastal and beachy interior design styles share common elements, coastal design takes a broader approach by encompassing the entire coastal environment, while beachy design focuses specifically on the beach and aims to recreate a laid-back beach vacation atmosphere.

  • Thanks for your article. Gorgeous gorgeous images and wonderful advice as we move to a beachside apartment, know what I like but it’s overwhelming transitioning, well thats not strictly true as I already have a bit of coastal going on – thank you 😊Do you have a digital space you give individual advice, answer questions, look at photos etc? .I’m in New Zealand 🇳🇿 Happy Holidays

  • Yes, I am moving in this direction! Architecturally, our home is a Cape Cod style, though it is situated lakeside in the Midwest. The coastal style is one that fits our desire for a relaxed, casual atmosphere. It is the first style that resonated with my husband as well. Even though I tend to prefer lots more color, I’m going all in with texture instead. Thanks for you article! I love to see concepts picked apart to find their essential elements.

  • Hi Lindsay, great article! I have an old two unit beach rental. Have been fixing it up the past few years without a theme. Just starting doing what i thought was cool at the time. I was 19 when i started. The house looked like it was decorated by a teenage male because, well, it was. Over the years I slowly discovered coastal. Currently painting all the walls white with pops of a pastel teal. The house has always been very brightly colored(think florida keys) so i wanted to reflect that to create a more ‘fun coastal’. Now the house is pretty much like a coastal half modernized old cottage. I feel like theres so many elements. My guests always compliment my style so i guess im doing something right… I’m hoping the white paint will help pull everything together without looking stark.

  • Omg,if you live at the beach everyone is beachy decor just different price points.i would not like being locked into a area that determines how to decorate, like if you live mountains guess how your going to decorate lol. Not me midcentury modern in any house and not locked in to area only what I love.
