The Jeep Wrangler (TJ) is a second-generation off-road and sport utility vehicle, introduced in 1996. It features a Quadratec sailcloth soft top, half doors, and Duratrac tires. These tires are not loud like mud tires but can still be heard. However, the inside of the TJ gets a lot of vibrations, which can be classified into two main categories: outside the cabin and the hardtop and passenger floor above the cat. Heat is an enemy to sound control, and on a TJ, it’s the hardtop and passenger floor above the cat where sound mats may shift or come loose. Dynomat is a product used to reduce noise.
To make the TJ Wrangler quieter, check the condition of the top, both from the exterior and interior. Inspect for excessive material wear and tear, loose bolts, and ill-fitting parts. The noise levels can vary depending on the specific model and trim level of the Wrangler, as well as the type of tires and road surface. To make the TJ quieter on the highway, coat the underside and inside the wheel wells with a spray to reduce road noise. Jeep’s sound comparisons claim the JK Wrangler is 20 quieter than the TJ Wrangler, but the JL premium soft top is almost as quiet as the hard top.
In conclusion, the Jeep Wrangler has improved significantly in terms of interior comfort and convenience, with better-padded seats, a redesigned dashboard, and a more quiet interior.

How many decibels is a Jeep Wrangler?
The Jeep Wrangler 392 is a louder vehicle than other models due to its muffler, which is louder and sends the V-8’s song directly into the passenger cabin. The muffler is positioned just below the rear cargo floor, sending the V-8’s song directly into the passenger cabin. The headliner panel upgrade improved the interior sound environment and helped to dull wind noise, but still faced exhaust resonance and road noise through the floor. To reduce passenger fatigue on all-day highway drives, the interior volume was further reduced.
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 was Four Wheeler’s SUV of the Year Winner. The muffler is louder due to its placement just below the rear cargo floor, and the headliner panel upgrade helped to improve the sound environment.

Are Jeep Wranglers noisy inside?
Jeep Wrangler owners often face road noise issues, including engine and wind noise, which can create structural noise. To reduce these noises, there are several recommended soundproofing materials. One such option is Spectrum Spray Liquid Sound Deadener, which is easy to install and provides a solution for structural noise. Another option is Luxury Liner Pro, a thick layer of mass-loaded vinyl fused with closed cell foam that acts as an auto sound barrier to block airborne noise.
To apply Spectrum Spray Liquid Sound Deadener, spray it on the metal parts of the floor, cabin-side firewall, inner and outer door, wheel wells, and undercarriage. This waterproof, rustproof material is effective in stopping structural noise and can be applied in 2 or 3 coats, with around 1mm of thickness per coat. This method can be applied to both interior and exterior metal, making it a convenient and effective solution for reducing noise in Jeep Wranglers.
What does 99 decibels sound like?
Exhaust outlets in vehicles are now required to produce a maximum of 99dB (decibels) for legal use. This is achieved through a test conducted by licensed technicians using a “sound level meter”. The minimum noise level is 90dB, which is considered “Very Loud” by medical professionals. Other sources of noise include lawnmowers, blenders, hairdryers, and earphones. The LTO Motor Vehicle Inspection Center sets the maximum at 99dB, as vehicle exhausts cannot be louder than what the human ear perceives as music cranked up to 10 directly into their ears.
The test will be conducted with the engine revved up to 2000-2500rpm. Some exhausts become uncomfortably audible between 1500 and 2000rpm, and it is economically best to shift gears below 3000rpm for manual cars. If an exhaust screams too loud, it may indicate a problem in the hands.

These include installing headliners, adding window insulation, installing floor insulation, switching to street-focused tires, keeping factory doors and mirrors on, and removing gear and equipment to improve aerodynamics. While most sound-proofing methods are simple, some can be time-consuming. By following these tips, you can improve the overall driving experience and reduce the noise generated by your Jeep Wrangler.

I did this to my Jeep about three years ago. Huge difference! I also took the door panels off and was able to get quite a bit of sound deadning inside the door which made closing it also quieter. I suggest doubling or even trippling the amount of sound deadning material on the wheel wells, which is where most of the noise comes from. Especialy if you have off road tires.
That factory Loctite is no joke, depending what color they used. When I had to remove the body-mount bolts on my JT to install the Ace Engineering rock sliders, the front bolts requires a blowtorch…. they had used Red on the front, which usually the bolt snaps before the Loctite does if you don’t soften it up some. I have the same rock sliders in my garage for my 2023 JLU (when it finally gets back from the dealer service from hell) and luckily I have heard the JL uses blue Loctite on the body mount bolts. Either way though, I always break them loose by hand at first before I put the impact on them. Call me cautious.
I had the interior tub of my ’05 Rubicon Unlimited done by Line-X – the difference in sound deadening was amazing! As an added bonus, it made the interior pretty much indestructible. I think it’s a better alternative to sound mats which can trap moisture and lead to rusty floorboards. (Nice German Shepherd btw – I also had a black one I named “Rubicon”. I have a picture of my black Rubicon dog in my black Rubicon Jeep on the Rubicon Trail !)
We are having issues with heat coming from the front floor pans in our 97 TJ during the summer. PO put a bedliner type material on the inside, and we have no carpet. Would this help with the heat on the floorboards, or would you recommend something else for that? We will be putting a carpet kit in also. Thanks
I bought my first Jeep a few weeks ago. A 2017 4 Door JK. I put an OEM grill on it but I got sucked into a wormhole of jeep articles during the process. Haha had no idea this kind of stuff existed. Coming from the audio world though, these would do more for your heat and air than your sound. It will do something but it’s not going to be a life changer.
I mentioned that I’m doing a Memorial build for my brother who was killed in Combat, not knowing that they allegedly gave Military discounts and they never said a word. Listening to this article I never expected a discount but now that you mentioned it, one would think that they would have said something. Oh well.
Been there with a jlu….installed a custom sound stage and spent 15+ hours removing the interior and putting deadener on the tub, doors and added hotheads headliner. Only reduced the sound by 2-3 decibels…big waste of time and added 150lbs of weight…Definitely wouldn’t do it again to a wrangler.
I did this to my JKU. Threw down multiple layers of asphalt deadener on the body pan and doors. Also laid in a layer of closed cell foam. Made a HUGE difference (i run 37’s). I think the next most important part to sound deaden would be the doors. But they’re a lot more work so I haven’t done it. Plus the asphalt panels in the doors would add weight… Great article, thank you!
