I own a high end painting company also high end faux finishing company. Behr colors definitely change more over the years. When we do touch ups years later Behr has the most color change/oxidation. Sherwin williams Emerald and BM Aura are better paints, but yes, more expensive. But…. Labor and time is most expensive. So that extra cost, IF PREPPED CORRECTLY, is worth it if you’re getting 12 years vs 8 years. I’ve used Behr for a few years but had to stop when we would go back for touch ups or repairs and the colors always faded. S-W and BM are most pros go to. We only use Emerald and Shermax or big stretch caulking.
First off sherwin is a hydrophobic paint and only one on the market. It literally cleans itself unlike Aura. You can’t even comparing the two. Emerald is the most durable paint in the market. I’ve used all these and emerald as far as durability is the best. If you painting a house on the coast where salt is a factor definitely Emerald over aura.

Their lifetime coatings are prorated. The lifetime per SW is 8 years and is non-transferable with original sales receipt required for a material only warranty that is extremely difficult to collect . Installer error is largely to blame on most installs. Bang for the buck….Benjamin Moore Regal High build. A fantastic product based on the old MorGlo from years ago. Aura is the top of the line but you will get years of service with bridging capabilities on repaints and a high build product for new construction in a mid priced line. It works! Using your articles (tutorials) I gained sufficient confidence to repaint my kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and things turned out amazingly great. I bought a beginner HVLP sprayer(fuji semi-pro) and have zero regrets. Now I want to tackle my metal garrage doors with my HVLP sprayer/turbine. Both Homedepot and Behr Canada say that none of their paints can be thinned. Sherwin-W suggested their Latitude paint at about $140 a gallon (Canadian) It’s too costly for me. Do you have any advice or other recommendations… ? Thanks in advance.
After owning our “new built” for 18 years (not new anymore 😁), we hired a painting company and they used Sherwin Williams! We are happy with the paint after 2 years in the hot AZ sun ☀️. Great straightforward comparison ! One thing I love about SW is their LRV values are on the back of their paint cards. I’ve never found anyone in the paint department at Home Depot to even know what LRV means. Critical when painting plastic wood such as Azek and others. We use a lot in exterior trim areas of upper end homes in our company.
I remember about 1980 in college. I worked at Sears, Employee #13805, (store 1540/Lafayette Square/Speedway Indiana) who at the time, had the best paints to be honest. I still remember stock numbers… Let’s see 11469 our best paint roller and 33015… Weatherbeater white… Scarred for life I am… I always dreaded spring and all the over winter frozen latex paint coming in. “Something is wrong with it.” Yep, you stored in the unheated garage didn’t you. Ohh, that classic few inches of clear yellowish liquid then the 2/3rd of granulated color below… AND, fall when people would come in wanting exterior paint and the temps were falling into the freezing range. We would warn every one of them that if they put it on below around 45 degrees they would have problems in the future as it wouldn’t cure correctly, but hey they knew better. IN the spring they’d be coming in, “You sold me bad paint…” as it was coming off the wall outside after having not been cured and then freezing on the wall during the cold night… Sure it made it to Spring then came off. WE finally stopped selling it after a certain date… Oh and and the people dragging the “INterior” paint cans into the store after painting it on the outside, oh that Sunflower Yellow, I don’t know what hold it had on people… I coulda got it for you in weatherbeater but hey, that was twice as expensive (like 15 bucks in 1980 a gallon) vs that INterior paint. But, hey I painted this on my house and it washed off first storm. YEP, see where it says INterior, like INside, not outside?
Behr paint sucks. You get what you pay for. Stay away from prime and paint especially. Benjamin Moore is the best paint and best colors. You cannot pick a BM color and gave it mixed at Home Depot as Behr and get the same color. The undertones are different. For young families Sherwin W is ok. BM is the best hands down. Mine lasted 13 years and I only painted to change colors. Revere Pewter is a great neutral and is often chosen by designers.
I would really like to use a flat paint if possible. Is there a behr exterior paint that does better with a flat sheen? Would you really recommend not using a flat finish? I have a painted stucco home and I think flat would likely look better unless it looses a substantial amount of durability, durability is obviously important as well. Painting over 34 yrs and Marquee is the best for exterior paint projects if we talk about durability even when many painters saying that Behr paint products runs easily and to be honest i disagree with all these guys because we as painters should know how heavy a coat of paint can be applied with the sprayer machine so if you exceed that limit any paint will run so its about the painter the only thing i don’t like about Behr products is that you only can buy it at the Home Depot and we all know Home depot has the worst customer service and they will make you wait in purpose if you complain about waiting time, I complain a lot of times but i make a lot of noise so they can be expose them to customers and you force the store manager to do something about it, when someone don’t care about my waisted time waiting i feel that they are disrespecting me.
BEAR MARQUEE Has a ODOR that will not go away. DO NOT USE on doors that have a storm door over it because the smell will be trapped between the doors and you will smell it every time you open that door. That SMELL DOES NOT go away. NEVER USE It inside a garage. I am not sure about the Bear or the other paints having this bad odor smell.
I used to be an exclusive Ben Moore user, but the homeowner price of Regal Select is now $75/gallon, which is just too much. (And the staff would belly ache about custom colors.) The top of the line Diamond Vogel exterior paint is around $68/gallon, which is a lot, but under that $70 threshold. That’s now my go to. If any of the top manufacturers allowed homeowners to get pro pricing, they could own the DIY market.
Hello, I’ve been using sherwin Williams emerald and emerald urethane on a couple bedrooms. Is the exterior version crap? What are the differences between emerald exterior and the regal select exterior that you have noticed? Also have you used the sw porch and floor paint for exterior wood and or concrete steps ? I have a few different projects that iam going to be doing and I started with sherwin Williams based on ur emerald interior and trim paint reviews. Would Moore Gard still be best for 50’s block home in South West florida? Lots of rain and intense sun. The current paint that is on the house is peeling and kind of dusty underneath. When spraying is not an option, What would you use for the smooth metal exterior front door and door trim and couple new smooth columns? Benjamin Moore doesn’t have anything like emerald urethane. Does soft gloss leave brush lines and roller texture on smooth surfaces? On second floor it doesn’t matter but on front entry I see a lot of brush lines and texture on new columns from even the smoothest roller. Wish Benjamin Moore would have a exterior trim enamel like emerald urethane or behr hybrid trim enamel.
Im in a rush, im going to watch this at lunch, but does he cover oil based v latex? Im in an historic district and oil for exteriors is “the right thing to do.” So are all of its good qualities not as desirable as water soluble clean up? What am I missing? So appreciative of your review of these two BM products. I used the Regal “Low Lustre” on my roll up garage door and was happy with the egg shell type finish. Also liked this product since the egg shell type finish didn’t show brush marks too extensively. I used the Regal “Soft Gloss” on two flat steel exterior doors wanting a slightly glossier finish. Well, I was very unhappy with this product’s leveling capability. Painted these doors in my garage out of the sun with minimal breeze. Approximately 70*. I applied a moderate coat with the door in a horizontal position with a 3/8″ nap roller then once the surface was covered I used the weight of the 3″ paint brush immediately to knock down the roller “nubs”. Paint was still very wet. When it dried, you could see the brush marks. This product performs nothing like BM Advance.
Again…not sure if you pay attention to old articles, but had a quick inquiry so figured I’d give it a shot. I’m going to repaint my mother’s carport walls and ceilings, which are white…and from 1972. 🙂 A bit of peeling paint above a dryer vent, and there are a few cracked spots along the walls, but otherwise I think all I need to do to prep it is wash the walls down. Had gone by SW before I tripped across this article and was pretty well convinced to go with their “Duration” white, with extra white tint and a hint of black thrown in. After perusal this vid went to the closest BM store…and ended up dealing with a guy who seemed a bit clueless. Finally figured out I’d have to pick a specific shade of white in the Lustre for the carport walls. Their pricing is about $10 more per gallon than the SW Duration. Since this is exterior paint that won’t be sitting in the sun, do you suspect that SW Duration would work fine? The folks at the SW store were very helpful in running through all the options, and offered cogent explanations why of the choices they had available they’d suggest Duration for this job. But after perusal your article, I’m a bit concerned this may have been one of the ones you used before and determined didn’t work long-term. Any insight you care to offer would be appreciated.
I just use SW rain refresh for my porch railing/spindles and super deck for the floors. The rain refresh was pretty pricy but was 35% off so $70/gallon. I really love it so far. My main concern is longevity on the deck. I goofed and primed everything and had to strip and sand the wood. Took me a month to complete everything but happy with the results (just don’t look under the stairs)
