What Is A Bridge Shelf Closet By Design?

Bridge shelves are a versatile storage solution that connect two perpendicular walls, creating a “bridge” of storage space between them. They not only add storage capacity but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your closet. Custom closet design is a time-consuming process, but it can be achieved by assessing your storage needs and creating an efficient wardrobe.

One of the best closet designs incorporates elements that maximize space and improve functionality, making it possible to create a more organized and efficient storage solution. To convert a spare room into a walk-in closet, clear everything out and use the corner bridge shelf to connect units in your closet for a full wraparound look.

How deep are closets by design shelves?

Reach-in closets and wardrobes are designed for quick functionality, allowing quick access to essential items without having to search for them in the depths of an overly deep shelf. The ideal depth for a 26-inch deep closet is 10 to 12 inches, while 12 to 14 inches can be manageable for a closet over 28 inches deep. To optimize deep reach-in and wardrobe closet shelves, repurpose old shoe boxes as seasonal storage solutions.

This allows for the storage of swim trunks and winter scarves when they are out of season, making room for other storage areas. Additionally, it serves as a “Back Stop” to prevent loose items from migrating too far back. Label the boxes with a removable tab to help find what you need when the seasons change.

What makes a closet a closet?

A closet is a small room or chamber used for storage, either natural or artificial, and is often considered a necessary feature in a bedroom. However, there is no universally accepted standard that requires a closet in a bedroom. In Minnesota, there is no requirement in the Minnesota State Building Code, no single municipality, or the Minneapolis Housing Maintenance Code to have a closet. The Minneapolis Truth-In-Sale of Housing Evaluator Guidelines even state that a closet is not required. This contradicts the universally accepted de facto standard that a closet is necessary for a bedroom. Home inspectors often ask about this issue, but it is not a concern in Minnesota.

  • It seems an awful lot of hardwork. I’d just go to a furniture thrift shop. By the time youve paid out for the cubes, power tool, extra pieces of wood and varnish you may as well purchase a solid second hand piece and polish it. But I guess if you love mdf storage, and have plenty of time n money to spare, go right ahead! ❤

  • For all the time and money spent trying to make the Walmart / closet maid shelves into new items one would have been better off buying ikea that came as the actual ready made piece of furniture needed. I found it obvious this article was made to imitate ikea kallax “hacks”. I agree with many other commenters, goodwill, yard sales, thrift stores much better places to buy real wood furniture that can be modified to make a quality new piece of furniture. Plywood and building supplies are very expensive now.

  • I have many of these sawdust storage shelves that saved me when I moved into 1/3 of the space I used to live in. They were quick, simple, and absorbed almost all of my work and kitchen things. The stacks of cardboard moving boxes were out of the middle of my living room. Now, for reuse, recycle and repurpose. Thank you

  • My daughter used six of these on their side to raise her full bed in her dorm for storage. Not only does she have the cubbies filled but the space in the middle holds all her larger bulky items and suitcases. She left openings on two sides for access. She used a single 4 cubby above her headboard for storage. Then she created a desk by putting an old core door across them using the door knob hole for wires. It’s beautiful in her dorm . Holds everything she needs and cost $120 dollars total.

  • My husband made shelves in our closets with these types of shelves. I found a warehouse that was selling these for 10 bucks new in the box, We purchased 6 of them and Taaa daaaa built in shelves in my walk in closet and all our other closets 😊 We topped it off with some trim pieces we have and they look like they came in the house this way ❤

  • We don’t own some of these tools or a garage to fit them. Our house is built on a slab. I’d make these because they’d be good storage for my fabric and sewing accessories. With a taller one i could keep yarn, knitting needles, chrochet needles, and other and other things. They don’t take a big footprint, i can put on a single wall, and have everything organized. I’d probably screw them together for stability, at least she has ideas and shares them. 👍
