Ivy Style, a fashion style inspired by leisure activities in the UK and northeastern US, incorporated sportswear and traditional British country clothing into everyday wear. Preppy fashions emerged as a more casual, youthful interpretation of Ivy League style, featuring rugby shirts and boat shoes. Retailers like L. L. Bean and Eddie Bauer contributed to the development of preppy style, with L. L. Bean being described as “nothing less than Prep mecca” and Orvis being the biggest seller of the rugged New England Prep look.
By the 1980s, mass marketing of brands like Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Daniel Cremieux, and Izod brought a resurgence of Ivy and preppy styles into the mainstream. For women, preppy-influenced fashions emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, led by designers like Perry Ellis and Lilly Pulitzer, influenced by Oleg Cassini, and popularized by female students at the Seven Sisters Colleges. Classic ensembles of the 1960s and 1970s included tailored skirt suits, low heels, wrap dresses, shift dresses, silk or cotton blouses, and refined jewelry, often featuring elements drawn from typical preppy styles like nautical stripes, pastel colors, or equestrian details.
What colors are preppy?
The preppy style is characterized by its distinct color palette and patterns, often featuring blue, light blue, green, yellow, white, and black. Plaid, checks, stripes, and tweed are the main patterns used in the aesthetic, often paired with chinos or skirts in mini, midi, and maxi lengths. For a playful twist, polka dots and leopard printed accessories like scarves and handbags are recommended. Gingham checks, a favorite for spring and summer, are incorporated into sundresses and button-down shirts, infusing preppy fashion with a fresh, youthful vibe.
To elevate your wardrobe game, consider a classic ensemble with a crisp white button-down shirt, navy blazer, tailored khaki pants, sleek loafers, or flirty Mary Jane shoes. Statement pieces like Burberry scarves or chic Balenciaga tote bags can further elevate your look. The destination of preppy style remains the same: impeccable tailoring, attention to detail, eternal elegance, and infusing it with a contemporary twist.

📹 Interior Design: How To Mix Traditional And Modern Decor
Designer Allison Willson of Sarah Richardson Design discusses how she renovated her home for her young family. See how she …
What I love is that fire place as the heart of the room with that gorgeous rug! Its just so soothing to the eyes… I can imagine myself grabbing a giant pillow in front of that fire place reading a book sipping tea at night:) for a change there’s no tv over the fire place which I think allows beauty to take over. She really does have great taste for designing 👌♥️😘
I love her choice of color. It’s warm, sophisticated and tasteful. She chooses a blondes colors, grey and light pink. I read that grey maximizes the light for a home in the northern hemisphere, where some times of the year can get dark. Although, where I live these homes would be many millions of dollars to buy and probably another million more to renovate and furnish. Spectacular home and taste, just a little hard to relate to, for the layperson…
I noticed ALL of her gold accents from kitchen cabinet hardware to lamps and decorative pieces throughout the home. The golden accent trend of today’s home fashion collections was alive and well in this home feature. It sure is a welcomed change from the predominant chromes and nickel finishes inundating the fixtures we otherwise must choose from. Love the golds SO much more.
Loved the overall effect, and her fondness for light gray is exactly the element of continuity running throughout the housel My real pet peeve is the bright brass fixtures in the kitchen–I think the warm soft gray tones of brushed nickel–or for some sparkle, polished nickel or chrome would have looked just as vintage and actually worked with the palette better. And yes, she’s gonna regret having children & white furniture.
I have a small house old I am changed my countertop and backsplash hood and sink faucet and kitchen color but not the orange oak cabinets it’s not in my budget right now my cabinet is orange oak color real wood and my floor is also the same color as cabinet and real wood so I already put the black quartz countertop with a white thick little line in it and I chose the backsplash white glass mosaic tile and little grey line in there same style as countertop I will remove the cabinet over my hood and I m putting modern style hood so right now I have off white walls I am thinking for pure white for the ceiling and the same color for the walls can you please give advice I like to see my house contemporary style but my house is 100 years old single-family house. I appreciate your work and love your work I really wish you suggest me please I forget to mention my ceiling is also very low 7 feet high only I have a ceiling with beams please help me with what paint color for the wall and ceiling I can choose tomorrow I have to buy paint
Amazing home. I keep perusal this article for ideas. I love how you didn’t do the only one or two accent color throughout the whole home rule…so boring to have the same accent color throughout the house. Much more prefer using lots of neutrals and adding a little color in each room and sticking to that.
Beautiful home! Question… She mentioned that she did not use white carpet because she didn’t think they were practical. But she did use very light colored upholstery pieces, I am decorating my house now, and it seems the far majority of inspirational designer rooms use white sofas and chairs. Don’t you have to worry about them showing dirt and stains?
One of the few homes in the website I LOVE! Traditional style is definitely my jam and there are way to update it for a modern lifestyle while still retaining all the classic features that make it timeless. I especially like that she highlighted the vintage details of the house, although I do wish she had more natural wood tones. That’s probably the only difference I would make, is less painted furniture and more natural stained wood pieces to add more character. The kitchen looks fairly classic too, I love that there’s no impractical vessel sinks!
I always wanted an older house. And last year I bought a 1929 Tudor style home. Its been more work and money then I ever imagined. Expect to have to replace electrical wires, fix broken fireplaces, replace windows, replace or fix leaky roofs, put in new insulation, replace plumbing (especially on 3rd floors) and fix radiators.
Hi! I was just wondering what sort of GCSE/classes you would recommend for becoming an interior designer. I’m not sure if that’s what you call them or the education is different in America but I live in the UK and I want to study interior design when I’m older. I was told by various research to do Art defiantly, Technology and Design, a science (preferably physics) and a social science like sociology cause I need to know how people think e.g. if I was decorating a room for them. I love art and I could do tech no problem. There is no textiles class but craft is an option but it is said to be a rip off of technology in my school. I am very bad at science but I have the option to do single award science which is a class of the three biology, chemistry and physics. Reading up on sociology I was very interested in it but my school might not be running it this year. So I was hoping you could give me some advice on which GCSEs would be good and what you needed to become an interior designer (house and home). I am thinking of choosing Art, Technology and Design, Single award science, History and English Literature for my five GCSE options 🙂 thanks
For over a year, I have Googled, You Tubed and Pinterest’ed to no end trying to find decor inspiration for my home. Nothing has grabbed hold of me…tapped me on the shoulder, made me give a double-take but that’s about it. Getting ready for bed and thought, let’s browse one more time. I searched modern traditional home decor..NEVER even thought of putting those 2 words together but I’m SO GLAD I did. Your article pops up. I clicked on it but never expected to see such a amazing home. EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of this home spoke to my soul! This is what I’ve been searching for. Absolute masterpiece! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
gorgeous! love the mix. two questions tho: 1. what type of greenery does she have on the kitchen/dining table?? it’s oversized and lovely and I want some just like it. 2. the pic above the fireplace in the den.. can somebody please tell me where that picture is from and/or who the artist is?? it’s stunning!!
Love white, mirrors…especially venetians, and chandeliers. I’m an artist so I do my own unique tweaks…which vary. I have my bedroom in silver mirrored furniture I refurbished with a white leather ” tully” bed. I added a canopy and framed a flower wall in a white ornate frame I found which I painted. ….as my ” backdrop.
Misleading title, not a how-to but a home tour. Lovely home. Tips from article that I could gather: consider monotone furniture with a loud rug, consider mixing in vintage pieces of good quality that have character, be willing to make mistakes and change things out, choose livable items that can handle damage, mixing many different styles can work – traditional, modern, contemporary can mix but not always, grey is soothing
I don’t see how a guy could feel genuinely comfortable there. It’s just too cutsie and delicate in every room. I expect Marilyn Monroe or ZSA ZSA Gabor would trick out their homes in that style. And where’s the poodle? Instead of concentrating only on combining new with old she could have added to the mix combining the masculine with the feminine. But the hubby approved and there endeth the tale.
beautiful but I’d be scared to death to even sit down!!! I want to feel COMFORTABLE and not worry if a book is not straight…I know they spruce it up before filming so I want to see it at 7pm when REAL people are perusal TV and eating a real meal, Dirty dishes in the sink, etc….. Ad also LOVE the red rug room. my favorite….
I wonder if she used to be a nurse, if magnolia is a cliche then doing everything white is possibly worse. I couldn’t settle in a sitting room in such an antiseptic atmosphere. I think for bathrooms and kitchens, for cleanliness, white is understandable, but to obliterate any warmth, and not having anywhere cosy would feel uncomfortable. I think this is a classic case of fashion over function – which is a fail in my eyes.
