Ways To Stop An External Steel Door From Scuffing The Floor?

This video provides a step-by-step guide on fixing bottom-rubbing metal doors. The first step is to identify the cause of the door rubbing at the bottom. If sagging hinges are the culprit, tightening them may be the solution. Adjusting the hinges can solve most problems for any type of door.

Additionally, address uneven floors by sanding or trimming the door. To fix a door that is sticky, run a piece of paper at the bottom of the door to identify where it is sticky. If the door is not sagging or too large, wood expansion issues may be the root cause.

To fix a sagging or sticking door without removing the door, follow these steps:

  1. Unscrew the top hinge from the door frame. Remove any shims between the hinge plate and door frame. Reattach the hinge and test the door. Replace the screws.

  2. Tighten the screws in the top hinge on the door and frame. Replace stripped hinge screws with longer screws that are longer.

  3. Widen the frame enough so the door closes easily. If the door is still scraping the floor, use a 1mm shim to lift it slightly. If the door is still scraping badly after that, take the door between the cauls to straighten out the bend.

  4. Prepare two cauls and clamp the door between them to straighten out the bend. Use a long 3/4″ auger bit to drill a straight hole at least 14 inches long.

  5. Tighten the screws in the hinges if they feel loose. Over time, the screws in your hinges might come loose and cause your door to sag.
