I vaguely remember this show, but I do remember the home improvement episode with Dave and Jim. Had no idea that this was a spin-off of home improvement though. There were just way too many sitcoms back in the 90’s that followed the same formula. I do however find myself perusal a lot of these 90’s sitcoms weather they’re good or bad mainly for nostalgia. Another failed sitcom that I actually was rooting for was Lush Life with Karyn parsons, only lasted 4 episodes and 3 unaired episodes.
Chappelle mentioned how bad this show was in one of his routines and I had no frame of reference for it. He mentioned it was called “Buddies” and he mentioned Jim Bruer but didn’t mention the guy who replaced Bruer. I did not remember this show at all. After seeing this article, Dave wasn’t kidding. That show was really bad lol. See kids, the 90s weren’t perfect at all haha!

You should do one for the spin-off of Amazing Stories, The Family Dog. It was aired in the early 90’s, produced by Spielberg. And a little known director by the name of Tim Burton and his new friend Danny Elfman, who does the music. He’s known in the Southern California area during the late 70’s, 80’s, performing with his band, Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. Has done over 100 scores for movies and most recently performed an incredible set at Coachella this year. Check it out. It’s pretty good.
It just shows chemistry is very important. That show failed because they were to ignorant to see the chemistry between Dave and Jim. I’m sure they seen it when Dave and Jim made Half Baked cause that movie was hilarious. I’ve never seen an episode of this show but just looking at the clips it screams 90’s ABC sitcom. People originally thought that Dave a had some sort of nervous breakdown when he abruptly walked away from his Chappelle’s Show but that was not what happened. Never knew about this show. It doesn’t look bad going off the clips shown here. How many people even knew who Dave Chappelle was in the 90s to know his particular style of comedy and whether or not this show would suit it? For all they knew he was just some guy. So there probably wouldn’t be any preconceived notions going in.
I heard about this show, but knew nothing about it other than Dave was on it. Christopher Gartner was great in Tremors 2. I had no idea he was in this. I also remember that episode of Home Improvement. I had no idea it was a backdoor pilot. For the record, I actually think Home Improvement is genuinely funny after the first couple seasons.
I remember perusal that episode of Home Improvement when it aired, but I have absolutely no recollection of Dave or Jim being in it. Obviously I didn’t know who they were back then, but it’s funny how odd they both seem as a fit for a show like that in hindsight. I had no idea ABC was interested in Dave back then, either.
He’s a good one. I’m white I had a black friend who looked like Dave. My Filipino friend and I called him Dave because we both LOVED Dave for Ahchoo. Our friend said Dave Chappell is funny. haha, I actually still have a copy of my local TV guide from when this show debuted, and they were on the cover. I was like 9 and was deeply obsessed with the movie Jurassic Park, and that was the week it debuted on tv. later on when Half Baked came out (and the DC Show) I started getting into Dave as a comedian, and as a result I ended up keeping the TV guide to show people, even after purging all the other JP crap I’d accumulated (PS: the TV guide cover actually shows Jim Breuer, despite his having been recast)
I thought home improvement was filmed in front of an audience? I mean I’m not that into it, but it seemed like it. Personally, it would’ve been so badass with those two having their own show. The two worst backdoor pilot episodes in TV history were the final two episodes of Green Acres titled “Hawaiian Honeymoon” and “The Ex-Secretary” these were so bad so awful so horrible it’s amazing CBS aired these episodes they are atrocious in every way. And there was also a “Horshack” backdoor pilot episode on Welcome Back Kotter the whole episode was Arnold’s family and it was terrible. Most backdoor pilot episodes are epic failures.

Joe Rogan spoke about this very thing on Flagrant 2 podcast. He said in the early and mid nineties, in the comic circuit everyone was racing to get a sitcom show and eventually get the Tonight Show or the Late Show… After Jerry (Seinfeld) and Paul Riser (Mad About You), a lot of rising stand up comedians were getting pilot deals from networks, regardless of how good or bad the premise for the show was. Networks just wanted their fan bases to tune in.
Both Chappelle, and Breuer were young at the time. Still finding their lane’s. They probably lost their shit when they got to appear on the most popular show in U.S. at the time. Then jumped through their own asshole when they got offered their own show. But luckly neither one of them could act. In the end we got to see the “Phoenix” Dave Chappelle rise from the ashes. Transformed into one of the greatest philosophers of our time.

Next, Dave goes on to clown country music. They seem to dish it out on both sides, this article makes it seem like there were only one sided stereotypes. Still, Jim shouldnt have gotten the boot.
I’ve seen Half-Baked at least 100 times, and yet I cannot ever remember the name of the movie. If I try to remember it in a couple of hours I will not be able to tell anyone what it’s called. I was high every time I watched it, but even when thinking about it sober like now, I can’t remember it unless it’s brought up
Home Improvement was a big ratings success back in the day and now almost nobody gives a crap about it anymore. There doesn’t even really seem to be the same nostalgic reverence for it that you see for many other shows from that era. And that’s for the best, because in retrospect it was really lame and completely sucked.
Most of the older ledgends will not take on any new sitcoms because they wanted to go out on a good point, you know ledgends the critics an culture would chew them out now .I am not anti cancell culture i think some talentless ppl rely on shock value an that excuse too much, but i would love to see chapelle, tim, eddie an edfie griffin etc in an updated sitcom for these times.
The title is very misleading despite “the tagline” on a dvd that Chappelle most assuredly had nothing to do with. He has been completely open about how how many times he’s bombed onstage. He just said the show sucked. He didn’t say he regrets it. He pulled his original costar back into the limelight 2 years later to make another movie that is arguably both terrible and great lol
