As a late 80’s child, I was blessed to be brought up with this music. I’ve loved it all my life and this is 1 of my favourites. Seeing Lionel Richie live was 1 of the best nights of my life, I highly recommend 😊 If people are new to his music, he has many greats but “penny lover” is also fantastic ❤
This song brings me to tears, it was our song. He’s been gone long years now, and our children have grown up and have families of their own. Our oldest looks so much like his dad that it’s like looking at a photograph of him when he was younger. Lionel’s voice is so rich, so full of longing that it pulls these memories right out of me, and the tears flow again. God this hits so close to home. Takes me back to my first job in civil engineering and the blokes working that contract on a tunnel under the rivers 7 and Y great bunch of blokes some real character’s the sort you only meet once in a lifetime and would think mostly passed on as i was the youngest on that contract never forgotten and every time i hear this song i’m transported back to those days still live in the same area and very often walk past that tunnel head so many good years employed there.
The day my stepfather handed down his vinyl collection to me was the day I fell in love with Thin Lizzy. Hidden in the crates of wax was a poster of Phil donning a Sid Vicious button. I grew up on punk rock in the 80’s and didn’t really care for the Pistols at the time, but when I saw that poster, I knew I had to listen to the Thin Lizzy wax right away and I’m glad I did. Hell! Born and raised in Limerick ireland my oldest brother Frank would listen to Thin Lizzy what a great band loved Phil Lynott. I saw Thin Lizzy as the show opening band for Queen back on February, 10, 1977 in Providence, Rhode Island when I was 15 years old. Brian Robertson had suffered a hand injury in a bar fight and had to sit out the US leg of the tour with Gary More taking his place. Thin Lizzy put on a spectular show on that night that every time I hear the songs they played such as Whiskey In The Jar it takes i’m 15 years old agin and at the concert!
Classic Thin Lizzy. However, (at least for me), the pinnacle of this whole song is castrated in this version. The 2nd half of Eric Bell’s guitar solo – the crescendo, is edited out. I know single version’s of songs need cuts, but what a fuckin’ lousy decision to cut THAT part out! Whoever decided that back in the day cut the balls out of the song.
