A bottle in lighting design refers to a glass or plastic enclosure that houses the light source and other components of a lighting fixture. It describes the impression of brightness on the surface and depends on the degree of reflection (color and temperature). A well-planned lighting can enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and mood of a room, making it essential for architects, interior designers, and homeowners alike.
Lamps are transparent or translucent glass housings containing filament and/or gas that produce light when voltage is applied. Lighting in a bottle is a battery that won’t die, providing infinite electricity based upon the power of each lightning bottle. A simple device is a transparent two-liter bottle filled with water plus a little bleach to inhibit algal growth and fitted into a hole in a roof.
A hybrid Moser bottle (HMB) is a type of lighting design that consists of a clear plastic bottle, some water, and a splash of bleach. The seven lights are oriented towards the chapel’s roof tectonics, while the stone box represents the brutal expression of the building. Solid-state lighting means there’s no physical reaction creating light, unlike an incandescent bulb or fluorescent plasma.
In summary, lighting terminology can be complex and requires understanding to create effective lighting designs. A glossary of terms such as “lamp”, “bulb”, “light bulb”, and “beer bottle” can help decipher the jargon and provide a better understanding of lighting concepts.

Suggestion: don’t get stuck in dumb sniping at people who think outside the box. Illac Diaz has devised a wonderful eco friendly solution to the problem of lack of electricity in many regions. He has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands in the developing world. Kids can read and do homework, mothers can cook and do chores, people are safer in their homes, there are far less accidental fires. Hey, sounds good to me. You naysayers – y’all got a better idea?
solving problems themselves with materials at hand = independence and growth and evolution of new ideas…this is how it should be… people solving problems at the micro-level can become a macro-level solution free of giant corporate influence…This is like 150 years ago here, when people were inventing things because they needed to…this is good… this is organic
In my opinion, it doesn’t matter who discovered or invented it. What matters most, it is shared to our less fortunate “kababayan” that might help them a little bit on their daily lives on such living condition. I hope our government can do more to improve their situation not only with them in the slums but to all Filipinos. (not mentioning corruption, etc.)
when i read the comments here it becomes very obvious that many of you have no idea how some people live, skylights and windows are expensive and let in heat and often these places dont have outside walls. they cover many areas completely to keep heat out. they dont have access to materials like somewhere like the US has either.
I don’t understand….isn’t this just a plastic bottle with a little bleach in it hanging from the ceiling? How is this an amazing or marvelous creation? I’m not being rude but why is this being treated like some ‘marvelous design’ or ground-breaking design? Its a bottle with water……. why does anyone need somebody else to make these for them any person could make this on their own.

Or you could cut out a window in your shack. Wouldn’t that be better and leak less in the rain? And give more control over ventilation? Even the simplest window of a piece of wood raised up with a diagonal support? I’m not understanding this at all. Who even needs a window in the middle of the day? Are they living underground? What they need to work on in pure water: The answer is probably a solar still on the roof.
