Spray Painting Outdoor Light Fixtures: A Guide?

This DIY guide provides a step-by-step procedure for painting outdoor light fixtures with spray paint. The process involves spraying several coats of exterior paint for metal, reassembling the fixture, attaching wires, and screwing it to the electrical box. Turning the power back on and testing the fixture’s functionality are essential steps in this process.

To restore faded outdoor light fixtures using spray paint, you need rag and soapy water, painter’s tape, and a low-sheen paint. To avoid stains, use a damp cloth to clean the fixture before painting. If you want a professional look, use a high-sheen paint.

To apply the paint, hold the can about 8 to 12 inches away from the fixture and spray. Before painting, remove the fixtures or mask around them, clean them, remove any paint or rust, apply primer, apply topcoat, and finish up/reinstall fixtures. Use duct tape to hold the pieces together and spray the first coat from about a foot away.

A second coat should be applied, covering every surface and letting it dry overnight. The full tutorial for spray-painting outdoor lights is provided, but the video above shows how to mask outdoor light fixtures, strip paint and rust, clean the unit, and apply prime paint.

In summary, spray painting outdoor light fixtures is a cost-effective and easy way to update and personalize the appearance of your outdoor space without breaking the bank.

Do I need to sand my metal every time I spray paint?

Sanding metal is crucial after cleaning to create a rough surface, as unsanded metal is more susceptible to peeling or flaking. If prepping painted metal, use 120 grit sandpaper to remove damaged paint. For painted metal in good condition, use 240 grit sandpaper to roughen the surface. If there is rust, use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove as much as possible, ensuring the surface is level. Specialist paint can prevent further rusting, but textured sections may still be present.

To paint brass light fixtures, turn off the power, remove the screws, use an electrical tester, remove wire nuts and wires, disassemble the fixture, and remove glass panes. Clean the fixtures with denatured alcohol, sand with steel wool, and clean again. Cover any parts with painter’s tape. Spray exterior paint for metal, reassemble the fixture, attach wires, and screw it to the electrical box. Turn the power back on and test the fixture to ensure it works properly.

Repainting brass light fixtures is a quick and inexpensive way to revive them, as they weather quickly out in the elements. Loosen wire nuts connecting the fixture’s wiring to the house wiring and replace them to cover bare ends.

To prepare metal surfaces for paint, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the surface with mineral spirits to remove grease and apply a rust-inhibitive primer. For painted surfaces, remove dust with a clean, dry cloth, de-gloss the surface with light sanding, and wipe with mineral spirits.
  2. Remove loose and peeling paint by hand wire brushing, sanding, or scraping. Power tool cleaning can help remove paint quickly and easily, but it can polish metal surfaces, potentially causing paint-adhesion problems.
  3. Remove rust by using a brush to clean off loose rust, sand the area, and apply a high-quality rust-inhibitive primer (e. g. Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer).
  4. Repair small holes and dents by sanding the area until bare metal and wiping with a degreaser mixed with mineral spirits. For small holes, inject an appropriate epoxy-based composite directly into the hole and/or dent, while for larger holes, apply epoxy filler to the edge of the hole, cut a piece of fiberglass mesh approximately one inch larger than the hole, and press it into the filler.
  5. Prime the surface by considering the type of metal to be coated, desired appearance, performance requirements, and environmental conditions. Professionals recommend two types of metal primers: rust converters and galvanized metal primers. A galvanized primer is appropriate for metals like aluminum that prevent paint from adhering to the surface. Iron oxide and zinc chromate primers can also be used on most metal surfaces, including interior and exterior iron and steel.
  6. Prime immediately after cleaning to prevent dust or dirt accumulation and flash rust from forming. How do you get spray paint to stay on metal?

Rust is a common issue on metal surfaces, and it’s crucial to remove any existing rust with sandpaper or a wire brush before painting. Wrought iron, steel, and cast-iron surfaces are more susceptible to rust, and ferrous metals with iron content can be tested by comparing their response to a magnet. Rust Tough Primer can be used as a base coat for maximum rust protection. Nonferrous metals, such as copper, bronze, brass, aluminum, tin, and precious metals like silver, platinum, and gold, don’t require priming.

  • PLEASE get rid of that music, especially the loud blasts of music when you stop talking. I have to use headphones and the loud blast if you dare stop talking for half of a second is awful. The segments are good enough, we don’t need to be musically entertained at the same time. It’s a shame, because they’re good little articles, but I’m ready to give up on this series because of that music.
