Methods For Sealing Clay Pots’ Interiors?

To create an appropriate moisture barrier for clay pots, use a penetrating sealer like boiled linseed oil, which is easily absorbed by porous materials like clay. This sealant acts as a protective barrier against water damage and prevents moisture from seeping through the porous clay material. There are various natural and non-toxic synthetic sealers available for both inside and outside the terra-cotta clay pot.

One effective method involves applying a layer of tung oil, Thompson’s water seal, or acrylic floor polish to the interior of the pottery to ensure a barrier against moisture. To seal a clay cooking pot, choose a natural sealant like beeswax or plant-based oil, clean the pot thoroughly, apply the sealant to both the interior and exterior, and allow it to dry for a day. Optionally, cure the sealant in.

Changes in temperature, freezing rain, snowfall, etcetera can create cracking as clay wants to expand. Leaking water can leave water rings on tables. Place terracotta pots before painting on a drop cloth or the like, or use thick plastic bags for the outside. If sealing the inside, use spray acrylic sealer/finisher made by Americana.

To lightly sand the pots and drip trays, lightly sand the outside and apply a non-yellowing clear sealer, two coats. AFM DynoSeal is a non-toxic waterproof sealant used on the inside of planters and pots. For a tough thick coating, shake the can of sealant and apply an even, light coat to the inside of the pot.

In summary, sealing your terra-cotta pots is essential for prolonging their lifespan and optimizing plants’ hydration.

  • @Paul. If you are using Terracotta pots because they ate cheaper than Concrete pots, make your own Concrete pots. They are simple to make, and you can make them tiny, or any size you desire. It feels great making your own pots. The only drawback is the weight of larger pots! Sealing the pots is so very important. Depending on the size, I would smaller pots Two coats. Larger pots Three coats.I hope this helps?!
