To replace a damaged door threshold, measure the length, width, and thickness of the old threshold and have a replacement with a similar profile on hand. The new threshold should be an inch or two longer than the distance between the door casing’s outside edge. Remove the existing threshold from your door and cut it with a back saw or a reciprocating saw. For metal thresholds, use tin snips and a saw equipped with a metal-cutting blade. Dislodge the threshold pieces with a pry bar.
To get an exact fit on a new threshold, use a template to transfer the jamb’s contours to the ends of the threshold, where matching contours must be cut. Make templates from 1/4-inch-thick hardboard. For exterior door thresholds, a single straight cut will usually suffice, while for interior door thresholds, you may need to notch out for trim.
Gather the necessary tools, such as a pry bar, a saw, a plywood (fine tooth) blade, or a Mitre saw. Work slow as you cut to avoid getting hot, and select a blade suitable for cutting the new threshold. Measure the doorway to ensure a good fit, cut the new threshold to size using a hacksaw, and clean the area of debris or remaining caulk.
Cut back the old exterior door threshold using a reciprocating saw, or use a metal-cutting saw for small incisions. Fit a wood-cutting blade into a reciprocating saw and slice across the wood in two places, about 10 inches from the old threshold.
