Azimuths are horizontal angles measured clockwise from North and can range from 0° to 360°. They can be referenced to true North, magnetic North, or an azimuth taken from plans. Azimuths can also be forward or backward.
Azimuths and bearings are used to represent or locate a line with respect to a meridian. The important features of azimuth and bearing in surveying include their comparison. To calculate the azimuth, one must determine the Magnetic Declination and adjust the declination reading to correspond with that number. Methods for expressing plane angles include sexagesimal, centesimal, radians, and milliradians.
The formula to calculate the angle depends on which of the azimuths (first or second line) is bigger and if the difference between both is more than 180°. The formula is as follows: azimuths are full 360°.
To calculate the azimuth from latitude and longitude, compute x = sinΔλ × cosϕ₂, where Δλ = λ₂ – λ₁ is the difference in longitudes. New Az = (Previous Az + 180°00′) + Angle.
For a loop traverse meeting conditions, the angle between two lines of sight is equal to 360 minus the difference between their azimuths. There are two ways to determine an azimuth: using a map to determine a grid azimuth or a compass to determine a magnetic azimuth.
