Another option is the E-collar, which can be made by stuffing a tube sock with plastic bags and securing the ends with safety pins.

Another DIY cat cone project is the Cat and the Plate, which requires minimal materials like a paper plate, scissors, and stapler. The cone can be adjusted to fit two fingers between the cat’s neck and the plate.

  • thank you so much for this, my vet didn’t give my girl a cone, and i tried a baby onesie but it only lasted a night before she started licking her incision and scratched all over my hands when i tried to put it back on but now she seems so unbothered with the plate and is sleeping just fine, this made me less stressed thank you <3

  • This is a great idea of yours,,,we had a stray 2 to 3 month old kitten come to our back garden door, as my son noticed her,,,she had a very nasty but old open wound under her belly, that was exposed, she was starving hungry, and one cheese slice that I gave her in little bits was gone in seconds,, till my son got her a pouch of food,,I made an appointment with my vet,, and she was kept in over night and had to have surgery, to close the wound, she came back home and the next day was at the vet again 3 times in all for tearing out the stiches and stapples,, the 3rd time it was open alot more, again over night,,, so she came home an hour ago,,my husband got a set of 3 baby grows so I cut off the two sleeves that were narrow, and near the end where it closes where the poppers are I made a hole for her tail to go through,, as a recovery jacket,,I even searched on you tube for help in preventing cats from opening their stiches but nothing, just cats getting stitches,, until I found a lady making a recovery jacket from a baby grow, it works a treat, I would have probably got a pair of tights as they are called if I has known sooner as its breathable,, thankyou for this idea, vets can be very costly, my husband paid 85 euro, for her which was so sweet of him. Im sorry for the long comment,,,but just to put you in the picture a bit,,, I took off the cone as she couldn’t even eat properly with it, it’s awkward from a bowl,, and using a flat plate it goes on the floor,, so now she’s alot more comfortable.

  • Thank you! My male cat had a wound on his back. Every time it began to heal, he would re-open it again from licking. I tried baby shirts, but he would always get out of them. This idea works great! I did have to create a space between the tail and stomach so that he can urinate while wearing it, and I widened the arm space so that he has good mobility. He is a large cat, 20 lbs. I used extra large (queen size) for him.

  • My cat got spayed yesterday and soon as I got home with her she started licking the wound none stop. I didn’t have a cone collar and so I decided to look on youtube to see how to make one when I ran across this website. It looked to be less stressful for her. Worked wonderfully and only had to leave it on for 24 hours. I took it off today and she hasn’t licked it once. Thank you for this brilliant idea!

  • Thank you so much! I was looking for an alternative to the cone. My male cat just got neuter, been in a cone for 11 days, it was suppose to be 14. But he was losing weight, depressed, wasn’t playing, so unhappy. So I released him early from this awful head trap. Well now, I am getting a female kitten spayed. I found her as a stray. I pitied what she would go through with a cone. My vet insists on cone but I will instruct her to put on suit too. When I get home, I will remove cone from my strict vet.
