I just got this exact 11th gen hatchback, coming from a 2001 Corolla LE. For me the cargo space is a huge upgrade, actually everything seems to be an upgrade from that old car… except the speaker’s sound quality. I feel like the base speakers in the new Civic definitely need a replacement for a more decent music listening experience. Other than that, i’m absolutely amazed with how much cars have progressed in the last 22 years.
I found out about the sedans having longer cargo space this year after having a subcompact and sedan. I had a 24 Kona that claimed to have 25 ft of cargo space. I traded it in for a 24 Elantra which has a longer trunk. I found out the same thing you did, a stroller will fit more easily in the Elantra sedan and leave plenty of space for stuff on the side. In the Kona subcompact which might as well be called a raised hatchback, the stroller had to be put sideways and took up most of the space, and it’s not exactly practical to stack too much stuff above or below a stroller
No middle frame when opening baggage door – this is a big advantage of hatchback over the sedan, I mean, the baggage door opens with a rear windshield, not on sedan – the door only. I do part time delivery with my Mazda Protege 5, with a rear seats folded down I can fit a wide large items, I would not be able to on a sedan… Thank you for this article, I’m looking to buy a same Honda as yours, wondering on cargo space…I hit like 👍….P.S – you can wrap around some small blanket over the edge of the item you are carrying, to not hit the rear windshield…✌️
Clearly you keep your cars for several years. As your kids get bigger, you’ll need more leg room in the back seat. As their luggage switches from strollers to suitcases and/or duffel bags, the additional cubic feet of vertical storage will be better optimized. When buying a new car you have to think about how it will fit into your life 5 years from now, not just today.
very interesting points for sure, I own a 2022 base hatchback in meteorite gray and I never have once complained abt the interior and utility. you are completely correct when you say that the back row has more legroom (close to accord likeness). I never knew that the trunk space was that much shorter in depth compared to its sedan model but with sedan builds you always get a little bit more depth as they intend you to use the trunk only. personally, the seats folding down so easily compliment the depth issue, and the height in the hatch plus the seats down make it have the utility of a mid-size SUV. The Costco run has never been easier, and packing for road trips and bike rides has never been easier and more exciting.
