Is The Interior Department Closed?

The Department of the Interior has announced that the majority of national parks and monuments in the United States will be closed to the public during a government shutdown. The Department of the Interior is committed to upholding the highest standards of public access to and maintenance of America’s national parks and public lands. If Congress does not pass spending legislation, significant swaths of the U.S. government would have to suspend operations as soon as March 1. The Interior Department has not said when or how it might close its more than 400 national parks sites and furlough its 20,000 workers.

A long-term spending bill must still be passed for FY2024, and a 11/18/23 shutdown is possible if an agreement is not reached. National Park Service (NPS) sites will be closed, meaning that the majority of national parks will be closed completely to public access. Lawmakers now face a March 22 shutdown deadline for the rest of government. The federal government passed a continuing resolution just a day before the first of two deadlines, keeping the government open.

In a “shutdown”, federal agencies must discontinue all non-essential discretionary functions until new funding legislation is passed and signed into law. The Department of the Interior has not said when or how it might close its more than 400 national parks sites and furlough its 20,000 workers.
