Also. I love shimming jambs of doors ESPECIALLY ext doors, at least in 3 or 4 places on ea side. This door will never move & will be sound & secure. This is really important to achieve nice reveals on both sides of the jambs. I ALWAYS have at least 2 or 3 shim buckets, one w wood sims & some plastic shims, & one w all kinds of plywood or veneer type shims. When I’m constantly doing all kinds of work, I wind up w all kinds of different thickness materials that make awesome shims. I have a fetish with having shims for all kinds of projects.

I’m right there with you on those slaphappy door manufacturers. Either their people aren’t properly trained or just don’t care. Here’s a tip for y’all – When ripping 3/4 or 1-1/2 material and end up with lots of various strips of wood gang cut them to 4″ lengths and keep them in a designated shim bucket. Sometimes I cut up random blocks to replentish my shim bucket. Oh and 15 and 30# black paper is great for that extra bit needed to get a shim to fit snug.
as a young finish carpenter i was sent to a Apartment to Condo conversion. All (ALL) doors of all 50 units were removed except for the entry and stored with no markings / legend / list of any sort in the basement. Hinges removed, leaning, screws in a bunch of cardboard boxes. It was an effing disaster. I spent 14 months sizing, planing, flipping, re-mortising, straightlining, routing curves into stops then re-cased over 700 doors. Hundreds if not a thousand more in the following 25 years. Doors are kinetic architecture / fixtures that live and operate in all 3 axis x-y & z and if a jamb is ‘cross legged’ the vertical plane is x’s 2. There is nothing ‘Simple’ or ‘Easy’ about proper butt hinge or pivot door installation. If you have learned the process and can troubleshoot it can appear straightforward but given the number of crap installs i have removed and re hung or replaced few know how and fewer are learning. i wont even get started on MC Escher casing in settling old homes. Hire a pro, you wont regret it when the door still functions 10years later.
Man, those door prehangers are atrocious indeed. I returned 2 new doors exclusively because of the bad assembly, gave up and just refinished the old one. And that was a $3K door – one would think they’d take extra 5 minutes to assemble it straight… Hinges mortised at random depth, screws driven at random angles, the threshold installed too tight to the door, the opening 1/8″ different on top and bottom. Big corporations = greed and deception. I could have fixed it if I wanted, but not when I paid $3K!
Here’s the thing; it’s a guarantee that if the jambs, door and everything else has had it, the exterior casing is NOT going to magically be in better shape. Consider this; you expect that new door to be good to go for what, 20-40 years? Will that exterior casing that’s been there for 20 years already be good for another 20+? After perusal the whole article, I would have taken that POS door back.
