Tree decorating has ancient roots in various cultures, including Roman and Celtic traditions. The German community began to accept both trees and formal Christmas, leading to the idea that Christmas trees are pagan. As the holidays approach, more decorated Christmas trees can be seen twinkling through windows across America. Even the most innocuous holiday decorations are actually witchy and pagan in origin.
People new to Paganism often ask about whether or not they can have a Christmas tree or holiday tree in their home. Artificial trees can be festive and in some cases necessary and practical decorations. However, for a Witch’s tree to be part of the Winter Solstice MAGICK, only the real deal will do.
The history of the Christmas tree includes the earliest winter solstice celebrations, Queen Victoria’s decorating habits, and the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree in New York. Decorating a Christmas tree was taken from pagans and considered as magic ritual and witchcraft. Many modern witches like to decorate their trees in theme with even more explicitly witchy ways, such as having a black Christmas tree.
In many countries, it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. Don’t feel condemned about decorating a tree, as it is primarily a festive tradition and not linked to witchcraft.

Is decorating a tree witchcraft?
Christmas tree decoration in Poland, originating from Germany in the 18th century, was initially popular in large cities but later spread to homes. The tradition was initially considered a magic ritual and witchcraft, with the tree being a talisman to protect the house from evil spirits and keep family members safe. The tree should be a fir or pine, symbolizing life and hope, while the green color signifies hope. In the past, Christmas trees were decorated with candles, cakes, nuts, apples, and handmade paper ornaments, each with its own meaning.
Today, Christmas tree decorations are less symbolic, with electric lights, shimmering chains, glass balls, and paper ornaments becoming more popular. However, the true magic of decorating the tree with loved ones remains a significant element of Polish Christmas.
What does the Bible say about a tree?
The Bible’s significance of trees is evident in Genesis 2:9, where God created every tree pleasant to the sight and good for food. The biblical tree of life is in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is in the garden. The creation of trees serves as a testament to God’s wisdom, creativity, and provision. The lush vegetation, including majestic trees, is described as “good” and forms the backdrop for the harmonious relationship between humanity and God. Biblical trees symbolize life, growth, and fertility, reflecting God’s abundant blessings upon creation.
What religion started decorating trees?
Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition by the 16th century, with devout Christians bringing decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. Before Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. In many countries, it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness.
In the Northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22, called the winter solstice. Many ancient people believed that the sun was a god and that winter came every year because the sun god had become sick and weak. Evergreen boughs reminded them of the green plants that would grow again when the sun god was strong and summer would return. The ancient Egyptians worshipped a god called Ra, who had the head of a hawk and wore the sun as a blazing disk in his crown.
What do trees do spiritually?
Native American traditions hold trees as sacred embodiments of the Earth’s tranquility and wisdom. These majestic beings are deeply intertwined with indigenous spiritual practices, symbolizing the profound connection between nature and humanity. The Koyukon people believe that trees are aware of their surroundings and communicate with one another, supported by mycorrhizal networks. The concept of a world tree illustrates the pivotal role these beings play in our spiritual orientation. For the Ojibwa, the cedar tree represents their unique relationship with the natural world.
Is Christmas tree pagan practice?
Christmas traditions have roots in ancient pagan practices, such as the Yule and Saturnalia festivals. The Christmas tree, adorned with ornaments and lights, originates from early Germanic tribes and Roman customs celebrating the winter solstice. Easter, another major Christian holiday, also has pagan origins linked to springtime festivities. These traditions highlight the blend of secular and religious practices in modern celebrations. What plant is associated with witchcraft?
Henbane, a plant used in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman anesthesia, contains chemicals that affect the central nervous system. It was also associated with witchcraft and used in flying ointment. However, ingesting Henbane can cause respiratory and heart failure. Aconite, a poisonous plant from Greek mythology, was associated with the goddess Hekate and was used to poison wolves and humans. It was listed as an ingredient in witches’ flying ointments but its lethal toxicity raises questions about its application.
Lady’s Mantle, a plant believed to contain a magical essence, was believed to create the Philosopher’s Stone, which could transform base metals into gold, cure diseases, and prolong life. The name Alchemilla comes from the Arabic word for chemistry, al-kimiya, meaning “the little alchemical one”.
Is the tree pagan?
Evergreens were once used as a sign of eternal life by early Christians in catacombs under Rome. However, until the mid-19th century, Christians viewed the Christmas tree as a foreign pagan custom. Pagans brought fir trees to their homes at Yuletide, symbolizing everlasting life and fertility. Druids believed trees were gifts from the Mother Goddess, marking time and seasons with sacred oak trees decorated with mistletoe and lights. Vikings worshipped evergreens, particularly Scandinavian evergreens, as the sun god’s unique plant, symbolizing spring and the end of winter.
What does the Bible say about trees?
The Bible is a rich tapestry of trees, with the most mentions of trees in Genesis, Psalms, and Revelation. Wisdom is also referred to as a tree in Proverbs 3:18. Major characters and events in the Bible are associated with trees, except for Joseph, who is referred to as a tree in Genesis 49:22. Jeremiah and Psalms 1 also encourage believers to be like trees. Jesus’ physical description is only found in Isaiah, where he is compared to a tree growing out of barren ground. This highlights the Bible’s love for trees and their significance in the Bible.
What is the tree symbol pagan?
Trees were believed to represent longevity, rebirth, strength, wisdom, and the reincarnation of our ancestors. They were planted at the center of new settlements, providing resources like food, shelter, and a meeting point for ceremonies. The Celts revered five sacred trees, with the oak being the most powerful. The Irish word for oak is ‘doir’, from which the English word ‘door’ is thought to originate.
The pagan belief in the power of trees persists in present-day Ireland, with ‘fairy trees’ adorned with medals, ribbons, and messages from people seeking knowledge, cures, and prosperity. The oak represents the center of the world and the most potent doorway into the underworld.
What trees are related to witchcraft?
In Celtic mythology, blackthorn wood is regarded as a magical tree, believed to be utilized in the fabrication of witches’ wands and staffs. The use of a walking stick crafted from blackthorn wood was regarded as a form of witchcraft, and a blackthorn staff was thought to possess the ability to repel malevolent spirits. Additionally, the planting of elder trees in proximity to a domicile was thought to serve as a deterrent against malevolent entities.
Is it a sin to decorate a tree?
In light of the doctrine of the Trinity, it can be argued that the concept of a supreme being, or “God,” is not applicable to the celebration of Christmas. This is because, according to the Christian faith, Jesus is the Lord and therefore has precedence over other deities. Consequently, the celebration of Christmas does not involve the worship of any other “gods.” In accordance with the doctrine that all things should be subjugated to Christ, the practice of decorating a tree is deemed permissible, as it serves to enhance the celebration of Jesus.
📹 What I Wish I Knew Before I Began Practicing Witchcraft
Witchcraft is a journey, it’s something that we all find in our own very personal and unique ways but this doesn’t mean it isn’t a bit …
The number one thing I wish I had learned sooner is that you don’t have to wait until your mental health is great to practice witchcraft. I stopped waiting around to be “well enough,” and discovered I can use the craft to help me feel more centered and grounded, which has helped my mental health immensely.
I’ve been practicing since I was 13 years old. I am 60 now. My daughter has just recently found her witchy self, and came to me for guidance. I have incorporated my practice into every aspect of my life, and honestly, there’s no longer any difference between my “spell work “, and my daily activities. I shared this article with her, as it is the best way I’ve found to give my daughter the proper outlook on beginning her own practice. THANKS!
I’ve been studying and practicing for 25 years and I can tell you that you will never stop learning. That’s part of the journey. This article is a beautiful reminder to witches of all ages and training that no matter how long you’ve been doing it, we can always learn and relearn things. You can’t have proper spellwork without intention and putting your spirit into what you’re doing. I appreciate you pointing that out. With the age of social media, many times there’s more “decoration” but a lack of intention which is something I even noticed among people that liked the idea but never became serious about it even 25 years ago. Witchcraft is something in you that calls to you. You feel things that others may not nor have they awakened to yet. As you said, it should be something you enjoy, a place and time to manifest your energy to help those around you, a kinship with nature and understanding the light and dark of the world and how to navigate through that effectively and in a healthy manner. It’s a thing of beauty and learning the old ways mixed with the modern. I bid you lots of learning and peace on your journey and thank you for this reminder!
Thank you so much. I’m am a 58 year old man who has a lot of born abilities that I let fade away because of all the “You Must…” “You Can’t…” “A witch is…” “A Pagan is…” I have recently realized it is who I am. It’s not a choice, it’s a gift. I really appreciate your style and your demeanor. I have subscribed and I will definitely stay tuned for more of your wisdom. Thank you again.
Witchcraft is unique with each individual, for the most part, we don’t even need the books and such because the magic comes within us. We don’t even need to speak spells in different languages, we can actually create our own spells. What works for others may not work for us, we tend to create our own practises and sometimes we are not even aware of it.
I’ve been feeling a tug in the back of my mind pushing me to learn this. Last night, my intuition to buy a tarot deck was so strong. Today, I finally decide to formally explore witchcraft and I see this article and see that you currently have 222k subscribers. This is the final push. I’m doing this, LOL.
This helped sooooo much! I’m literally a BABY right now, just started a week ago! And my first fear was doing a spell wrong like just stuttering over a word, I was like ohhhhh noooooo did I just ruin everything???? Haha. Thanks SO much for these tips! I’m so grateful I found you right at the beginning of my brand new journey! Clearly I was brought here for a reason 😉
One thing that has been helping me is to follow the natural cycles like the moon and sun through the traditional pagan holidays. I’m more of a celestial type witch though. I do my practice by the moon, but I also celebrate the sun-marker holidays like Imbolc and Yule etc. Just paying attention to the moon cycles has been helpful to me. But I personally don’t feel overwhelmed or perfectionistic about the work. It’s too personal to allow outside opinions and requirements space. Pagans and witches have been plagued by outside controllers and invasion for centuries, so no one is going to do that to me in my practice today. It’s a slow, personal path. Thank you very much 🌎🔥💧🌬
I am a beginner. I thought I messed up my first spell for relieving stress and anxiety. I realized I left something out, and used a container that was too small, and made a HUGE mess…. but I just laughed about it. The spell didn’t go how I intend, but it worked regardless. I didn’t even start to stress about the mess. I just laughed and cleaned it up.
I just wanted to add that you don’t have go to a “witch school” or have a “real witch teacher”. If someone is coming to you and saying they can teach you, especially at a price…run. Lol. That is not what witchcraft or a magical path is about. If you seek that out for yourself that’s one thing. But now one should come to you and offer services or tell you that they will teach you the “right” way to do Magick. They are in it for the wrong reasons. EVERYTHING you need to know, you can find out on your own through research. Also, please don’t go to someone who has been practicing for a while and has lots of knowledge and expect them to take time out of their lives to give you advice. Especially advice that is easy to research. As Annie’s suggests, just take your time. Your personal Magick shouldn’t be rushed.
As a person who was raised in a strict Christian household, something inside of me always was drawn and felt comfortable and familiar to me about the craft. I will never forget my first spell with my best friend as we light a candle and said our chant under the full autumn moon in a field surrounded by the woods of Maine. It was a special memory and that moment I felt connected to something bigger then myself and it felt so nice. I would try to practice witchcraft but then my families beliefs and my upbringing would scare me and shame me away from it. I did this a few times and now finally at 37 I am embracing who I am and what my heart desires which is to walk the way of the witch. I went through a dark night of the soul and tower moment in my life which opened my eyes and release me from the bondages of limiting beliefs and fears especially concerning religion dogma and the thought of hell as my punishment for my choice. I no longer live in fear and enjoy my life tremendously more walking the way of the witch. I love it and it feels so natural and familiar. I am thankful for my new found freedom and the love and enjoyment I have embracing my heart as a witches heart! Blessed be!
I’ve always had a pull towards divination, ever since I was a child.. but I struggled to really pursue it until recently, because many people (religious or otherwise) seemed to automatically assume it’s associated with dark entities. It’s been a journey to recognize that it’s not wrong or bad to practice.. even though much of society seems to still have this misconception. There is also a history of accusation and persecution, which is sometimes very strange to fathom
I felt very similar. For the longest time I thought something was wrong with me because the books I read in the beginning didn’t make sense to me and I was anxious that this world I loved so much wasn’t meant for me. It took me over two years to find my own path. The little corner of witchcraft and paganism that works for me. I wished I knew that this tiny corner was always there, I believed that there is just one strict way just like you and i tried so hard to fit in that my journey felt like a failure for a long time. I wish I would have known…would’ve spared me so much stress and anxiety. I wish I had people like you when I started out. Thank you for helping our witchy community. 💚🌿
As someone who has been practicing for 5 years, it is extremely confusing at first. There are still things that I don’t know, and it took so long for me to realize that real power and humility comes from curiosity (i.e. not knowing) which is why witchcraft is a practice. To anyone perusal this, it is okay if you have to take a break from being overwhelmed, spiritual burnout, etc. Just remember who you’re doing it for. 🙂
“Witchcraft is not an area of your life that you should stress over” That was really good to hear. And I think not only for me but for a lot of people like me that struggle with mental health and executive disfunction in one way or another. Weeks can go by that I only managed to read maybe 2 pages in the witchy book I was so excited about, that I had the energy to write down anythinging or even just finnish a meditation seshion. And it’s more often than not that I feel so so guilty about it. That I’m convincing myself that “Hey you’re failing this thing that you really do enjoy”. Hearing from someone else that it’s OK. That yeah, maybe even the everyday things I do can be a part of it, or that the times it comes (as you said) naturally, spontainusly, is enough. It’s not wrong that it is that way for me. Thank you <3
I began my journey with healing crystals three years ago. I still don’t know a lot about them. I’ve never casted a single spell and only drawn three sigils. Never done a single spell jar or studied the moon or anything. Yesterday, I began my work with Apollo. I’m so inexperienced, but I’m happy with my craft.
This is a dream life for me. Living somewhere quiet, away from the busy streets of London, being surrounded by plants, candles, in some cosy warm cottage in a secluded area away from any other form of life other than perhaps cattle, birds and that which is “unseen” but of a benevolent nature. No stress, no pressure of anything, no need to rush, a healthy lifestyle not just physically, but spiritually and psychologically.
Atheist Pagan here of the green/kitchen variety. It’s nice to see you telling ppl they dont need all the guff to practice and that there are so many ways to practice. I was shy about my practice for YEARS because I didn’t know of any other atheist pagans. I don’t worship any deities or believe in any metaphysical stuff. When I use spells its to set intentions. When I do ceremonies it’s to focus my thoughts. When I grow and cook food for my family, that is my practice 🙂
I thank you so much for the pleasant vibrations you emit. I’ve always known I’m a witch but have always felt guilty because I come from a Christian upbringing so I have never given in to my TRUE SELF outta fear honestly. I’m 50 years old and I am finally beginning to practice and use my power without shame. THANK YOU TO YOU AND ALL MY WITCH FAMILY, BROTHERS AND SISTERS 💜
I’ve been struggling to find my path because I am a Christian, it means a lot to hear you say “you can be any faith” for a long time I’ve done small practices most before I even accepted that I was drawn to magic, and I’ve recently been getting into herbalism. I’m slowly but surely finding my way and I appreciate your articles from the bottom of my heart. 🖤
I think the best part that you mentioned was how your practice can be individual to you and you don’t need to follow one particular religious idea, you can even be atheist and practice witchcraft. It made me think of the 4 elements, ancestor work, crystals, fae, and other non religious-based forms of witchcraft. That would actually be a really cool article idea
Thank you so much for saying everything you’ve said. I’ve been practicing for a few years now & I’ve never felt connected to any Pagan God, so I myself do not follow any. From day one I’ve always been really drawn to candle magic, bought many books, made my own candles, just love everything about it. When I first started my path I was told to never blow out the candle after a spell, along with many other “never do” things, but it just made me feel like I didn’t belong because it didn’t feel right. So that’s when I realized it’s “my” path & I started doing what felt right to me not what “they” told me I should be doing. I’ve relaxed a lot since then & now it’s much more enjoyable for me. Blessings 💜
Im a complete beginner. I have been calling myself a wannabe witch since I have not really done any practice. I thought I needed to buy a bunch of tools to get started and have a ton of time to put into my practice. This gives me hope that I can switch from being a wannabe witch to actually saying Im a witch. I have been looking into green witchcraft and kitchen witchcraft because I love the idea of working with herbs and cooking. I am also drawn to the moon, crystals, and nature in general. I always love the idea of living in a cottage in the forest. So hopefully I can find myself through practice.
Also, if anyone has advice for being a witch when your whole family is Christian? I wish I could share that part of my life with them, but my mom openly told me that witches are evil, and she thinks they are Satanists (even though I know that’s not true). My struggle is getting past the annoying guilt that’s always around. It’s gotten easier over the years but it’s still sometimes there.
For me when I was young I would just do what felt right, what was needed. I would be like 10 or 11 and go In the woods with the ingredients i felt I needed and would go to work. I personally would not do a “working” that I didn’t write, think, or feel myself. I know what I want and need. You do too. 💫💗
I have been practising my Craft for 30 years and compared to back then when there was very little works available to read and your were taught or handed down the knowledge, compared to know it can seem VERY overwhelming with so much information. We each walk a different path for a different reason and once you have chosen to follow your path then take time out to reflect and meditate on the right knowledge to come to you. Buying books, reading on the internet and consuming too much just blows your mind. There is no right or wrong, there is only your way for you and the goddess will find you!
Nailed it! I’ve been practicing since 1999 and I can very much echo what she’s saying here about feeling overwhelmed by the newness and Vast amounts of information I was exposed to. And that was before the age of the Internet really took off. I can’t even imagine trying to start in today’s environment. What I wish I had known when I started had less to do with what was out there and more to do with really understanding what it was I wanted. I felt attracted to the history and traditions of witchcraft. But what I thought I knew versus what the realities were were completely different. So I kept trying to fit myself into somebody else’s idea of the craft or their perspective on a particular path. Here’s my best advice for anyone starting out new. Throw away everything you think you know or that you’ve heard of from others. Ask yourself a couple simple questions. Is it that attracted you to the craft, and what is it you really want out of it? I suppose a good third question to ask would be what level of commitment are you willing to put into it. That last question probably sounds slightly intimidating like is this a chore? Witchcraft is whatever you put into it. Like anything else in life whatever you put into it is what you’re going to get out of it. It can be the cornerstone of your life or it can be a passing thing that you occasionally visit once or twice a year. Both are perfectly fine. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to practice witchcraft. Now keep in mind that there is Wicca which is considered the religion of witchcraft.
I was drawn to witchcraft in my teens but had no idea how to protect myself, so I dipped into dark magic out of pure curiosity and found myself in trouble. My house had entities I believe, my life turned for the worse which I believe partially came out of this mess. I closed myself up, got blessed by a priest and followed Christianity for over 20 years. Catholicism cleaned up my soul, my life and helped me immensely, but there has been something missing. I can explain it as a grounding, or connection to this earth as I feel like my thoughts were either dark in the past, or up in another world. I find myself being drawn again today to witchcraft but am VERY afraid because of my past, but there is something so undeniably real to this that really makes me feel well and stable. I don’t really know where to begin or if I am being called back, (I feel like my guides are thrilled I am re-exploring this) but I am also fearful that dark entities may be lurking to suck me back into that scary reality that is possible in dark magic. So any advice on how to limit myself to the practices that keep me grounded, are positive and light and will not attract bad energy This is what I am comfortable with as I have seen both worlds and don’t believe we are all cut out to work with dark magic and that’s okay, but I can’t also deny my essence which has always been spiritual. Thanks.
My religious conditioning has been my biggest emotional roadblock all of my life, in the last year I’ve begun to realize that Witchcraft is an enhancement to my belief systems. Not an act against them, I’ve been researching this year, and I feel like my practice is sitting there waiting to be written down, and that’s because I’ve been practicing all my life without even realizing it.💜
I have been a practicing witch for 41 years. I only learned what I was 30 years ago. I am constantly humbled and learning to this day. I am a mechanical practitioner. Whatever tool I have is what will work. I am better with some than others. You are right, You are the magic, just find a way to let it out of you in a directed manner. Good job TGW.
I agree. In Illuminism they term Magick as The Art Of Will, which leaves the journey open for us to embody an amalgamation of everything we acquire. I eventually got into Mental Imagery as the One and Only Tool. I’m a Spiritual Alchemist in soul, so I revolved back into this, but in a much much higher form, thanks to the endless material available now
I am not a witch, I don’t practice witchcraft, but I don’t understand why people don’t respect you, I personally do, I think witchcraft is really aesthetically pleasing (since people are commenting ALL THE TIME, not reading and sending me hate when all I was trying to say was that even though I am not a witch, I respect witches) to watch and entertaining. Please, never stop because you are judged by other, you do you!❤️
This article has really helped, I have felt a little overwhelmed and know this is my path, I am always walking it without even realising…. I want to really be present on my path now and just allow the ebbs and flows of unfolding and learning in my own time… I feel that I have locked my full soul away for so long and I know it’s a personal journey and it’s ok to take it slow. I’m naturally and always have been deeply connected to the earth forests and nature and the ocean too… thank you for your advise and sharing xx
Hello! My name is Jordan, and I’ve been a green witch since I was little, because my godmother was a witch. Her passing devastated me greatly, and I’m so happy I found another wonderful woman to get witchcraft advice from. I’m not exactly a beginner, but that does NOT mean I cant take a thing or two from this. Thank you for being yourself and helping young witches. We appreciate you!
Another lovely production, Annie. I caught a glimpse of Olivia in one of the frames. Your advice and emotional support is a breath of fresh air and quite the refreshing change from the message one hears from the rest of the mundane world. After 30-something years, I am still learning and evolving in my craft but, isn’t that the beauty of it? Much love
I’ve be practicing for 15 years an in he last 4 years I have taken the path of a hedge witch. The one thing I have learnt that should be learnt by everyone is “make the magic your own” everyone practices different an dose thing differently to the next. There is no right or wrong way to do something. Everyday I make it a goal to learn something new. But make it your own. No one has the right to tell you that your are right or wrong. Blessed be an mY you never walk alone 🌹
Just stumbled upon your beautiful website, and am very glad I did. I was raised Christian and carry those beliefs, but some family members have always recognized a few pagan tendencies in me, and over time, and having been part of some sabbat celebrations with friends, I’ve realized there’s a huge part of me that already understands the magic of things. I feel very herbal/ green/kitchen witchy. I’ve had a book on making your own salves, oils, and lotions for years and years. I recently bought a huge herbal remedies book. I think it’s time to pick up and earnestly begin to seriously delve into practice. Thank you for your insight.
Beautifully done. I can’t wait for the rest of the series. There is always such a focus on having the right tools and ceremonies that it’s intimidating as a beginner. It’s comforting to hear that we can take our time and use only what we feel we need to practice. That we can make it our own and it’s okay if it doesn’t follow what everyone else does.
hey! i know this is an old article, and i doubt many will see this, but i wish to share my short story anyway. A year ago, when i just discovered witchcraft, i loved it. But i’d first like to note that i wasn’t doing well, mentally. From personal experience, if i had a choice now, i would not start my witchcraft journey if i wasn’t at least a little bit mentally stable, for it just put too much pressure on me, still sometimes, even though i’m healed a great deal, so i take my practise slow now and even took a half year long break to just regain my senses and ground. When i read about, and got my first pendulum a year ago, i was so happy and immediately started asking questions to god knows what, many inaproppriate ones as well (about other people). I even tried to communicate to spirits and thought i was talking to Lucifer a little while, but after i read about poltergeists i banished anything that i may have been talking with. (if i was talking to anything at all: i found out a little while later that i was unconsiously moving the pendulum myself) But that whole situation got me really stressed out for a good long while and whenever i pick up my pendulum or practise my craft, i get anxious, thinking about last year. I know that i am safe, nothing has happened to me and i got even better, but my mind now associates witchcraft (the incense, candles and just overall practise) with that anxious and scared feeling. I love it, do not get me wrong, and i want to continue my journey. But i need to get over this small “trauma”, if anybody has any advice to offer, it would be of great relief to me.
Thank you for this… I stopped practicing when my Aunt passed. She taught me everything I know. I felt I lost all connections when I lost her. However, I was so wrong… When it is a natural thing, it is scary. But can also be uplifting. I am not sure how I got to your article, but glad I did. Thank you. Sincerely; Devin/VermontMom
I grew up Catholic and loved being Catholic until farely recently. I also struggled with my sexuality since 2013. I have also been fascinated with Wicca since forever basically. But I feel so bad for even considering leaving my religion. And yet here I am practically inhaling everything to do with Wicca and Witchcraft. So I am so grateful that there are so many resources available online. For free no less.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to do this article. I am not a witch (maybe I am!), but have just begun to study the ancient runes and found my way to your article this morning, Thanksgiving Day! Your information was quite relative. The amount of information regarding the Runes is overwhelming in the beginning and it takes a long term commitment and dedicated practice that will span for many years to come. Most importantly, as you point out, one needs to develop their own personal style and constantly remember that their personal style is a gift to their craft, a Gift to the Universe. I had no knowledge of the Runes until recently. Somehow, they called out to me and I have begun to study them and feel called to practice the craft. Thank you. Everything you said in this article applies to my study of the Runes.
I needed to hear this. Today. Thank you. Since at very young age, whilst growing up in Christian faith, there was, IS a different side of me. Something I can not explain. I’m drawn to different things or energies, other than my peers. I’m a Hermit kind of person and value solitude. I see and feel things deeper . I feel more excited and magical in this realm of reality, and some people say it’s wrong. I think to most of us or select few, it’s guilt holding back to get out of your skin and become comfortable in accepting that it’s ok to be different.,,,😺
I searched a lot of things about witchcraft and i drown in books. And now, i understand that the practising is within me, i have to look at my inside and my soul. Actually i’ve already known many things. For example, today I prepared a tonic to purify crystals and the magical words just came out of my mouth. I didn’t even think about it. I am happy to find your website sister ❤️ )0(
I have always been drawn to it didn’t know why but wasn’t able to dedicate the time that it needed really when I had all my children. Now they’re all grown up and it’s my time it’s me and my craft time. Last night I made some moon water for the first timeand the moon is something I’m always rushing outside to look at it gives me so much energy it’s crazy but I respond to it. Thank you for putting my nerves at ease because I do it times feel as though I need to learn everything really quick, but I think you’re right to take your time and do what feels right to that individual.
Your website has become my safe spot and comfort zone in the last month. I learned a lot from you, you reminded me how much I used to love nature and how much I found comfort and calmness in working herbs and taking things slowly. I come from a totally different culture based in Middle East and mesopotamia, the herbs I’m working with are quiet different than what you use yet I learned from you how local herbs and funguies which had been used for thousands of years contain old knowledge in them. I’m so thankful to you. ❤
Witchcraft and Paganism is so different for everyone. People read book after book trying to find answers, but in the end you have to find your own path. There’s no one right way to do things and looking the part doesn’t make you more advanced either. But if your lost on where to start, try learning about nature in your area. Learn the plants and trees. Keep notes on the weather and what changes happen at certain times of year. You’ll notice little things. That’s a start.
Blessed Be Annabel, Merry Meet, I will be moving to Ashland, OR, shortly to establish my Earth Stewards Trust, and White Tiger Farms, to serve the Lady and Her Consort, and would love to learn from you. There is the Goddess Temple Ashland there already, with a community of like minded folk to learn from, but it sounds like your journey is one that I can learn from.
Total respect, I’ve for years tried the spiritual/ occult path but it’s taken lots of practice and patience, an old Tibetan saying ” you can’t fill a bowl of water if its already half full of water”. Other words reset ones beliefs of everything, start again like a child, trust me its comes from within I have noticed magick working /how it works every day ( hidden in plain sight). Belief is key. Greeting from Ireland btw .
You mentioned being an atheist witch. I consider myself an atheist pagan, dabbling in magick. I’ve been on this path for almost a year, and still learning. I know you work with herbs, naturals, and kitchen magick, but do you also consider yourself pagan? Do you worship deity or not? I’m still trying to find information and knowledge on being pagan without deity and I feel so alone on this path.
Okay I am so sorry for this.. But I got so distracted Buy your beauty. Thank you so much for putting this article out two years ago. It’s always deep to find everybody’s experience in witchcraft and what they do. All I wanted to do was to drop in and say you are very beautiful and the glow you have it’s so amazing.❤❤
1:20ish Definitely I’ve felt that way in the past. Also the feeling that some of the knowledge has ‘gone missing’ via generations of stepping away. I think it’s something we all feel to a certain extent. Even after years and years. You’re very brave to talk about this, and for what it’s worth, you seem to be doing really well.
As a 49 year practitioner, I’m very impressed by this young witch. Excellent article. You will never know everything. Your practice is how you live. Your intent is your magick and you are as diverse and individual in your practice as you are when you look in the mirror. No way is the right way only you can determine your path and what works.
Thank you so much for your article. It has opened my mind so many other opportunities. I am also a Witch, I am so happy in what I believe in. And has opened my heart to so many opportunities in what I practice. I have been a witch ever since I was sixteen years of age, It has so many good things have done for me. In this belief are being what I practice. I believe i’m also a mixture of different kinds of witches. It has made me much happier in my life day to day of what I do and how I practice. I am definitely looking forward to more of your articles to see what you do in your practice. I am so proud of seeing someone who is SO open in their beliefs of being a witch and how they feel about how to practice it. You have a beautiful Magickal week 🌿. Blessed Be 🪔🕯🌙⭐️💜
I’m not a witch, but just a writer doing research for a story. However, I think that the fact that the magic is mostly subtle and not how it is made in books is a good thing for beginners. They won’t (probably 😉 ) blow themselves up by making a mistake 🙂 (by the way, do you ever wish that magic you are practising was working like the magic from fantasy books?)
I’ve always found it hard to even start because I feel like I don’t have the time to practice the basics that everyone puts so much emphasis on (protection, cleansing, grounding, feeling your energy etc.) due to my full time job and the time I do have outside of that I need a lot for taking care of my pets, myself(physically and mentally) and making sure house chores get done. I never feel like I have the time to just sit and even try to idk meditate to feel my energy or practice the basics. I also find the slight fear mongering many people, whether intentional or not, do with the whole if you can’t even properly protect yourself then you shouldn’t be moving forward or looking into other things, very stressful and a slight deterrent. I don’t know if this is maybe something you could speak about in a future article or something someone in the comments could give me advice about but any help would be really appreciated. Anyways, I love the article and I can’t wait for the next one 💜
There is so much noise about what you should and should not do in order to be a successful witch, and this was a very calming center in the middle of all that. I personally enjoy the idea of getting closer to nature and coming up with spells and rituals that feel right and comfortable for me. These days, I’ve been taking a cleansing walk through my neighborhood and enjoy the fresh breeze after a long day of work, and then take a cleansing shower to further wash off the working vibes and slip into a softer, calmer state of mine. It’s like the elements of air and water are working individually to clear my head, and I find that so special!
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak your heart. Listening to you is like reading the books I have by Scott Cunningham. The folk magic path feels right for me. I’m nearly 60 years old and often times I feel that I am too old for realizing a new path but life is too short to wonder “what if.”
Not a new practicer here, practiced a LOT until I got into an abusive relationship that did not allow me to. Been very intimidated lately on relearning everything I have lost over the past 5 years, and I think your website is going to reignite my spiritual practice 🖤🖤 very excited, thank you for posting:))
i love these kinda articles, its so reaffirming. i have always thought of it like a garden. people can have them in different seasons, in different sizes, maybe outside, maybe inside in a window, etc, etc. there’s so many ways to have your own lil garden. over time you learn more, it grows, you grow. might be unruly at times, some plants could die, but that doesnt make it any less a garden. ive been practicing off and on really since i can remember, its always been fascinating to me since i was a kid cause my mom (a christian) was who introduced me to the craft. one of the first differences i noticed with my own practice is not having a deity, or at least not in the same sense. for me it was important to stay grounded and remember silver linings. so my personal deity is many things. rotting compost, flies, maggots, all the gross stuff basically. because as unpleasant as it may be at times, it helps the balance of things. that even something so small plays a much bigger, and needed role. it helps me look on the more positive side of things, even if they may at first appear disgusting. to any young witches reading this, it doesnt have to be pretty, and its ok to make mistakes and make a mess. we all have.
I find witchcraft/wicca comforting. I’m trying to figure out what religion/practices I believe in and I’m not rushing it. I have to keep quiet about it because my whole family is mega Christian though. I’ve figured out one thing and that’s that I don’t believe in deities, no disrespect to them or the people that worship them but I just can’t find myself to believe in them. That’s alright though as within this field everyone has a different practice. I often find that I get overwhelmed when trying to learn about witchcraft/wicca because it has no official rules. This is a good thing, I’m just so used to following rules when it comes to a religion you know? I don’t have any special powers or at least I don’t believe I do, such as being able to sense things or feel presences but I do feel the pull to witchcraft and that’s good enough for me!
I felt the same way as you. I was told by others that I had to do it this way or that way. All the books I found made it seem lime if I did it my way it was wrong. I have been practicing for about 20years and still am learning. The most important lesson it that there is no wrong in witch regular it should be based on each persons feelings and take on the information they learn. Thank you for the article. Blessed be
My mother is a Pagan Witch, and so is my sister. I’ve always been interested in witchcraft, and I decided to start in high school, but I had to do it in secret, as I lived with people who did not like witches or their practice at the time. I moved out earlier this year, and I plan on dedicating my free time to witchcraft.
My number one thing is the same -that I don’t have to know every detail and history before practicing hands-on. I’ve spent 11 years being 98% a ‘scholar witch’ – researching and studying rather than getting my hands in it on a regular basis. I wanted the most firm and expansive foundation possinle from the writings of more experienced magickal practitioners. I couldn’t trust myself, basically. Now, this is AMAZING… in moderation. Don’t be afraid to burn those herbs in your cauldron/bowl, just do it! (Check the safety of the herb first, of course 👍) Don’t be afraid to cast that circle, or paint that sigil, or sink into that trance. Let yourself learn as deeply from experimentation as deeply as you learn from your studies. ❤
Practicing witchcraft improved my mental health. I started when I began a deep low Phase and fought every day with myself to Not hurt myself. I surrounded myself with things that turned out to ground me. I started to feel more at peace with myself. Of course my demons didn’t vanish but I Start to feel like I can handle them better. Professionel help is a must, of course. And He says “whatever makes you feel better and is Not distructive to you or someone else is a welcome Addition to your journey”. Or something like that. Freely speaking or writing is easier than translating what others Said.
I absolutely love this’ the same exact thing happened to me when I first started learning about paganism I was learning but couldn’t properly filter what I was learning it became so overwhelming so I went into a shop to talk to somebody & she basically said the same exact thing that I am hearing from you dear. She asked me a couple of basic questions about what I was reading & learning she said well it seems like you’re doing fine you just might be trying to learn too quick?! She said something like that and it truly did help me reground myself! 🌒🧡🌘
i can’t even put into words how much your website has helped me. i’ve been slowly learning about witchcraft for about a year, but like you said, there are so many things out there that make me feel overwhelmed. in addition to that, i struggle from depression & ive always been scared to really dive in because of intrusive thoughts & my fear that they will ruin any spells i attempt. i’ve watched other witch’s websites but as a fellow artist, i just relate so heavily to you & can feel how genuine your heart is. you’ve given me the strength & courage to truly dive in. & i feel so wonderful now. so thank you. you are truly creating ripples of change for others.
You’ve helped me out so much because I just recently got into the practice of Wicca and I’ve had a ton of stress on if I needed tools or any sort of understanding of multiple deities to practice Wicca but now I understand that knowledge takes time especially in Wicca and not everyone follows the same path that you do, this helped remove a giant amount of stress that I had
This article is not for me today 😯 i dont know why but i thought it was about the struggle> socially speaking. That’s what i have the most trouble with. 9 years solo practitioner. Im from a VERY christian, VERY elderly town, my mom is a VERY catholic portigee, & many of the openly witchy people in my town are the pagan equivalent of “trans trenders” once you talk to them…. the struggle with being misrepresented & long misunderstood is driving me battyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🐱🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇 no one said it would be easy, but the christians who run their mouths about saving you are just brainwashed, most christians i’ve meet are uneducated about non christian religions of the world (& some christian proclaimers don’t even know much about CHRISTIANITY), & the talkative ones are relentless in their indoctrination 🤕. The funniest thing is that there is definitely a small occult underground here that IS real & valid, so i like to imagine how shocked the majority around here would be if they only knew that heathens walk among them 🤣🤣🤣 silly normies- i guess i could thank them for making me feel like some kind of mystical secret being 🙄 i just wish it wasn’t so marginalized & misunderstood…
Fear of failure often keeps us from starting at all. That’s how it was for me. I bought all the things. Every candle, ever color, every ingredient k could find. I prepared myself materially but couldn’t actually get started out of fear of failure. Now I look back and feel I wasted time and felt unnecessary anxiety
As a former Pagan store owner some decades ago, one of the first issues that I was not able to come to terms with was the commodification of spiritual practices that were all about me. When it came to Pagan practices, (but not isolated to) the “stuff” factor seemed more important than what lie behind them. The fact is, nothing lie behind them at all, as so much of it was just mass-produced, cheaply made garbage manufactured in China, India, and other places by poor people. People who were paid little, worked slave labor hours and days in terrible conditions whose employers were doing nothing more than manufacturing and selling exploitive objects to take advantage of the newest witch craze of the 90s. Harder still to tolerate was the ceaseless avalanche of books. Most of which were just repeating the same things over and over and over that other authors had already covered countless times before. One of the publishing houses, one that I will not mention by name but is ubiquitous in the New Age world, just seemed to churn out these titles like crazy. Where at one time I had appreciation for this, I later came to realize it for what it really was, as an opportunistic scheme to cash in on those wanting to learn about this practice or that spiritual path. Two decades plus later, it is something that still exists in full force today. But then there were the other aspects of this. I became so disillusioned by what I saw from the inside, and the maddening swirl of confusion that it was creating on the outside, that after some time I walked away from all of it.
I’ve litteraly only just found my witchy self, and I never expected I was gonna go down this path (I’m 35). I felt drawn to this path as if I was told “now you’re ready”. I’ve had negative experiences with people practicing magic meant to cause harm, and its why for the longest time I was very afraid for it. But I feel like its been given to me as a gift, and I want to explore its good sides in my own terms. It does me good to remove the fear and learn to practice the art of it happily.
hey, little question. so, i’m trying to get into witchcraft but i’m not sure i should. my family doesn’t like that i’m interested in this stuff mostly because they’re christian. i really want to explore this stuff but i think i should wait till i’m 18 so they can’t hold their religion over me anymore. i love my mom and i don’t want to hurt her. please help me make a decision.
I wish someone had told me to take notes when I first started. Not just notes on things I did, but saw, heard, or even contacts during ceremony. There are people I wish I could ask questions from or connect with to grow past certain areas and develop them deeper, but because I didn’t take a notation, that information is lost. I wish someone had told me that experimentation is important in personal practice as well. Just because most people do spellwork or ritual one way, does not mean that something different couldn’t work better for my executive dysfunctional self. Be patient with yourself, your abilities (mundane or other), and be gentle with yourself when your brain doesn’t remember information. Don’t let others expectations make you feel bad or guilty for not being a “better Witch/Wiccan/Pagan/Heathen/(your descriptor here)
Thank you so much! I am currently at the point where I want to start, informing myself. I have always felt an attraction towards things that are considered to be related to witchcraft. As a child I had a strong connection with crystals and stones, I was (as I was told) quite talented with the pendulum; I always grabbed the attention of people who sold things like crystals (and in retrospect probably were involved with witchcraft in one way or another; I was once told my name and birthmonth by a stranger who was selling stones I had been looking at, and was freaked out by that for years, still kinda am). I feel so drawn to it and really want to revisit it and learn more but have always felt so… helpless and overwhelmed on where to start or how to properly do so, and your articles are helping so so much. Thank you 😀
I’ve been practicing since I was a small child. Unfortunately I came across a bad part in my life that lead me away from my craft. It’s coming back slowly and I found your page yesterday. It’s just so affirming as I flip through each article that I know It never left me and I am who I am and it’s okay. Thanks for being you and sharing.
One thing i’ll share too in this community is that I’ve seen some toxic gatekeeping. I remember my first experience starting out, I was almost discouraged. I was told that this particular person was from a witches line and that’s what you needed to be in order to practice. That isn’t the case. Don’t let anyone tell you that. I always equate it to being a musician. There are some people who can Just start playing piano. They’re a natural, but someone who practices every day can become just as good if not better. Being a ‘natural ‘l can make you arrogant. also, I’ve found the more you know, the less you know. I’ve been practicing since i was 12…. i sTILL feel out of place at time
I have been reading pagan books since before I was a teenager and I still feel like a beginner in my mid 20’s. The thing that causes me to spiral the most is that there is no vault for all things witch craft and a lot of what happens I wonder if I am just making it up in my head and I tend to doubt myself a lot.
Im finally setting my spiritual beliefs, and im deciding how i view the world as a child who grew up atheist. I think witch craft is close to how i believe, in which it uses the energy from the earth that we use to aid us in everyday life. Very happy that ive came to this conclusion 😀 everyone have a lovely day
Thank you sooo much, I really needed to hear this, as I have often felt like this! I have been learning since almost 2 years but had some longer “breaks” inbetween. I always felt bad about this and I always felt like I am so behind with everything, so thank you so much for saying this, i really needed to hear it! ♡
This is such a good topic and a lovely article. How on earth do you keep maidenhair fern alive? I have such trouble with it…but I haven’t given up. Also seeing your footage of the PNW is making my soul ache with nostalgia. I lived in the North Tacoma/Seattle area for 2 years and really miss the hikes through Mt. Rainier and the Olympics. I really need to make an effort to get back up there (I’m in Texas).
I’m a natural witch….truly! Once I was making french fries 🍟 for my children and I realized that the frying sound was exactly like people clapping! I began a chorus of Jupiter orbiting trine the Sun 😎 bring me money 💰 on the run. I repeated this over and over and over again until I saw red and blue lights flashing on my dining room wall! I went into the living room and found police sirens and officers handcuffing a man on my front lawn! There was money all over my lawn! I’m a natural witch although need a little focus I guess! LoL 😆
A spell begins in the preparation of the spell; identifying what you want for a stronger intention. Cleansing the area and your tools and yourself. Then the actual spell itself. But it is not end there, that is not the actual complete spell for it to manifest you must continue to think about it, even on your daily chores driving around doing errands that intention has to be in your mind
im lost im not a beginner but i have many questions. ive always been told that the real work comes after your third. more lessons and i like that. im learning how to practice from my bed or my wheelchair all while keeping quiet in this fundamentist christian adult home. for even me thats too much bitching i thank the Lady for this computer and headphones. dont worry i am still learning. :goodvibes: blessed be
I’m 63 years old and at last its nice to see a young woman talking sense. Most of the so called young witches haven’t got a clue what its about ( no offence to anyone ) and it just seems they are playing at it but hopefully them what are seriously wanting to learn will succeed . I would class myself as a solitary pagan . I try to help people by being very subtle but telling them what i’v made for them without them even asking. So far everyone has been thankful and not thought i’m just a crazy woman 😉. Good luck in your walk of life. Blessed be young Maiden )0(. Love to all xhugx.
For me exploring the Norse Pagan path. I always looked at signs, how they connect to myth and lore, then self reflected upon practice. Honestly when it comes to tools and artifacts? When it comes to Odin? Walking the Wandier’s path is a frying pan to the face literally okay, metaphysically literally. I was looking into a staff and well didn’t have the right length for an ash wood log. Then looked at White Oak. Okay need heavy tools to make one out of 18″ diameter log. So went to the Nature Market, aka? Duh bush! Actually a park, but it was in that wandering it felt like being goaded, pushed, yet encouraged. When I found what called to me? A dead cracked, weathered 2″ diameter hickory wood? I questioned myself, but after walking with it. It felt like that half of me reconnected. So my point? Not tools in magic are just “tools” each is an extension, and I’m still learning but…this staff is me and I am it. Its going to get a lot of love. Hickory is said to reflect strength and flexibility. Oh yes I plain to focus on that deeply. 👍👍👍
Everyone must find their own way. Their are good universal principals to follow and live by. Do no harm to yourself and others. You can not break universal law with impunity. Do the next right thing, and you will be reasonably happy. Use the short amount of time you have been allotted on this earth wisely. Try not to judge others and develop patience and tolerance. Speak truth and take responsibility. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Try to “smell the roses”along the way. Respect yourself, but try not to take yourself too seriously
I’m 25 and always had visions but I couldn’t share it because I was raised in a very religious family and this stuff was frowned upon. But now that I’m my own person living my own life I feel like I unlocked myself and feel welcomed and whole. Even though others might look down on me I’ve never been happier
“Most of the time in our daily lives we’re doing spell work without even realizing it. It’s the intention that we put behind it that really does all the power. And think about how many times you’ve put intention into things, all those coincidences in life and those moments that you hoped for so desperately and they came to be. That’s spell work at its finest.” 🙂
Although people often say, “One witch’s way might not work for another witch, your path is unique,” and so on, there’s another way to look at this. Your methods should be showing results. Witchcraft is also a communal act, although solitary work is much easier, because finding a harmonious coven is soooo difficult, because, by circular reasoning here, if each withch is expecting that their way is unique, then how will that group of women ever combine their practice into a greater result for the benefit of all? Witchcraft is a science, an empirical science, but if what you do does not:have results–does not increase your dreaming, heal yourself and others, transform relationships, help out with material needs and reduce material needs, and so on–then why are you practicing? You need to be getting feedback from the Nature around you and from the World in order to know if you are on the right path
