Cake decorating with a spray can is a really easy way to give your cake its own look, so long as you know what you’re doing.

What do I do if I forgot to spray the pan?

One expedient method for demolding the cake is to place the cake pan on a pan of boiling water and allow it to sit for two minutes. After this period, the cake pan should be flipped over.

How do you keep a cake fresh after decorating?

To freeze a cake, chill it uncovered for 15 minutes to harden the icing, then wrap it loosely in plastic wrap. Store it in a cake keeper or fridge for up to a week. If you need to keep unfrosted layers or a frosted cake for more than a few days, use your freezer for up to three months. Unfrosted layers should be double-wrapped in plastic wrap and placed in a freezer-safe bag or aluminum foil.

Is it OK to decorate a cake the day before?

Cake decorations can be done 2 days in advance, but it’s best to do so close to the day of serving. The cake can also be stored in the fridge, especially if the icing or frosting contains perishable ingredients. Covering a sponge cake in icing can preserve it for 4-5 days if stored well. Buttercream icing can be made ahead of time, but it should be made 1 – 2 days before serving to ensure freshness.

The icing can be left in an air-tight container in the fridge until needed. On the day of serving, remove the icing from the fridge and allow it to sit at room temperature for around an hour before decorating.

What happens if you don’t spray the cake pan?

Non-greasing your cake pan before baking can lead to issues, such as the cake adhering to glass or metal instead of having a thin layer of fat or oil. This can cause the cake to struggle to remove from the pan, causing crumb tearing or falling to pieces. To fix this, try gluing the torn pieces together with frosting, but this requires removing the torn pieces without further tearing them and reassembling them. To ensure a respectable-looking bake, butter everything up before pouring the batter.

If you don’t have time to bake a new dessert, try filling a larger pan with hot water and placing the cake pan inside, ensuring the water doesn’t come in direct contact with the sponge. Allow the twist on the bain-marie to rest for three minutes before attempting to remove the cake from the pan again.

Should I cover cake after baking?

To keep a cake moist after baking, wrap it as soon as it cools and keep unfrosted parts from touching the air. If the cake is over baked, defrost the layers before decorating them. Once the frosting is ready, let them soften before trimming and decorating. A frozen cake is easier to stack and carve. Return the cake to the refrigerator to firm up the buttercream, and by the time the cake is finished, it is very “thawed”. This is especially important for cakes made with real butter, as it becomes firm when cold and soft when returned to room temperature. This ensures the cake remains moist and easy to stack and carve.

  • I loved the contrast between Laurie, who’s having the time of her life decorating the cake and then Kevin, who’s NOT having the time of his life while cleaning the mess after the spray paint in completely black and white. I really didn’t expect the Bilie Eilish. :’D Stunning cake Laurie and a fun article all in all, thank you! ^^

  • This is my favorite of your articles so far, you and Kevin are so cute, the part where he goes “Oh yeah. No? Oh yeah. No?” Is something I quote at my husband now. You turning suddenly to look into the camera as he talks about getting a close up of your face, and of course the sad cleaning juxtaposed with you happily decorating the cake. It’s all so fun! I’ve watched it several times. Please keep it up!

  • Love everthing about your website and dont even know the other cake decorators you mentioned. Just love you and your hubs colab AND Archie!!! There is a quote from Pretty Woman movie that Julia Roberts said that is soooo true! Vivian: “People put you down enough, you start to believe it….The bad stuff is easier to believe. You ever notice that?” DON’T LET IT!!!!

  • Omg….Kevin…the spray is everywhere 😂. The cleanup!!! The Kevin look…😂 But the cake does look elegant…Worth it Kevin…right 😂 When I use my airbrush, or coloured canister spray I use a huge cloth backdrop and a big box with my cake inside. And a drop cloth on the floor. Cause that spray, it be going everywhere!!

  • This so cool, I never watched this article so fast. Could you possibly do more of these articles, I’m curious to see what spray paint would look like on modeling chocolate or on that origami cake that you made before. I think it would be cool to see you use it on a 3D cake. Any who, love you. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

  • So I understand about putting craft flowers on a cake, but have you ever thought about where those flowers have been? Whether they fall on the floor everybody touching them other peoples touching hands I just wonder how do you sanitize those flowers? I know we don’t eat them, but they are touching the icing, by the way, I love your articles I just always had that on my mind

  • Maybe purchase an inexpensive vinyl tablecloth. They usually have a flannel back so they won’t slip. You could hang a clear heavyweight vinyl shower curtain from the ceiling to help contain the overspray. Since it’s clear Kevin can still film. Shower curtains are sometimes machine washable. You can take them outside to hose them off or maybe put them in your shower.

  • Years ago, I made cake pops that looked like jingle bells-the silver ones with the X. I used a silver spray on the them. My husband said he cleaned up sliver for a long time. When your husband suggest a backdrop, I thought to myself it is not going to be enough! Oh! I also LOVE Love and Pies! So glad they sponsored you!

  • I went to your website to buy the smoothing tool, but nothing happens when I try to add it to cart or buy now. Have tried two different browsers on my phone. Is there a bug issue, is it sold out, or is it just not working because I’m in Sweden? I don’t think it’s because of my phone, but maybe I should try on my computer?

  • I absolutely love you Laurie and Kevin, Archie, this website, etc. I watch every article faithfully. But i am Canadian and cant pay USD for your products and I am sure the smoother is super high quality like your articles. You’re Canadian too so I just feel like i am getting charged an extra 30% more, sadly.

  • By the way I HATE THAT MOP! Everyone says it’s so amazing. My husband doesn’t mop. In the 23 years we have been together he has probably mopped something about 5 times. Anyway, he goes out and buys this $60 mop. My Mom lives with us, she can’t pick up heavy things so this is a no go for her and I just use the sink to mop. He says he will mop all of the time. Guess how many times he has mopped? Like 2 in about 2 years. 😂😂😂😂😂 He now uses the mop at his gym. So atleast he has that.

  • Kevin, you probably already know this… But you will be finding remnants of that spray forever. In May I used it to spray paint gumballs a color I couldn’t find them in and I needed (don’t even ask, I’m just generally a goofball in the kitchen) and I will still go wipe my backsplash or maybe an item I didn’t realize was out during the project and all of a sudden I’m smearing hot pink everywhere… Mine was even a little tiny can lol…. Never again

  • 11:15 perusal Laurie mock and then completely disregard Kevin’s feelings about the inevitable mess was PAINFUL. What bothers me the most is that if the gender rolls were reversed here, and a man was acting this way towards his wife, it wouldn’t be “cute” because he was so “excited” it would be malicious and people would be up in arms over the disrespect. I don’t get why the behavior is unproblematic/acceptable simply because it’s being done by a woman. This isn’t the first time I’ve noticed this type of behavior on this website. But I’m 11:15 into the vid and I’m not sticking around to see any more of the article. Unlikely to return based on some of the comments left by people who finished the vid.

  • Bakery…. getting up at 5 in the morning… Haha… Hahahaha…. Thats precious. lol My uncle had to have some of his Staff or even just himself, be there at 3am or 4am to start preparing everything before the actual opening serving hours. He also was the provider for many other shops, diners, cafes and their such stores. The donuts they would have would be my uncles so lots of early baking so those could be delivered super early that morning so those businesses could serve those donuts to the people THEY served on their ways to work in the morning. Not all bakeries are the same but I have an Extremely hard time imagining any actual bakery getting up at 5am, getting to work at 6, preparing the kitchen supplies and baking baked goods for 7 and/or 8 and so on. Oh look, everyones already at work. lol Missed the morning rush window.

  • I was thinking you should have used cardboard around 3 sides of the cake to spray and contain the mess. You know, like those dividers you would put on your desk at school during big tests, making your desk like a little cubicle. Anywho maybe get a decent size box and cleaning remove one side, tape the bottom together and go to town. The cake looks amazing, that spray is way too expensive though.

  • The bakery I work at has a spray gun. It’s mostly used on entre-mets that are frozen. So when the hot cocoabutter hits the frozen surface, you automatically get the velvet effect. I’ll be honest, it’s not great for my asthma 😅 we also use our spraygun to paint our chocolate molds and chocolate figurines!

  • I would love to see a fall color scheme wedding cake that utilized the new buttercream molding technique. Please no pumpkins. Burgundy, Oranges cashmere and copper. With an off the wall flavor like pumpkin spice or banana foster. Yummy. Any who, love ur articles & can’t wait to try the spray! You both are so wonderfully entertaining to watch.❤

  • This article is the exact representation of the fact there can be thousands of cake decorators online but it’s the personality in the content that matters ❤❤❤ found your website few days ago and I’m binging the articles 😍 I’ve been perusal Rosanna, Ann from How to cook that, How to take it, and I finally found another gem on baking YouTube 💎

  • Not cake but: I have a huge bag of organic wild grown cocoa butter. One time, I made delicious brown butter pecan chocolate chip cookies, and then I painted/glazed them in melted cocoa butter. It was so tasty, and they took on a unique texture. I recommend it, even if just for fun!🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻💋💋💋🇺🇸🌸
