I prefer to brush blast with a sandblast pot and black beauty if theres a lot of rust, if theres only some rusty spots you need to wire brush and sandpaper them VERY GOOD try your best to get to shiny metal underneath. ( even tho you wont completely) prep is 80% of the job, dont rush it. a drill with wire brush wheel works good too. then dust off or blow off all the rust dust and power wash with soapy water, if there are brand new areas of sheet metal wipe them off with MEK and a rag to remove any factory oil film before power washing. replace any screws or put in more where you see the metal flexing using screws with rubber gaskets attached under the head you can buy them by the bag. then spray on a coat of iron oxide oil based primer, after its dry completely, spray it with hi gloss white oil enamel and then hit it with a second coat when the first is completely dry. after 8 years power wash it good, let it dry and spray one more good coat of white hi gloss oil enamel to get 15 more years out of it. edit-(40 years local 8 steel painters and allied trades, retired)
