Home Improvement, a popular ABC sitcom from the mid-1990s, featured a mysterious character named Wilson whose face remained hidden. The show’s running gag was that Wilson’s face was obscured by a fence or other objects. However, the show’s finale curtain call, “Backstage Pass”, finally revealed Wilson’s face. This was a clever way to add excitement to the show.
For eight seasons, Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor relied on his neighbor Wilson for sage advice. Wilson’s face was accidentally revealed at the end of season 6 episode The Karate Kid Returns when the Beach Boys made a cameo as Wilson’s cousins and Ji. Earl Hindman’s face was fully shown following the series finale episode while taking his final bow, though he did come out holding a miniature fence on a stick.
Home Improvement’s legacy lives on decades later, thanks to memorable grunting from series lead Tim Allen and the inclusion of the popular characters. It wasn’t until Home Improvement’s official finale, “Backstage Pass”, that viewers finally got to see Wilson’s face, or at least Earl Hindman’s. “Backstage Pass” is a TV special that looks back on Home Improvement, including interviews with the cast and bloopers.
A recurring gag on Home Improvement is that Wilson’s face is never shown fully, but the real reason behind Wilson’s hiding is that he didn’t wear sunglasses all the time. Hindman even hid his face for a final episode interview, though old footage from the filming of the Home Improvement finale shows him hiding his face.
