What to do with the space between kitchen cabinets and the ceiling?

The gap between cabinets and the ceiling in a kitchen can be filled by various methods, such as adding a plant, arranging collections, displaying vintage items, extending the wall over the cabinets, adding decorative lighting, displaying cookbooks or kitchen-themed décor, and installing crown molding. This space is not necessarily bad or bad, but it serves no purpose and can be enhanced by adding design and decor elements.

There is no right or wrong answer to cabinet heights, as personal preference is what matters. It’s not necessary for cabinets to touch the ceiling, but it’s a personal preference. Some people prefer a smooth, continuous appearance, while others prefer cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling. Crown molding can also be a great way to enhance the space between the cabinets and the ceiling.

To choose the best filler material for your cabinets, consider factors such as the material, size, and placement of gaps. Silicone caulk is ideal for smaller spaces and sealing wood or metal cabinetry, while wood filler can be sanded and painted to blend with the existing finish. Expanding foam is a versatile option for bigger gaps, cut and painted to match cabinetry and walls. For narrow gaps, consider caulking, which can be matched to the countertop or colorless for a seamless finish. Protect the top edge of the cabinet with painter’s tape for a clean application. Expanding Foam Solution is a polyurethane-based sealant used to fill gaps and cracks, including those between cabinets and walls. It is easy to apply, affordable, and quickly expands to provide an effective seal. However, users should be cautious about overapplication and clean up excess foam before it cures.

To effectively use cabinet space in your kitchen, consider the following guidelines:

Upper cabinets should hold food, spices, glassware, and dishes, while lower cabinets should hold larger serving pieces, small kitchen appliances, pots, pans, mixing bowls, baking sheets, and cutting boards. Under the kitchen sink, an often forgotten storage space, can be reorganized using under-the-sink sliding shelves, hooks on door doors for small hand towels and cleaning cloths, small, clear storage containers, shelf liners to protect the bottom of cabinets from spills or leaks, and a lazy susan underneath a large garbage disposal for easy maneuvering. • Hey Mark, great article, as always! About those wire baskets that you are not crazy about: I think the concept is a good one, for keeping some vegetables that need to allow air to circulate around them to prevent nastiness developing, it’s just the execution here that doesn’t live up to the usual IKEA standards. Maybe that will step it up in the next iteration.

  • Hi Mark. We finished our IKEA kitchen late 2021 and I used those corner cabinet solutions. I also used drawers/hidden drawers for most of the base cabinets. This kitchen is the best! And I have you to thank! Your previous reviews of IKEA’s products really helped in the decision to use IKEA. Good work!

  • Shallow pantry are it for me. Mamam (my grandma), had single shelf storage and I LOVED it. So easy. Right now I have these metal wire racks but once it’s warm enough, I’ll build my own shallow shelves and then Annie Sloan Chalk Paint them fun colours. For the Lazy Susan, that half-way one, I like the railing. That’s useful. But like you, I’m not a fan of that corner space either. Lots to still do on my kitchen like the lowers under the sink. I like those long draw pulls and I love the drawers that come out. Excellent stuff. Not sure if I’ll be home during your live stream today but if I am, I will be there for sure. If not, I’ll catch the replay as I’m working on the kitchen. Cheers, Ivy.

  • Ikea has shallow drawers so you can still have drawers under the sink with through-the-floor plumbing as long as you have the drain at the back of the sink. What I did in my kitchen. I really don’t like the “attached face” pullout – they always seems super rickety and like they are going to break, so I did a 15″ and 10″ shallow drawers, then the fixed 5″ with a fake handle to match the rest of the lowers.

  • You didn’t mention the brand new Uppdatera series! This has me very excited, especially the pegboard drawer organizer. Much more flexible that the fixed drawer dividers! They also added some more utensil/silverware options for 15″ deep drawers, which is great for people like us, who have 15″ deep cabinets on the back of a peninsula.

  • Necessity the mother of invention…..most of my organization came from me needing a solution….so think people…lol…yes IKEA is great…I look for every day things and repurpose them yet with flair…makes you scratch your head and say….why didn’t I think of that😜…..don’t want it to look odd or stick out like a soar thumb yet makes you have that nostalgic feeling on the inside remembering that lil something that brings back a good memory ….now I don’t dumpster dive…hey if you do go for it…but maybe find something in the garden house, barn, or maw-♥️maws homestead and repurpose with theses thoughts…is it aesthetically appealing, is it useful, and how do I display with purpose…that’s just me. Not every one is the same…but you would be surprised at the things that are useful…keep up the good work and yes…TOP OF MY LIST ORGANIZING….and the rest will fall into place👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Blessings & Great Success to the whole Tobin Crew👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  • One of the “corner solutions” I’ve yet to see but that would make some sense would be to use the standard 24″ square space (plus maybe more) in a corner to fit in a shaft-like and potentially two-level “appliance garage” that (hydraulically?) rose from below the counter to let you use (or take out) what you need and then just send it back below and out of sight. To hide the resulting seam you could top it with a movable cutting board or basket to enhance the functionality of the corner counter. Kind-of like a 21st century “dumb waiter”…

  • You know i love kitchen corner solutions. I have a fantastic lazy susan unit. But i also have Ikeas lazy susan unit and it is not nearly as good imo. The moving part is easy to small for the box leaving a huge gap that stuff can fall into. I did decide to use mine for oversized storage and cooking items less likely to fall off. Thx for the article:-)
