This video teaches how to use a jeweler’s saw, a crucial skill for creating intricate, custom metal shapes for jewelry making. The video covers the use of a saw frame, blades, proper sawing etiquette, and breaking less saw blades. A jeweler’s saw is essential for creating intricate shapes and pierce holes inside sheet metal. To create one-of-a-kind pieces, one can cut metal wire and sheet with a jeweller’s piercing saw, a versatile tool for jewelry making.
To use a jeweler’s saw, place the metal over the ‘V’ of a wooden bench pin, keeping it firmly pressed down. Hold the saw frame lightly with pliers, and rotate the metal to follow the pattern. A loose grip is essential when sawing, as it can be easy to put too much pressure on the saw.
To master the jeweler’s saw, place the metal over the ‘V’ of a wooden bench pin, holding it firmly pressed down. Hold the saw frame lightly with pliers, and twist the blade 90 degrees so that the saw frame is perpendicular to the axis of the saw cut. This will help you cut like a pro and avoid braking as many blades.
In summary, using a jeweler’s saw is essential for creating intricate, custom metal shapes for jewelry making, but it can be intimidating due to its knobs and fragile blades. Mastering this skill can lead to beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces without the need for lost wax casting, bezel setting, or soldering.

Beautiful work! You have stellar piercing skills! Can you please tell me what kind of labels you use for your printer? They seem to stay put while sawing and come off easily when you want to remove them. I just got my printer to finally work and I want to print some patterns. Also, do you have a favorite program or website that you use for templates? Thank you for another great article! Your bracelet/ring is gorgeous!
Oh, c’mon, Randy! Excuses, excuses! Hahahaha! Kidding. You have wicked saw skills. I am so much less patient in my old age that I wouldn’t even try that. Too tedious for me. Imagine a Tom & Jerry cartoon where Tom is scream faced with his tongue sticking out. That’s me trying to cut your disk out. 😉 Ahhhhh! That’s a 5-blade piece for me. Grrrrr. I still haven’t cut out the letters for my Christmas ornament. Well, I got 2 cut out. LAAAAYZEEEE!!!
Hi Randy….once again, amazing work. I am a fairly new jeweler and having much difficulty using my saw. I have broken about 9 blades now. Trying to saw a 24 gauge copper with a 0/6 blade. I hace lubricated the blade, made sure the teeth point downward, held it at 90 degrees. What am I doing wrong? It makes a cut while going down but then I am unable to bring it up smoothly. Any tip would be appreciated. Thank you.
Informative articles like this are great exposure to the minutiae of unknown skills. Metalwork has been one of those 3rd on my list of additional hobbies things for a while, but I know little enough about it that if asked how to make holes like that, I would have made up some crazy thing that would not have worked nearly as well! Thanks for teaching me something new.
