The lock comes with a tool for removing the levers, a “pin wrench” made of a heavy piece of wire with a loop at one end. The tool is inserted in a small hole in the stem of the lever and pressure applied, depressing a spring retainer that allows the lever to be pulled from the stem and removed. To remove the retaining ring, rotate it anticlockwise. A specialized castle nut wrench is made for installing/removing these locks.
To replace a Schlage door handle, insert the key in the handle on the outside of the door and turn it 90 degrees so it’s oriented vertically in the reset position. Insert the pin tool into the handle and push the pin inside. Twist the lever counterclockwise to loosen the nut.
Extract the top and bottom screws out of the handle escutcheon using a power drill in reverse. Stick a pin into the ridge of the castle nut and gently tap the end of the screw driver to loosen the nut. There should be a slot in the narrow part of one of the handles with a spring-loaded keeper. Push this in and pull out on the knob at the same time.
A small flat-blade screwdriver can be used to remove the spring-loaded keeper without the tool. Press in on the piece under the opening while pulling the lever away from the door. Turn the set screw into the mechanism which then releases the lever, allowing you to pull it off. Press in the small retainer disc on the throat and pull the lever off while holding the retainer in. Sometimes, you may need to tighten the rosette by hand.

Very nice article! When my lock set was installed, the levers were reversed from the desired position. We could not figure out how to remove the lever on the key hole side; the lever on the inside came off easily. This article helped us to understand that you need a key to remove the outside lever. Makes sense. I have to ask; why is this not mentioned in the paper instructions that come with the lock set?
